^ FO R EW O R D ^ H E N man first made his dwelling place a permanent home, hardware had its origin. In that dim day when violence stalked on every hand, man’s life often depended on his crude door and its fastenings. W ith the medieval feudal castles came a great development in the use and utility of hardware. Smiths who made the swords and armor for protection of men, also made hinges and hasps, drawbolts and rough locks on which the defense of the castle relied. In the middle ages, the smiths and metal workers formed trade guilds, and artistic craftsmanship and still higher standards of quality were brought to hardware making. They gave design and ornamentation to the crude hardware of the earlier smiths and armorers. Hardware was made to grace buildings as well as serve a purpose of utility. Craftsmen vied with each other in producing work in which beauty and artistry predominated. Hardware from the forges of these guildsmen is to be seen in many of the showplaces of Europe today, striking in its beauty, and still unimpaired by time or use. This heritage of skill in workmanship and design left us by the early smiths is reflected in the best hardware of the present day.

W h e r e O ld Id e a ls S till P re v a il T he ideals of the m edieval gu ild s­ men are cherished today by the makers of Earle H ardware. Earle products are executed by artisans w ho, unhurried in their work, do each thin g the best w a y it p o ssi­ bly can be done. N o one is e m ­ ployed on a piece-work basis in the Earle s h o p s ; nothing is done to conflict w ith the natural in cen ­ tive of a craftsman to put into his work the enduring elem ents of strength and grace. A n A r t a lw a y s M ost modern hom es and buildings receive their style tr u e to i t s JPeriod inspiration from the architecture of earlier periods, and hardware is a conspicuous elem ent in interpreting a building’s architectural style. If the expression is to be faithful, the quality, craftsmanship and design of the hardware m ust blend w ith or even accent all the other period features. H ardware by Earle that is based on the design of an earlier period is al­ w a ys a faithful reproduction of that design, modified only w hen neces­ sary for adaptation to modern use. W hether the structure is English, Italian, Spanish, Colonial or any other period, Earle hardware will authoritatively aid in expressing the motif. Its intrinsic beauty and craftsmanship lend to the structure a grace and dignity that is alw ays a source of pride and satisfaction.

T h e S a ti s f a c ti o n Fine hardware is an absolute n ecessity to hom es t h a t c o m e s w i t h th e of distinction. In building, the cost of finished C o n sc io u sn e ss hardware is but seldom more than five per cent of o f Q u a litv total cost. Little difference is made in the ^ final amount w hether superior or quite com m on­ place hardware has been used. But a vast difference is made in the effect achieved. Fem inine good taste in the choosing of the elem ents of the home, naturally inclines w om en to articles of true merit and beauty. T o a wom an, the grace and charm of Earle Hardware alw ays appeals. For her it has the individual touch w h ich makes further search unnecessary. In hardware in w hich quality and beauty predominate there is greater profit for e v e r y o n e : the hardware merchant, the builder and the owner. W ith the sale, purchase or use of anything of inherent quality, com es a sense of satis­ faction that is never derived from things that are common.

i n i s h hardware has been arranged in the catalog in the sequence in w hich it w ou ld be seen during the inspection of a building or hom e, beginning w ith Front D oor fittings and progressing through the vari­ ous hardware details for the interior. The arrangem ent groups together all articles of like description, D oor H andles being placed in one grouping, Levers in another, and so on, each grouping taking the space necessary to give an adequate display of the complete line.

W hile but one suffix is used for brass or bronze, w hen either of these finishes are ordered, they are supplied in solid brass or bronze. E xam ple of use: 777-1 would m ean a brass or bronze door handle m ade in design 777. 544-11 would m ean a w ro u g h t iron door handle m ade in design 544. 544-55 w ould m ean a w ro u g h t iron lever handle m ade in design 544. By m eans of this m an n er of n u m b e r­ ing w hen a design has been chosen the various item s o ' hardw are w anted in th a t design can be designated by sim ply adding the suffix for the article w anted to the design num ber. -10 is the suffix used for the E arle P a te n t P u sh B u tto n D oor H andle. T h is handle is not ordinarily m ade in w ro u g h t iron and for th a t reason has b u t the one suffix.

In ordering the number, size and finish of the article as show n in this catalog, together w ith any inform ation necessary as contained in footnotes on various pages, should be given. T h is w ill avoid errors and delay in filling orders. All orders will receive our prompt and careful attention and w ill be billed at the low est price ruling on the day order is received. T h is rule should work to mutual advantage. All orders are accepted contingent upon strikes or other causes of delay that are beyond our control.

Claims for corrections and deductions m ust be made w ithin five days after receipt of goods. Errors of any kind should be prom ptly reported that th ey m ay receive our imm ediate attention. Telephone orders are accepted subject to custom er’s liability for corrections and errors.

To enable dealers to make an appropriate display of hardware, the Earle M anufacturing Company can furnish D isplay Boards in the sizes and prices listed below. The cost of these boards is greatly in excess of the nominal charge made for them and dealers will find them to be excellent counter and w indow displays. T h ese boards can be had in any of the follow ing fin ish e s: W hite, Ivory, Spanish Grained, Natural Redwood, Scorched Pine, M ahogany and Oak. Board No. 1 m akes an attractive display for Knobs, Levers and Latches, and etc.

FINISH INFORMATION n y of our ornamental designs can be hand chased, EngHsh or French style, at an additional cost. Prices upon application.

Special F in is h e s ; Earle Hardware prices are based upon any standard finish suitable to the article. Polychrom e, Silver and Gold are special finishes and are charged for as f o ll o w s : Silver or P olychrom e or Antiquing, 25 per cent of the list price ad d ition al; Gold, 250 per cent of the list price additional. A ll of our plated finishes, except w h en otherw ise stated, bear a coating of lacquer. T h is coating of lacquer w ill be left off w h en so ordered. A n y W ro u g h t Iron H ardware can be duplicated in B rass or Bronze, if desired, at a discount of 25 per cent off net price. Bronze is som etim es desired in preference to Iron on account of its non-rusting qualities, especially in locations close to sea level or close to the ocean or large bodies of water. W e can duplicate Iron finishes on Brass or Bronze. F inish es on W ro u g h t Iron: O n W ro u g h t Iron m any people prefer the natural forge finish, and, w hile all Earle W ro u g h t Iron is given a coating of lacquer w hich leaves a slight gloss, this glo ss soon dulls to the natural forge finish that is preferred. Likew ise, m any people desire W rou gh t Iron H ardware to attain a natural rust finish and for this reason Earle W r o u g h t Iron H ardware is not rustproofed in manufacture. W h e n rust-proofing is desired, it w ill be supplied at no extra cost. This rust-proofing does not detract from the natural iron finish in any w a y and has no effect upon any other type of finish that m ay be desired.
