S T A M F O R D , CONN. T he Works of The Yale & T ow ne M anufacturing Company, which are illustrated in the above engraving, are located at Stamford, Connecticut, on the line of the New York,. New H aven & H artford Railroad, thirty-four miles from New York.

Thirty-eight

trains pass daily in each direction betw een the two points, the express trains m aking the run in fifty m in u t e s , so that a visit from New York and return can be accom plished in a few hours. T he n um erous buildings are constructed entirely of brick, and are exclusively devoted to the C o m p an y ’s business. located in the

T H E Y A L E & T O W N E M FG . CO.

At the annual meeting- of the corporation held April 19th, 1883, the stockholders voted to accept the authority given them by an Act of the Legislature of Connecticut to change the title of the corporation from “ T H E YALE LOCK MANUFACTURING COMPANY ” to the above name, b y which latter it has since been known. The change was one of nam e only and w as m ade necessary by the greatly enlarged scope of the C om pany’s business, in which the m anufacture of Locks, under the patents of Linus \ ale, Jr., and others, is now only one of several large departments. For reasons not necessary to enum erate it w as also found expedient to effect a sub ordinate organization, under the general laws of the State, bearing the old title of “ T H E YALE LOCK MANUFACTURING COMPANY,’' and also a similar organization entitled “ T H E WESTON CRANE COMPANY.” PANY ” had been organized in 1882.

In like m anner “ T H E EM ERY SCALE COM

The stock of all these subordinate Com panies is

ow ned and controlled by the parent Company, the title of which is now' “ T H E Y A L E & T O W N E M A N U F A C T U R I N G C O M P A N Y ; ” a nd although the several sub ordinate organizations will be perm anently maintained, for purposes relating to the o w n ership of patents and other franchises, the business of all will be conducted by “ T H E YALE & TOWNE MANUFACTURING COMPANY” in its own n am e a n d for its own account. It will thus be seen that the business of the Com pany embraces not only the m a n u facturing operations contem plated under its original organization, but also several im portant lines of heavy engineering work.

T he buildings, m achinery and appliances

for the latter are already provided and in full operation, and the change of n am e above announced is chiefly to avoid the misunderstanding, as to the C om pany’s business and facilities, which experience has shown to result from the old title

T H E Y A L E & T O W N E M F G . CO.

5

During the past seven years the C om pany has gradually built up a large business in H oisting Machinery, under the patents of Thos. A. Weston an d others, including Cranes of all kinds a n d of the largest sizes, and has recently also undertaken the m anufacture of the E m e ry T esting Machines.

T he production of work of this class involves the use

of large a n d h e a v y m achinery, a n d constitutes a branch of w ork entirely distinct from that included in the C o m p an y ’s Lock and H ardw are Departm ent.

Another departm ent

has been organized for the manufacture, under the patents of A. H. Em ery, of Scales of all kinds, an d of Pressure Gauges, the developm ent of which will in time, it is believed, m ake this departm ent of at least equal im portance with the older ones.

T h e y include the largest and m ost complete line of Fine

C r a n e C ompany,

including the Weston Differential

Pulley Blocks, Cranes and Hoists, are now so w idely and favorably know n that they are recognized as the standards in their respective classes.

T hey

are- m ore

fully

described in other a n d special catalogues. T h e products of T h e E m e r y S c a l e C o m pa n y are in active preparation, an d will be duly presented by special catalogues. T he E m ery Scales and other w eighing m achines are as yet little know n to the general public. T he great 400-t0n Testing M achine in the U. ,S. Arsenal at Watertown, Mass., was the first large em bodim ent of the num erous an d im portant inventions on which this line of work is based. Its extraordinary qualities for power, accuracy and extreme sensitiveness have m ade it world-famous am o n g engineers.

T he sam e elem ents w’hich enter into its construction

are em bodied in the Scales, Pressure Gauges and T esting Machines, which w e are now m aking and are rapidly placing on the market. It will thus be seen that our distinct specialty, in all of our various products, is high class work, and that in each of them we aim to produce better appliances than have heretofore existed, and that, for the accom plishm ent of this, we have provided the best and m ost perfect facilities attainable. Very respectfully,

“Y A L E ” D U P L E X Master Key Mortise Knob Locks. JTTIjY 30, 18V S.

Furnished in Sets of any desired number, from i to 10,000 controlled by one Master Key. This is the only M aster K ey Lock ever m ade in w hich the n um ber of changes controlled by one m aster key is not confined to a very limited num ber of locks, and in w hich the security of the lock is not im paired by the m aster key device. In other m aster key locks the tumblerw ork is com plicated and its adjustm ent easily disturbed by w ear ; the changes, if num erous, involve keys with very slight differences, so that the w ear resulting from use soon causes interchanging of keys ; the variations of the m aster key are usually small, so that locks of one series are apt to be passed by the keys of a n o th e r ; and, finally, the security against picking is very slight. In -the “ Y a l e ” D u p l e x M a s t e r K e y lock the “ e scu tc h e o n s” (containing the pins or tumblers) are of the regular pattern, and are subject to no unusual w e a r; each is capable of its f u l l number o f changes and no danger of ‘‘ interchanging ” results from use ; the possible variations of the m aster keys are as num erous as those of the change keys, so that the keys of each series m a y be entirely distinct from those of all other series ; and, finally, the locks have alw ays the m axim um security against picking. Referring to the diagram of face of lock on this page, and to the illustration on page lo i, the low er or latch bolt L is controlled in the usual w a y by a knob on each side of the door. T h e upper or dead bolt B is controlled by both the change key an d the master key from either one or both sides of the door. T h e lock is adapted to receive/ow r escutcheons, two on each side, the upper for the change key and the low er for t e m aster key. T hus arranged (class A) it is controlled by both keys from both sides. If it is only required that the m aster key shall control the lock from one side, the lower mside escutcheon is omitted ; thus arranged (class B) it has three escutcheons and is controlled b y both keys from the outside a n d b y only the change key on the inside. If only required for operation from the outside, it h a s b ut two escutcheons, both on the outside ; thus arranged, (class C) it is controlled b y both keys from one side only. For prices, see page

assurance has been m ade good on our part, and is appreciated b y the public, as evi denced by the constantly increasing .popularity of the goods. T he color print facing this page is an accurate representation of a “ S ta n d a r d ” Mortise Lock, show ing the construction and action o f the internal parts.

T h e front or

face-plate is of brass or bronze in all cases, and is fastened b y screw s to the lock case, which latter is of a n n e a le d iron.

T h e dead bolt is of bronze, and v ery strong.

The

tumblers are of mild steel, and engage with a steel fence (or stum p) inserted in the bolt.

T he key, also of steel, acts directly upon the bolt a n d tum blers, as shown.

latch bolt has a bronze head and w rought iron stem.

T he

The hub (for knob-spindle) is of

bronze and acts, by rolling contact, upon the iron tail piece.

Coiled brass springs are

alw ays used, as being the m ost durable and giving the best action.

A light spring is

used on the latch bolt, so that the latter yields easily on closing the door, and a heavier one on the tail piece.

B o th springs are com pressed w hen the knob is turned, thus giv

ing a quick, lively action to the knobs. A L L of the “ S ta n d a r d ” Mortise Locks are similar to the above in their details.

PADLOCKS. In design, construction and finish these are undoubtedly th e b e s t line o f Pad lock s ever made, and the rapidity with which they have ad v a n ce d to the leading position in the m arket is the best evidence of their popularity. T heir m ost prom inent points of novelty a n d excellence are : 1.

S O L I D I T Y , the m echanism being contained in a “ filling block,” which is

inserted into the exterior case from the bottom, so that w hen riveted together the lock is an alm ost solid block of bronze, instead of a thin, em pty shell, as in com m on locks. 2. S E C U R I T Y , as against v io le n c e , the greatest a padlock adm its of, partic ularly w hen provided with S T E E L S H A C K L E S ; and as against picking, the best possible with a first class tum bler lock, having four tu m b le r s deeply located within the lock case in the m ost inaccessible part, and controlled by a fiat steel key. 3. D U R A B I L I T Y , by reason of a solidity which protects the m echanism under alm ost any abuse or violence, and of the m ode of protection against dirt and moisture b y which these are both excluded from the interior of the lock. 4.

C O N V E N I E N C E in use, the locks having

( i.) A spring shackle, self-locking w hen closed by pressure, and self-op en in g w hen the key is turned. (2.) A double-bitted key, which m a y b e inserted in either position an d which unlocks by a h alf-revolution. (3.) An a u to m a tic stopper, for excluding dirt from the shackle-hole, and a key hole located at the b o tto m of th e lock, where it is m ost easily found w hen holding the lock in the hand, an d where it is perfectly protected from w et and dirt. 5. A P P E A R A N C E , which is not only entirely novel and distinctive, but w hich is more ornam ental in design and m ore h a n d so m e in finish than an y of the oldfashioned forms. T h e shape is determ ined by the internal construction, and hence is thoroughly m e c h a n ic a l. A BR O N ZE PADLOCK W IL L

The above cut represents a gate with fixtures complete. Arranged, as follows. T h e fastener (see cut below) is screw ed to the front stile of the gate, the lug, against w hich it stops, being attached to the gate post. T he top hinge is a wrought iron hook and eye, the hook screw ing into the post, so as to be easily adjusted in case of the gate sagging. T he low er hinge is so m ade that the gate is certain of closing from an y point.

Operated. D ow nw ard pressure on either of the two arm s or thumb-pieces, alw ays pressing forward, will open the gate. A d v a n ta g e s. M ore than 1700 “Y a le ” T i m e L o c k s h a v e b een sold and are n o w in use.

C O M B IN A T IO N B A N K 8z S A F E LOCKS. A m ong the m ost interesting and useful branches of the art of lock-making is the m an ufacture of Bank and Safe locks.

Since property existed lock-makers have endeavored

b y their art to render it secure, while the burglars, in their turn, have from time to time overcom e the locks and m ade fresh efforts and new inventions necessary. Both Linus Yale, Jr., the founder of this Company, and his father w ere famous m ak ers of Bank locks an d their reputation has been steadily maintained.

This C om pany

has alw ays been a n d is now the leading m anufacturer of Bank and Safe locks. D uring the past few years the use of Com bination locks on fire-proof safes has be com e so general that w e have devoted special attention to perfecting this line of goods. After m an y experim ents and m uch labor w e have produced a line of locks greatly improved, and of novel design, and have so perfected the m echanism as to leave nothing to be desired. In burglar-proof Bank locks we have introduced im provem ents of the greatest value, and these locks w e confidently recom m end as absolutely secure, and unpickable. A general statem ent of som e of our points of im provem ent is given below.

The

locks and their w orking parts are covered by broad patents recently issued, so that these im provem ents can be obtained from us alone. I M P R O V K D T U M B L E R . —T he m ost essential elem ent of a good Dial lock is a reliable com bination tumbler.

W ithout this no Dial lock can be satisfactory, how ever

perfect the other parts m ay be.

Our im proved tum bler is perfectly simple and is alw ays

reliable and satisfactory in its working. R O T A T I N G F K N C E B E A R I N G . —A fruitful source of trouble in all Com bina tion locks, as heretofore made, has been that the parts are liable to becom e stuck by dirt or corrosion or from som e other cause, so that even w hen the com bination is set the fence will not act and the lock cannot be unlocked, thereby causing a lock-out.

This is

especially liable to occur in wet-filled safes. One of our m ost im portant patented im provem ents is a device for absolutely pre venting the sticking of the working parts of the lock.

T he dog or tence is placed upon a

rotating bearing w hich is so connected with the dial spindle that w henever the dial is re volved the bearing of the fence will also revolve.

This not only prevents the accum u

lation of any dirt w hich m i^ht cause the fence to stick, but it also insures the operation of the lock under all circum stances, even if the parts should becom e dirty or corroded. S E C U R I T Y A G A I N S T P I C K I N G .—A nother advantage of this m ethod of con struction is that it perm its the use of a b a lan ced fence.

In this form of fence no pres

sure w hatever can be brought against the tumblers, w hich renders the picking of the lock impossible.

E ven our fire-proof safe locks thus constructed are unpickable.

L O C K I N G B A C K .—Another m an n e r in which Combination locks

have been

opened frequently by unauthorized persons is by rem oving the back of the lock w hen the door is opened and the ow ner absent, to find out by inspection of the tumblers w hat

338

THE

YALE & TO W N E

com bination the lock is set upon.

M F G . CO.

T h e back of the lock is then replaced in position,

and the person then having possession of the com bination can return at an y tim e and open the safe at his leisure.

We have tw o m ethods of preventing this ; one b y locking

the tumbler-curb fast b y m eans of a key lock ; b ut a still later an d better w a y is b y lock ing the back in position by m eans of the tum blers themselves.

T h a t is, w hen the back

is placed in position an d the tum blers revolved, it w ould be impossible to rem ove the back again until the tumblers are set up to their proper com bination on a m ark w hich is at a different point on the dial ring than the m ark on w hich the lock itself is opened.

By

this m eans there is the sam e security against stealing the com bination by rem oving the back that there is against stealing the contents of the safe, w hen the door is locked, and as the lock is unpickable, the lock cannot be unlocked nor the back removed. E A S E O F A P P L # I C A T I O N .—A nother feature of great value in our locks for fire proof safes especially to safe-makers, is the fact that they can be so easily a n d cheaply applied to the door, thereby saving considerable expense in labor. L O C K I N G D I A L . A nother novelty is the locking dial, that is, a key lock attached to the dial of a Com bination lock so that during the d ay tim e the bolt of the C om bination Lock m ay be shot forw ard a n d the dial locked, w hich will secure the safe against sneak-thieves, a n d render it easy for the ow ner to open it during the d ay w ithout setting up the combination. H e thus has at his option the use of a key or com bination lock, or both. S A F E D E P O S I T LOCKS.

For Safe Deposit Com panies w e m ake a special three

tum bler com bination lock w hich will interchange w ith a key lock, so that the com pany or the renter of a safe or box can readily ch an g e from the key lock to a com bination lock as his convenience m a y dictate.

Either the C om bination lock or the K ey lock

will fit the sam e cuts in the door, so that they can be used interchangeably with perfect ease. In this class of Com bination locks the use of the locking dial, above referred to, is especially desirable. We m ake C om bination locks of all varieties an d of all sizes a n d styles, both for burglar an d fire-proof safes. We assert w ith confidence that w e are m aking a larger an d better line of Com bination locks than have ever been before produced.

As will be

seen, w e possess radical im provem ents w hich are b roadly covered by recent patents a n d w hich render our locks m ore secure, m ore certain in operation, sim pler in construc tion, easier of application, an d m ore convenient in use than Dial locks have ever yet been made. • With a wide experience an d the best talent w e are constantly endeavoring to im prove this line of locks an d are frequently adding new styles an d im provem ents, in our efforts to m eet the w ants of our custom ers an d users of this class of goods. Prom pt attention will be given to an y inquiries concerning an y regular Combi nation locks, or a n y special w ork w hich m a y be required. We are m aking several line of Cabinet and other K ey locks specially adapted to safe m akers’ use.

P U L L E Y BLOCKS. In 1875 this Com pany acquired sole control of the patents covering the well-known W eston Differential Pulley Blocks, and have since been the sole m akers of them in the U nited States. Thos. A. Weston, Esq., M echanical Engineer, w hose invention of the Differential Pulley Block has practically added a new m echanical pow er to m an’s appliances and has m ade his n a m e familiar to engineers all over the world, has for m a n y years devoted him self to the study of H oisting M achinery as a specialty.

His

w ork has resulted in a series of im portant inventions and im provem ents in hoisting appliances of all kinds, from the sm aller Lifts, Crabs an d Winches, to the largest Derricks, Jib and Traveling Cranes. All of these inventions are now controlled by this Company, in w hose products they are embodied, together with the results of the com bined work of several other skilled inventors an d engineers, continued uninterruptedly during a n u m b er of years and aided by the resources of a large establishment, the whole directed to the develop m ent of Hoist and Crane building as a distinct specialty. A B S O L U T E S A F E T Y , both to the person and to the load, is the m ost im portant feature in all of these machines. In addition they possess simplicity, sm oothness of action, facility for change of speeds and other advantages (according to the use for which they are inte’nded) which render them the safest, m ost effective and m ost conven ient m achines of their respective kinds which have ever been made.

Differential Pulley Block. T h e portable hoisting device generally know n by the above n a m e w as invented som e tw e n ty ye a rs ago. It secured im m ediately great popularity, and its use extended rapidly throug hout the civilized world, w herever m odern m achinery w as known and appliances for lifting h e a v y w eights w ere needed. No previous device h a d ever em bodied the sa m e conveniences, nam ely, great lifting pow er and the ability to hold the load su sp en d e d at a n y point, a n d the accom plishm ent of these ends by a m achine of great sim plicity, com pactness, and of light weight. T he universal adoption, through out the world, of the W eston Differential Pulley Block as the standard type of portable hoists, is due to the fact that it per fectly m eets all of these require m ents an d in the sim plest possible way. Since its introduction other m achines have been invented for sim ilar uses, but no one of them com bines in itself the im portant characteristics of power,- safety, simplicity and portability to a de gree which equals that of the W es ton Block. T h e latter is dem onstra bly a reduction of the problem to its sim plest possible form, and there fore can never be superseded. In recent text books it is given ^ place am o n g the other m echanical p o w ers® or elem ents; thus recognizing the fundam ental character of its design and usefulness. T he principle of the Differential Pulley, although very simple, is not [.{ generally underst briefly described as follows : The upper block contains a doub le w E S T O N T A C K L E , OLD TAC K LE. sh e a v e , one groove of which is of less diam eter than the other, and the chain is so rove that of its two parts which carry the load one passes on to the large groove and the other on to the small groove, but from o p p o s ite s id es. It follows that w hen the sheave is rotated in one direction, the large sheave is w inding up the chain while the sm aller is lowering, but the large sheave takes in chain faster than the sm all sheave pays it out, a n d this difference causes the load to rise. R eversing the m otion causes lowering, in like m anner. U nder all cir cum stances, how ever, the load will rem ain suspended, and w ill n o t run d o w n . For a m ore com plete description of the W eston Pulley Block see “ T o w n e on C ra n e s,” pages i 68 to 174. F o r prices' see pages 3 6 2 and 3 6 3 of this catalogue. L
