As such the bread moulds found at me Merenptah temple must be considered old piec , and should perhaps be considered contemporary with context 71303. Almost all of the examples found in. or under, the temple of Merenptah bear four impressions two rows of two - near the base, though in some there were six, and at other times only two, evid nd made t'ither with the potters· finger or with some kind of sc.1!stonc. These four impressions are presunubl an ad1111111str;1tive device probably de ignating a pecific b,1kay. these Canaanite jars, both in terms of shape and f: b . . . a nc, are known firom QantJ.r, m contexts which date to the reign of Ramesses II. The parallels cited above show clearly that most of this material dates firmly be~een the reigns of Arnenophis III and Ramesses II, with some possible extensions at either end. Since the pottery found in 'b' - 'g' contexts are sealed beneath the palace floor it is evident that none of this material can be later than the reign ofMerenptah. As such it falls entirely within BOURRIAU's New King355 dom Phase 3, and HOPE's Phase 3 early. 356 BOURRIAU divided her Phase 3 at the end of the Amarna Period, after the reign ofTutankhamun, into an earlier (3A) and later (3B) sub-phase. In contrast to BOURRIAU, HOPE is adamant that no division is possible at the end of the reign of Akhenaten (as BOURRIAU first proposed in 1981, reassigned to the end of the reign ofTutankhamun in 1990). Whilst I would agree with Bourriau, 357 this is a moot point as far as the material ~om under t?e pal_ace is concerned, since it is not possible to sub-divide 1t. However, 1.t is clear that the pottery utilised in the fill was, for the most part, probably contemporary with the buil~ng of the temple, and is presumably to be dated to the reigns of Ramesses II or Merenptah.

The question may thus be asked whetl1er any of ilie material found within the temple proper during the present restoration can in any way be actually associated witl1 the use of the temple, which naturally leads to ilie further question as to whether the publication of it adds any new ki1owledge. In essence the ceraniic material is very sinular to the material foun d boili in the priests' house and to that found under the workshops; hardly any sherds are earlier, and scarcely any sherds are later. Hence the shallow dishes ";th direct or modelled rims made of Nile B2 or ile D clays, most often in an w1coated ware, invariably with a red rim band ; tl1e deeper bowls with direct rin1s, again often with red rim bands; flat-based plates; carinated bowls, flat-based beer jars, of the type with wide, deeply finger-impressed bases, funnel-necked jars, bottles, slender neckless jars, bread moulds, meat jars, II. Eo2 amphorae, deco rated Marl A4 bowls, and oases amphorae ace all present. Comments are therefore only applied to any vessel types not already covered in previous chapters. For most of these areas so little pottery remained that it is here presented purely typologically, each sector being treated separately, rather than by locus numbers. Canaani~e jan. The base of the Canaanite jar, ra th er wide and may be indicative of Iron I cacher 11am LB 11B. Pottery from the Second Court is similar to that found in the First Court. The more interesting pieces are probably the 'cup-and-saucer' 2474 and the pithos 2486. The large dish with trimmed rim in Nile B2 red slipped ':'are, 2482, may date from the late Eighteenth Dynasty smce many similar vessels have been found at Saqqara in the tombs ofHoremheb and Maya. The beer jar 2479 has no indented finger impressions in the base. Whilst this may be a chance result of manufacture, it is probably significant that at Elephantine, beer jars from the Libyan Period generally do not exhibit the deep finger impressions found on those datable to the Late New Kingdom. The Marl B cup 2488 is unusual, but a cup of the same fabric was found in a Nineteenth Dynasty context at Qantir. 587 Very little pottery was recovered from the First Hypostyle Hall. Slightly more pottery was found in the Second Hypostyle Hall than in the First, but again comprises similar material to that already found in the priests' house and the workshops. Once again very little pottery remained in Area 8. The blue-painted carinated bowl, 2539, is clearly of the type ,veil-known in Twentieth Dynasty contexts at Deir el-Medina and in the Valley of the Kings. The bread plate, 2541, is highly unusual in having two rows of decorative finger impressions on the exterior. The blue-painted Marl ~ jar sherds, 2544-45, are very finely executed, and, for this reason may date to the mid-Eighteenth Dynasty. The material recovered in the passage between the rear of the temple and the Western Enclosure Wall is again similar to the material found in the priests' house and the workshops. Although not shown on the general plan, Area 16 lies immediately to the south of the workshops. The two pieces published from here probably date to the Nineteenth Dynasty, and thus may be associated with the use of the temple, though this is uncertain. In addition to these designated areas a number of test trenches were also made, some pieces from which are illustrated as nos. 2680-2707. Not surprisingly the published material from these seems to predate the construction of the temple. Comparisons with pottery found in the north of

Much nuirl· pottay came from the well area for two reasons. FiNly ,1 number of trenches were dug in this area during the seventh campaign, 593 in particular trenches 71 JO 1, 71302,71305 and 71306, cf. above page 2..j., fig 6. Thnl· trenches not only cut through the well which 11.tturally is no earlier than the date of the temple, but also l'Xposed material which underlay the temple itself. To be sure thl· pottery from trench 71302 was very similar in rlur.1crer to that recovered from 71303, and a case could h.1\·c been made for including it within the chaptn l!l'\"Otcd to 71303. However, unlike 71303, the pottery fro111 these trenches was less homogeneous in character, ,111d. containing material from the mid Eighteenth I >yn.1sty to the Coptic Period, is here relegated to the 'l'l non on loose surface material found within the temple: Secondly. the well was evidently filled in, either dd1her.1tcly. or through natural causes, at some point after thl· ll'mplc wrnt out of use, but either way this filling ront.uned numerous potsherds. Merenptah temple magazines . Group 22 _ Potstands. Nile clay potstands, continu~ on from Phase 4-A. They are generally left incoated or given a red slip. Group 23. Flat-based Beer Jars. Beer jars, made of uncoated Nile clays continue to be common, and as in phase 4A tend to have narrower bases when compared to Phase 3 vessels. Group 24. Slender Jars with Flaring Necks. Nile clay jars with flaring necks continue from Phase 4A. The illustrated example exhibits the tendency for some of these vessels to be decorated with white and black bands on a red slip. A number of smaller vessels, particularly from Memphis, are also decorated with red, black and white bands on a distinctly orange slip. Group 2 5. Globular Jars. Globular jars invariably made of Nile clays, form the continuation of a type known previously in Phase 4-A: They are very conunon. and are usually now found either with a cream slip. though. uncoated, red slipped or white slipped examples are also encountered. Group 26. Bottles with Rolled Rims and Round Bases. Bottles with round bases and rollt'd rims. invariably made of Nile clays. form the continuation of a type known in Phase 4A. They are usually found either with a rt'd slip, or more often, white slipped with a red rim band, though uncoated examples and white slipped
