Our core mission at Tuttle Publishing is to create books which bring people together one P .at a time.
Tuttle was founded in 1832 in the small New England town of Rutland, Vermont (USA). Our fundamental values remain as strong today as they were then—to publish best-in-class books informing the ~~ English-speaking world about the countries and peoples of Asia. The world has become a smaller place today and Asia’s economic, cultural and political influence has expanded, yet the need for meaningful dialogue and information about this diverse region has never been greater. Since 1948, Tuttle has been a leader in publishing books on the cultures, arts, cuisines, languages and literatures of Asia. Our authors and photographers have won numerous awards and Tuttle has published thousands o f books on
subjects ranging from martial arts to paper crafts. We welcome you to explore the wealth of information available on Asia at www.tuttlepublishing.com.

A preposition links nouns, pronouns, and phrases to other words in a sentence and indicates the relationship between them. Prepositions in Arabic can be either separate words, such as d e e (at theplace of), =

and . (in), which are attached to the noun that follows them. Most prepositions can take pronoun suffixes (Sled), las

Ending vowels
oY
The last letter of definite and indefinite nouns and adjectives takes a vowel to indicate the grammatical role o f the word in the sentence. Ending vowels are
used in classical Arabic, Qur’anic recitations, religious texts and formal
speeches. Beyond their grammatical role they add beauty and rhythm to texts
recited. In the standard language, ending vowels are usually omitted in speaking and reading aloud. However, they are needed in two cases:
* When a word has a possessive pronoun: 2
This is his house. * Before ‘alif wasla (Joos)
2e

1. Don’t analyze the grammatical role o f words in Arabic sentences by using the English translation. In many cases the grammatical roles are different. For example: in the Arabic sentence: o l l

Cs iS the subject of the Arabic sentence,
while in the English translation the word house is the object. Remember, in Arabic, everything that someone has or does not have is the subject. 2. The demonstrative adjective ( F E N or] — oda 1 a ) is part of the noun and does not affect the ending vowels. For example, in the sentence:
cad RON o s S o
(I live in this house), the word c o d

3. When you add ending vowels, ignore proper nouns. —

Indefinite nouns and adjectives

Marking indefinite nouns, subjects, predicates, and objects is simple.
They take the same vowel as their definite counterparts, but this vowel is
doubled. For example: a definite subject takes i a ,
while an indefinite
¥
subject takes double 4_._>. The same changes occur in nouns and adjectives with i >
