276 Yale Door Checks
A
D O O R C H E C K has been defined as “ A device intended to curb the per nicious activity of a door spring by compelHng it to behave decently.”
The
fault of a door spring prompted the invention of a door check. The only successful door checks are those of the liquid type: and of these the Blount is the earliest, the best and the most largely used. T he B lount Door Check, to use its p o p u la r n am e, is in fact a c om bined door s p r in g an d check, h aving the duel functions thus implied.
I t combines a pow erful coil sp ring (w hich fu rnishes th e motive power
to close the door) and a metallic piston moving in a metallic cylinder ag a in s t a non-freezing liquid (which furnishes the checking power to control the door). Provision is m ade w h ereb y each o f these two o pp osing pow ers can be reg u lated , th u s en a b lin g th em to be so adjusted relatively to each other, as to m eet any conditions o f use, an d to give a n y desired action to the door. T h e utility, convenience and reliability o f the B lo u n t D o o r C h e c k are so r e m a r k a b le a n d are so w^ell established, t h a t this device is now regarded as a necessity r a t h e r th a n a luxury, on m o s t outside or entran ce doors and on m a n y inside doors.
Its field o f usefulness is constantly in creasing a n d th e d e m a n d for it
is greater th a n ever before. The B lount Holder-Check is a recent im p r o v e m e n t of the B lo u n t C h e c k w hich consists in the a d d i tion o f a door holder, thus giving a third function.
T h i s consists o f a sim ple device w h ereb y , w h e n the door
is pushed wide open, it is securely held in t h a t position until released by a q u ic k m o v e m e n t o f th e hand . I h i s form is described on page 281 and thu s combines in one device a door spring, a door check and a door holder.
I t will be found serviceable for m a n y uses.
T he Y a le Double-acting Check is a device w hich does for d o u ble doors w h a t th e B lo u n t C h e c k has so long done for smgle doors: closes th e m quickly an d quietly. noise, danger and draughts.

I t is fully
described on pages 282 to 284A. T h e Y a l e Checking Floor H i n g e perform s all the functions o f a re g u la r B lo u n t C h ec k , b u t it is placed in the floor a t the time the door is placed in position.

361 Tri-plate Store Door Handles A recent and attractive variation from the combined escutcheon plate
I . M O S I since the introduction o f the “ C om . hined Store Door Lock and L a t c h ” it has been the custom to use therewith a trim consist ing, on each side, o f an elongated escutcheon plate carrying on its lower p a rt the handle or grip, and containing in its u p p er p a r t the keyhole or cylinder.
A
In place of this the th re e-p art trim illustrated on the following pages has recently come into vogue and is frequently preferred. 'I'his style of handle and trim can be used on any lock in which the latch bolt is arranged for operation by a thum b-piece. I t is m ost com m only used on the entran ce doors o f stores and public buildings, b u t is also frequently used on the entrance doors o f fine residences, especially those o f country houses and on mterior doors o f Colonial residences. O n the outside the trim consists o f three o r n a m ental plates, one su rro u n d in g the cylinder head, and the other two serving to s u p p o rt the h an d le or grip; on the inside the same trim m ay be repeated, or m ay be replaced by a com bined escutcheon plate carrying either a grip with thum b-piece or a knob. T h e illustration on this page shows the latter a rra n g e ment. A m ong the locks with which the tri-plate handles m ay be associated are: Pin-tum bler type No. 428 series (page 229) and Nos. 414J^, and
4723^
series (page 230).
L ever-tum bler type, No. 410 series (page 229).

I t is “ self-contained” in t h a t all of the parts are within the dim ensions given and require no other mortise. T h e ad ju stm e n ts of 15 degrees on each slot are positive. I t is practically indestructible and easily operated. W h e n this pivot is used on vertical sash, an adjuster is unnecessary as the sash is autom atically and firmly held in position.

Mortise w in d ow guard
The points of excellence of this sash fast have for years past commended themselves to architects and the trade at large. I t combines three important features: 1. It guards the window securely against opening. 2. It forces the sashes up and down against top and bottom of frame. 3. It draws the sashes firmly together.

Designs N presenting, on the following pages, the most extensive line of Ornamental Hardware in the world, we desire again to tender our sincere thanks to that large group of American architects whose sym pathy has been a constant encouragement to us in the developement of this field of Decorative Art, and to whose suggestions and support we are deeply indebted for much of whatever success we may have achieved: and also to those of our Trade customers who have had the wisdom to see the trend of popular taste in this direction and the courage to promote it by preaching the gospel of Artistic Hardware as a substitute for the crude and too often unsightly designs which formerly did service under the designation of “Ornamental Hardware.” Designs of the higher grades are arranged alphabetically by schools, as follow s;

C ut s third si/.o
Adam School h i s school was developed by the brothers Adam in London about 1750-1760. It ^ives evidence of 1 ‘rench (Louis XVI) and classic inHuence, and is distinj^uished by a conventional use of the classic bud and pearl, or bead, usetl in delicately outlining lar^e patterns such as ovals, circles and their smaller divisions, often emphasized at their junctions or elsew here by rosettes. 'Lhe resiiltant spandrels and panels are generally ornam ented with palms or other foliage and wreaths with ribbons. The style is marked by delicacy of pattern in outline and by careful modelling of the members.
