The pin tumbler cylinder has done more to make security available to everyone who desires it than any other development in the locksmith’s art. Its mechanism is superior to any other ingeneral use in the protection it affords, and its form permits its adaptation for all the types of lockswith whichkeys are used. There are few key rings upon which keys to cylinder locks are not found. Figure 1 shows the face of a Corbin cylinder used with mortise door locks. The cylinder is embedded in the door, the face only being visible, and the key-hole forming the only point of attack. The key-way is of an irregular contour, the projections extending to the center of the slot. The plug which contains the key-way is cut from a solid bar, the irregular contour extending through its entire length, requiring a key th at will fit with exact ness. The interlocking of the key with the channel cut in the plug prevents any tilting or up-and-down motion of the key. The highest degree of ac curacy in form and fit is necessary, and nothing but a Corbin key can be made to operate a Corbin cylinder. Figure 2 is a sectional view of a cylinder used with Corbin rim night latches. This also is embedded in the door, the front alone being visible. The pins rest upon the balls in the bottom of the pockets, and firmly bolt the plug to the shells. To operate, a key must be used which will raise the pins to a point where the divisions coincide with the surface of the plug, permitting the key to rotate it. A very slight variation on any one of the five pins will prevent the key from turning the plug. It is easy to understand how such nicety will prevent the operation of the lock ex cept by the key to which it is made.

Figure 3 shows the same cyUnder with the key inserted, raising the pins and releasing the plug, per mitting the cylinder to operate the lock. Each one of the five pins can be made in several different lengths, so th a t it is easy to understand the large number of key-changes, each distinct and different from any other, th at can be provided. The balls eliminate friction and wear. The pin is balanced directly upon a ball, and when the key is inserted, the ball rolls in its place and imparts a directly upward movement to the pin. There is almost no resistance when a key is inserted or with drawn. The use of the balls is a Corbin invention and places the cylinders in a class by themselves. FIG. 3
T h e C orbin C ylinder M a ster-K ey System The use of master keys isbecoming general wherever there are many doors through which it is desired to limit passage to groups or individuals. In a hotel, for instance, each room will have a guest key which is different from all others in the building; each floor will have a different master key for its chamber maid; each wing or group of floors under a housekeeper will have a grand master key different from the others; and the office will have a great grand master key or emergency key which will open all doors. In a hospital there will be one dis tinct system for the medical portion; another for the service portion and an executive group different from either with grand master keys to pass all. Office buildings, factories, universities, railroad systems and large institu tions have carefully developed keying systems so arranged as to be capable of extension or changes. In one manufacturing city every large plant is equipped with the Corbin cylinder master-key system. The main division of one of the largest railroad systems is similarly equipped with Corbin master-keyed locks, with provision made for every new building along the line to automatically find its place in the plan as soon as erected. So general has the use of master keys become th at even residences of modest proportions are frequently keyed so th at the master’s key will unlock all doors, while the servants FIG. 4 carry keys which will admit them at the rear doors only. The Corbin master-keyed cylinder is the only one in which there is absolute certainty th at the nvimber of changes required will always be satisfactorily supplied. By the introduction of a master ring into the shell, the number of possible changes is doubled and the certainty of satisfactory combinations of service, master and grand master keys is assured. In figure 4, a Corbin master-keyed cylinder is shown. I t will be seen th at in addi tion to the usual series of divisions of the pins at the surface of the plug, there is another entirely separate and distinct series in effect at the surface of the enveloping master ring. In other words, there are two distinct locks using the same shell and key-way, but with entirely different changes. The master ring is a P. & F. Corbin in vention, and found only in Corbin cylinders. To show the possibilities of master keying in a large institution, there is appended a chart showing the arrange ment in a hospital group. This lay-out is typical of many others, each planned to suit the individual require ments of the installation. We shall be pleased to assist in the planning of master-key systems when desired.

SPECIAL KEYS
This chart explains the key combinations for locks supplied by us for a group of hospital buildings, and illus trates the accurate classification, the large number of segregated groups, and the ease of adaptation of our masterkeyed pin-tumbler cylinder lock for complicated installations. Even this intricate lay-out could have been ex tended without duplication or affecting the secTxrity. The regular Corbin master-keyed cylinder, with one key way for all keys, is used. The Service K e y s are indicated by the small circles. There are (1) single and (2) sets alike, but each single key or set is different from all others. The M aster K e y s indicated by larger circles give admission to each of the different groups of buildings and to no others. The Two Grand M aster K e y s enable the chiefs of the Medical and Business Corps to enter any door under their jurisdiction and no others. The Great Grand M aster K e y enables the head of the institution to enter any door a t will. A n y K e y in the entire system can be fitted as a service key to a desk, a wardrobe or a padlock. The service key to the janitors’ quarters can be made to pass the janitors’ closets in all buildings; the plumbers’ key can be fitted to the shut-off cabinets as well as their apartments; the housekeepers’ room key can be made the same as th at for the supply cupboard. The number of combinations is practically endless. The Special K e y s are not master keyed. They fit lockers, fire boxes, etc., where individual service alone is desired.
Corbin Unit Locks The Unit lock set is assembled at the factory in one piece, with knobs and escutcheons attached; it is shipped as a unit and is applied to the door as a unit. The fine and accurate adjustments of the skilled lockmakers are never disturbed. Unit locks are made in a large variety of functions to suit all purposes, with knobs and escutcheons in the Corbin designs and in any of the Corbin finishes. They cover all the requirements of high-grade door locks. The form and the fact th at the adjustments are undisturbed make it possible to introduce features which could not otherwise be adopted. The result is a superior tji)e of mechanism, a smoothness of action, a freedom from trouble and a degree of security which place the Corbin Unit locks in a separate and distinct class which has never been equaled. Among their distinguishing characteristics are the following: The M echanism is simple.
The accompanying illus IN T E R IO R O F A U N IT U OC K tration of a typical lock interior shows how few the parts are and their direct action. A frame, a latch bolt with tail piece, a spring, two roll-backs, a spindle and a cylinder in the outer knob,— these with the knobs and escutcheons make a No. 2467 lock for inside doors. Other types have additional parts to perform additional functions, but the same general form and simplicity is maintained in all. The Heavy Cast Bronze Frame holds all parts firmly
in place. The moving parts are all attached to the frame, instead of being laid into a case, and are accu rately machined to operate without loss of motion. m SW IN G IN G LATCH BO LT HEAVY CAST FRAM E The depth of the chamber in the frame permits all parts to be so arranged as to give a direct action with an easy spring and a positive smoothness which is found elsewhere only in high-grade safe locks. The Long, Sw inging Latch Bolt offers little frictional resistance to the strike, and protrudes far enough
to engage the strike in the event of the door shrinking. The Coiled S prin g gives a quick, snappy action with a slight turn to the knob. The Outer Knoh contains a Corbin ball-bearing cylinder — the highest development in key mechanism.

The U n it Lock is Adjustable for variations in thickness of doors. The Heavy Cast Bronze Escutcheons make the door stronger at this point than at any other.

The M ethod of Attaching is one of the most evident of the advantages obtained through the form of the Unit
lock. There is no mortise made in the door, but a piece is cut out of the edge of the door of the exact size of the lock case. This is accomplished in a very few minutes with an ordinary saw and chisel, and does not re quire especial skill. An ordinary workman can attach a Unit lock to the finest veneered door without danger of injuring the surface. After the cut is made, the lock set is slipped into place just as it comes from the box without detaching the knobs and escutcheons, or changing any of the adjustments. The adjusting screw is then tightened, bringing the escutcheons in close contact with the sides of the door, and the escutcheons are screwed to the door. The lock is always true and straight with the door and presents a finished appearance. The knobs are also in proper relation to the lock as the sleeves into which the knob shanks fit are a part of the heavy cast bronze frame, and project through the sides of the door, to the knobs, the shanks having but .004 of an inch of play. The Strike is a heavy bronze casting, with a lip or flange against which the inner edge of the lock rests.
The box or recess made to receive the latch bolt is accurately spaced and fits it snugly, holding the door closely against the stop. The strike is of the protected type, making it impossible to force back the latch bolt from the outside when the door is closed.

There are very few m oving parts — the latch bolt, the springs and the roll backs, operated on one side b y the k ey and on the other b y the knob. The case is a strong casting, and the l)olt is wide and heavy, with a long throw. T he tw o light, lively springs give a quick return. The pin tum bler cylinder provides ample security. I t is easy to attach, as the following illustrations demonstrate.
O utside. A hole is bored through the door, the size and location being given in the instructions packed in each box.
O utside. The only part visible is the face of the cylinder, the body of which is embedded in the door. The keyhole fon n s the only point of attack, and this is protected from picking bV its contour and the fine locking mechanism.
In s id e . The cylinder is slipped into the hole from the outside and fastened in place b y the two connecting screws, which pass through the plate provided.
In s id e . The night latch is placed over the back plate w ith the protruding spindle extending into the roll back. It is firmly attached b y long, strong screws.
