W IN G K E Y — One having a w in g or projection fo r operating the bolt or tum blers of a lock.

The Yale Lock H E Y a le L ock takes its name from its inventor, Linus Y a le, Jr., w hose story is told elsewhere, w hereas most o f the im itations w hich have appeared since the e x piration o f the original Y a le patents have m odestly been named after one or other o f the older A m erican colleges. O f course none o f these im itations contain the later improvements embodied in the Y a le Lock, as these are still controlled by patents. T h e m ost vital element of the Y a le L ock is the “ cylinder” shown herew ith by Figs. I, 2, and 3. It consists of a shell or case enclosing a revo lvin g “ plug,” and containing a series of chambers to receive the “ pin-tum blers” w ith their com plem entary “ d rivers” and springs. E xten d ing longitudinally through the plug is the “ key-w ay,” and attached to its inner or rear end is the “ cam,” which, when the plug is rotated, engages with and operates the bolt o f the lock. E ach “ pin-cham ber” is form ed partly in the cylinder and partly in the plug, and each contains at its bottom a “ pin” (on which the key a cts), above this another pin, called the “ driver,” and above the lat ter a spring. N orm ally the several pins rest at the bottom o f their re spective pin-chambers, w hich latter intersect the key-w ay but do not e x tend quite to its low er limit. In this

T

Pig. 1 shows cylinder with key partly inserted, illustrating the action of the key upon the tumblers. Fig. 2 shows cylinder with key inserted whose hittings do not corre spond with the tumblers, and which, therefore, will not actuate the lock. Fig. 3 shows cylinder with proper key fully inserted, and the operation of cam at rear which actuates the lock mechanism.

Fig. 2

condition the plug is barred against rotation by the “ drivers,” each of which rests partly in the p lu g and p artly in the cylinder, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2. THE “ CYLIN D ER ” OF A YALE LOCK Illustrating the YALE Pin-Tumbler Mechanism

T ow n e Locks and H a r d w a r e

W hen a key is inserted its point passes under the pins, successively, and raises them so that they rest on top of the key. T h e insertion of the tru e k ey lifts each pin to a point such that the j.oint between it and its “ d river” corresponds ex a ctly w ith the joint between the plug and the cylinder. T h e plug is now free to rotate w ithin the cylinder (see F ig. 3, page 15 ), the pins travelin g w ith the plug and the drivers rem aining station ary in their respective chambers. I f any but the true key be inserted, how ever, (see Fig. 2, page 1 5 ), the pins w ill not be lifted to the proper points, and the plug w ill still be barred against rotation. A s the num ber o f the pin-tum blers is usu ally five, and as a variation of one-fiftietli of an inch from the proper height w ill cause any tumbler ef fectively to prevent rotation o f the plug, it w ill be seen that the Y a le Lock possesses a high order o f security and a vast capacity for key-changes or “ combinations.” T h e invention o f the rotating “ plug,” with its contained “pin-tumblers,” carried w ith it and m ade possible the em ploym ent o f a flat but rotative key.

In designing

this M r. Y a le adopted the trefoil form fo r the bow or handle o f the key, his original form o f key being shown by F ig. 4, and for m any years this peculiar design was used on ly w ith the Y a le L ock, and thus became generally identified w ith it, so that, in time, every lock w ith a flat key, especially if the bow o f the key had the trefoil shape, was popularly supposed to be a Y a le L ock, although a vast num ber o f cheap and insecure locks, not o f the “ cylinder” type, having keys of flat m etal and w ith trefoil-shaped bow s, w ere m ade and sold. couraged

U n fortunately, this error still persists, being often en

by unscrupulous dealers, and thousands o f bogus locks are palmed off

annually as genuine Y a le L ocks on custom ers w ho are too little informed, or too careless, to detect the fraud by n oting the absence from the goods of the name and trade-m ark o f the sole m akers o f the genuine Y a le Lock, T h e Y a le & Tow ne Manu factu rin g Com pany. A s the popularity o f the Y a le L ock grew and the demand for it increased, the e x perts o f the C om pany, finding that the origin al construction, although affording great capacity fo r key changes, perm itted the lock easily to be attacked by proper picking tools in the hands o f an expert, devised and adopted a radical improvement.

This

consisted in corru g atin g the blade o f the key (see Fig. 5 ), thereby m aking it stronger and far_ m ore difficult to duplicate, and in form ing the sides of the key-w ay with re verse corrugations, conform in g to and interlocking with, those of the key. Several very m arked advantages resulted from this im provem ent. It prevented the tilting of the key in the cylinder, w hich had been a fault w ith the flat k e y ; it g rea tly increased the resistance o f the lock to picking; / " — " it added further security bv m aking it far more difficult to Spindle Vie in. Dead Locks

A

D E A D Lock is one having a “ dead” bolt, that is, a bolt moving in either direction only by the key, as distinguished from a

N ig h t Latch in which the bolt is retracted by the key, but is moved into the locked position automatically by a spring.

Dead Locks should

be given preference for all uses where the best security is desired, and where the use of the lock is not very frequent. The follow ing section contains an assortment of Rim and Mortise Dead Locks most commonly used.

M ost of them are of the cylinder

type, for the reason that where a Dead Lock is used the best security is usually desired; but a few Dead Locks of the lever-tum bler type are also shown. R im Locks are apt to be preferred because easier of adjustment, but greater security against violence is afforded by a Mortise Lock of equal size.

As a R im Lock can be easily detached by means of a screw

driver, it affords no security from the inside of the door, whereas a Mortise Lock cannot be removed from either side when the door is closed.

Builders’ Hardware

' y ^ / ' H I L E this catalogue contains an assortment of Locks which em braces nearly all the types and kinds which are in most ac tive demand, its limits forbid an attempt to include an equally com prehensive selection of our general line of Builders’ Hardware, which is one of the most varied and extensive in the world.

The following

pages, however, present a few examples of plain hardware, covering some of the articles most commonly called for, or most likely to be needed in connection w ith the other goods contained herein. O u r complete line of Builders’ Hardware, both plain and orna mental, can only be fully presented by means of our general Trade Cat alogue, a large folio volume of over one thousand pages, designed for use chiefly by jobbers and other large distributors.

W e shall always

respond promptly, however, to requests for fuller information con cerning any of our numerous products, many of which are effectively shown by the special folders which we issue.

Keys and Blanks Repair W o r k J N addition to the facilities at our W orks, Stamford, Conn., and for the convenience of our trade customers, we maintain at our General Offices, New York, and at each of our Branch Offices, Boston, Phila delphia, and Chicago, a well equipped repair department, in charge of expert workmen.

From each of these we execute orders for repair

work of all kinds, for duplicate and extra keys, master-keyed locks, etc., and customers may consult their own convenience in sending such orders to any of these addresses, although, where conditions permit, it is better to address them to New York. Duplicate and extra keys can be made from any of our key blanks by the facilities available in any well equipped locksmith’s shop, hut such keys (especially for the Yale Lock) w ill usually be more accurate and their action in the lock better, if made by our special machine pro cess than if made by hand.

In the case of repairs to Yale Locks, Blount

D oo r Checks, and other specialties, the work will also usually be found more satisfactory if done by our experts than by other mechanics, who, however skillful, are less experienced in this particular line. Locksmiths and others who purchase blank keys should always give preference to those made by the makers of the locks with which they are to be used, as those furnished by other key-makers are never o f equal quality, and are liable to involve so m uch additional trouble

in fitting them to the locks as to more

than offset any

ordinary difference in price. For the convenience of locksmiths and others who make a spe cialty of repairing Yale Locks, we furnish key-hitting files, of special section, and also a complete “k it” of tools, for which prices will be quoted on application.

Cabinet and Trunk Locks Cabinet

L oc k s .

Locks for furniture and cabinet work, desig

nated generically as Cabinet Locks, are quite distinct from Builders’ Locks.

O ur line of Cabinet Locks embraces a vast variety of kinds,

sizes, and grades adapted for every use.

A few of those most largely

used are shown in this catalogue. The Yale Lock (pin-tumbler type) is to be preferred for the best work, and where great security is desired, while for other uses other types are available, both w ith flat and with round keys.

M any of

them admit of being master-keyed, for use on lockers in club rooms, armories, etc-, or on cupboards and drawers in offices, factories, etcThe selection should always, if possible, be made from samples, and the customer urged to select locks whose security and construction are fairly adapted to the intended use.

T r u n k L oc k s .

O u r line o f T ru n k Locks is equally extensive,

embracing a great variety of kinds, sizes, and grades, adapted for every use.

A few of the kinds most largely used are shown herewith.

Special attention is invited to the N o. TB 600, page 172, which is a Yale Lock with Paracentric keys, and of higher grade and greater se curity than any Trunk Lock heretofore obtainable.

R Springs are widely used and are of many kinds; nearly

always they are annoying and objectionable, except when com bined w ith a D oor Check to control them. The combination of a D oor Spring and Check in one device pro duces the ideal result, and this device is rapidly superseding the use of the plain D oor Spring. The earliest door checks were of the pneumatic or air type, in which an air cushion is employed to control the effect of the spring on the door, but experience has shown that the leather packing, which is a necessary feature in all such checks, is only effective while it remains soft, that it soon becomes hard and that thereafter the check is useless. The L iquid D oor Check, of which the Blount is the earliest and best example, overcomes all of these difficulties and affords an absolutely satisfactory and permanent device. A door w ith this device keeps out cold, draughts, noise and odors, and is silent. Doors so equipped can’ t be slammed or left open; the action is quick, firm and noiseless. A D oor Check and Spring is now rather a necessity than a lux ury on most outside, and many inside doors; its field of usefulness is constantly increasingAs said above the only successful door checks are those of the liquid type, and the “ B lount,” since its introduction more than ten

1 . Sc P. Blount D oo r Check combines a powerful coil

spring (which furnishes the motive power to close the door) and a metallic piston m oving in a metallic cylinder against a non-freezing liquid (which furnishes the checking or controlling power). A simple regulating valve enables these two powers to be so adjusted, relatively' to each other, as to give any desired action to the door, whereby it w ill always be positively closed but under a control which prevents slamming. The working parts are immersed in a lubricating fluid, so that the wear resulting from continued use is inappreciable, and the device when once properly adjusted in place w ill continue indefinitely to func tion without further care or expense. Its general appearance and construction w ill be apparent from the illustrations on opposite page.

It is made in six sizes and various

finishes; it can be adapted to doors of all kinds and shapes. F o r names o f num bered parts shown on opposite page see page 185.

H ow to Select the Proper Check T H E S IZ E R E Q U I R E D :— Consult table on page 184 givin g size based on standard doors and usual conditions.

T he Check should always be of

ample size; if too small for the door it will not control it effectively and is liable to be broken.

F or doors exposed to severe draughts use a check one

size larger than called for in table.

Doors with metal frames or heavy glass

panels require a heavier check than ordinary doors of equal size. T H E M E T H O D O F A T T A C H M E N T :— R efer to the illustration (on opposite page) show ing the position in which the Check is to be placed; the text will indicate the hand o f door and whether or not a bracket is necessary. Avoid using brackets where not really needed. C H E C K S W I T H O U T B R A C K E T S , applied to inner or hinge side of doors (F igs. 1 and 2), are recommended wherever the conditions permit. W H E N A B R A C K E T IS R E Q U I R E D the Soffit bracket (F ig . 3), should be used if possible. T he Jamb bracket (F ig . 4) enables a check to be placed in the lim ited space between doors, as in the case o f a F ro n t D oor and Storm or Screen D oor. A special Soffit bracket (fo r this location) is also supplied fo r this use when it is not possible to apply bracket to jamb. T h e closing pow er o f a check so applied is not equal, how ever, to that of a check regu larly applied, and th erefore w ith heavy doors an a u xilia ry spring should be used. T h e minim um distance “R ” (F ig . 4) occupied by a check applied in this manner is as fo llo w s: S ize N o. 1, 3^4 inches; N o. 2, 3 l/ 2 inches; N o. 3, 3^4 inches; No. 4, 4 inches; N o. 5, 4 inches, and No. 6, 4^/2 inches. T h e C orner bracket (F ig . 5) does not perm it the C heck to stand as far from hinge edge of door as other brackets, and as is desirable, and is only recom m ended when ad ditional strength is necessary. T h e F lu sh bracket, how ever, (F ig . 6) m ay be used when the su rface o f the jam b is not w ide enough fo r the foot o f the Soffit bracket. T he F la t bracket (illustration om itted fo r lack o f space) is provided for Round Top D oors w hen check is applied to the door. Chain Blocks \X7’E are the makers of the original W eston Differential Pulley Block, the pioneer o f all chain blocks. W e are also makers o f the D up le x Screw Block, the best m iddle grade Block 011 the market, and the Triplex Spur-Gear Block, pre eminently the best and most efficient Chain Block in the world.

Each

of these three types has its legitimate field o f usefulness. Chain Blocks can often be handled and sold to good advantage by hardware dealers, and

special catalogues will be furnished, on

request, for distribution to consumers. It pays to carry Chain Blocks in stock.

They are frequently

needed in great haste, in cases o f break-down or other emergency, and the dealer who has a few in stock, and can make spot delivery, gets the business and often at his own price. T he advantage o f using up-to-date equipm ent for lifting loads which are too heavy to move by hand is effectively shown by this picture. each one

Asylum Locks JN

like manner we have an extensive line o f locks designed es pecially for use in hospitals, reform

schools and other public

Such locks, particularly for

insane asylums, are exceptionally exposed to attack, and should be constructed to meet the conditions which thus arise. H ere also we need full inform ation concerning the conditions under which the locks are to be used, and in return will be pleased to subm it corresponding inform ation as to sizes, kinds and prices, together with samples where necessary.
