Bei den graphischen Methoden von d'Ocagne zur Auflösung von Gleichungen handelt es sich bekanntlich darum, eine Gleichung zwischen drei Variabein a,, a,, a3 als Resultante von drei Gleichungen darzustellen, deren jede zwei Coordinaten (Punkt- oder Liniencoordinaten) und je eine der drei Variabein als Parameter enthält. Die ersten beiden Arbeiten geben die Bedingung dafür, dass eine Gleichung von der Form ^ a, ß a ß 3 + 2 ? , ß2 a 3 + a 3 a, + ß 3 ß, ß 2 + C , ß, + C3 a 2 4 - C3 ß 3 + Z > == 0 durch drei lineare Systeme isoplether Punkte dargestellt werden kann. Die dritte Arbeit teilt die Bedingungen mit, unter denen diese Systeme durch eine lineare Transformation sich in „reguläre" (solche, bei welchen die gleichen Parameterdifferenzen entsprechenden Punkte auf der sie tragenden Geraden regulär angeordnet sind) verwandeln lassen. Die ausführliche Herleitung dieser Bedingung soll in einer künftigen Publication erfolgen. In der vierteil Arbeit wird gezeigt, dass die allgemeinste Gleichung zweiten Grades zwischen drei Veränderlichen sich dann und nur dann durch einen aus einem System von Kreisen und zwei Systemen von parallelen Geraden gebildeten Abakus darstellen lässt, wenn die Gleichung, in welcher man die Veränderlichen als cartesische Coordinaten auffasst, eine Fläche definirt, die durch wenigstens eine der Coordinatenebenen in einer Ellipse geschnitten wird. Es bedeute X irgend eine der unendlich vielen Lösungen der ganzen Zahlen xp x2, . . ., x„, die ein gewisses Problem zulässt; ferner seien ] ¿r,, . . . , n v 2 etc. arithmetische Functionen der x, die für alle hier in Betracht kommenden Werte der x je einen bestimmten ganzen positiven Wert annehmen. Zwei Systeme gehören derselben „Klasse" an, wenn etc.; die Klasse heisst dagegen „enthalten" in der Klasse wenn etc. und hier wenigstens einmal das Kleiner-Zeichen gilt. Dann sagt das genannte Princip aus, „dass die Anzahl der Klassen, die keine andere Klasse mehr enthalten, eine endliche ist". Der Beweis wird auf den einfacheren Fall zurückgeführt, wo die Functionen q>, Ijj, . . . mit den Variabein xt> x.2, . . . , x„ selbst übereinstimmen. Ein System X der x, das kein anderes mehr enthält, heisst ein „primäres". Dann ist also zu zeigen, dass die primären Systeme von (ganzen, positiven) Werten der x, die einem vorgelegten Probleme genügen, nur in endlicher Anzahl existiren. Der Nachweis gründet sich auf ein arithmetisches Anordnungsprincip, ähnlich einem von G o r d a n beim Beweise des H i l b e r t ' s e h e n Satzes (cf. F. d. M. 2 5 , 175, 1893) benutzten. Er nennt C r e m o n i a n a von U, V, W den Ort des Punktes, dessen erste Polaren in Bezug auf U, V, W einen gemeinschaftlichen Punkt haben. (Der Ort dieser gemeinschaftlichen Punkte ist die Jacobiana.) Die Cremoniana von U, V, W ist auch der Ort des Schnittpunktes der Polarlinien für die Punkte auf der Jacobiana. Die Eingehüllte aller Geraden, welche entsprechende Punkte auf der Jacobiana und Cremoniana verbinden, nennt der Verf. die Hyper-Cayleyana. Der Widerspruch löst sich dadurch, dass eine Schar von Bilinearformen immer eine Substitution in sich selbst zulässt, deren Coefficientcn mindesten n arbiträre Constanten enthalten. F ü r die ausgedehnten Untersuchungen K r o n e c k e r ' s über die Aequivalenz von bilinearen Formen aus den J a h r e n 1 8 7 4 und 1 8 9 0 1 8 9 1 (cf. F. d. M. 7 1 , 7 5 , 1 8 7 4 ; 22, 1G9, 1 8 9 0 ; 23, 1 2 8 , 1 8 9 1 ) giebt der Verf. durch eine einfache Ueberlegung Ersatz. notwendigen Bedingungen sind selbstredend anch für die engere Art von Aeqnivalenz erforderlich, aber sie reichen merkwürdiger Weise auch hin. Die Ueberlegongen des Verf. lassen den inneren Grund dieser Erscheinung hervortreten. Es seien zwei Substitutionen P, Q bekannt, die eine symmetrische (alternirende) Form A wieder in eine ebensolche B transformiren, so wird aus P und Q eine Substitution R abgeleitet, die, auf beide Reihen von Variabeln angewandt, A in B überführt, und von A und B unabhängig ist. Als Hülfsmittel dient ein Satz über Teilbarkeit ganzer Functionen, der durch Partialbruchzerlegung gewonnen wird; ist nämlich ip(x) eine ganze Function vom Grade m, so lässt sich eine ganze Function %(ai) vom Grade m—1 so bestimmen, dass j f ' C ® ) — x durch xp(x) teilbar wird. Ist nun i[>(U) = 0 die Gleichung niedrigsten Grades, der eine bilineare Form U (von nicht verschwindender Determinante) genügt, so wird x'(U) = U: eine derartige Function %(U) = t/i erfreut sich ausgezeichneter Eigenschaften. U~i lässt sich als ganze Function von U darstellen. In ähnlicher Weise lässt sich jede algebraische oder transcendente Function von U definiren, die sich in der Umgebung der Nullwerte von xp(x) regulär verhält. Bedeutet P' die zu P conjugirte Form, so bestimmt sich die oben erwähnte Form R durch die Gleichung: R = (P' Q; man hat dann R'AR = B. Daraus folgt der bekannte Hauptsatz, dass das Kriterium für die cogrediente Aequivalenz von A und B geliefert wird durch die Aequivalenz der Formenscharen uA-hvA' und uB+vB'. My. 6 . M. 1 0 , 79, 1878) zwei Scharen bilinearer Formen mit gleichen Elementarteilern auf rationalem Wege in einander (durch lineare Substitutionen) übergeführt. Das geschieht zunächst durch eine Substitution, deren Coefficienten noch ganze Functionen des Parameters der Schar sind: hinterher wird der Parameter durch eine gewisse Reduction entfernt. Der Verf. zeigt, dass der erste Schritt bei geeigneter Auffassung bereits den zweiten in sich enthält, wobei zugleich die Gesamtheit der überführenden Substitutionen auf rationalem Wege gewonnen wird.
