V o r w o r t .

Die Nachrichten, welche die Arabischen Biographen über das Leben und die Schriften des B e k i ' i erhalten haben, sind von D o z y 1 ) sorgfältig gesammelt und danach von de S l a n e 2 ) übersichtlich wiederholt, welcher damit zugleich das ungünstige Urtheil über B e k r i ' s geographisches Wörterbuch M u ' g a m zurückgenommen h a t , welches er früher auf Grund eines dürftigen Auszuges dieses Werkes, den er in Constantine sah, gefällt hatte. Um Alles zu geben, was die Handschriften bieten, habe ich Seite f f t auch das schon von D o z y mitgetheilte Stück aus Ibn Chàcàn's in der vollständigen Bulaker 0 L«*J! lXjÌIs , welches nun auch Ausgabe Seite 11. vorliegt, aus dem Cambridger Codex des B e k r i abdrucken lassen, worin ein Paar unwesentliche Stellen ausgelassen sind, sonst aber einige beachtenswerthe Varianten vorkommen. Als neu kommt noch Seite f f o die kurze Notiz aus demselben Codex hinzu, worin die Lehrer des B e k r i erwähnt werden, welche zu den berühmtesten Gelehrten Spaniens gehören: Abu Marwàn Ibn Hajjitn, Abu Bekr el-Mashafi d. i. der Koran-Abschreiber, Abul-'Abbàs el-'Udsri, den er in el-Marija 8 ) hörte, und der berühmteste von allen, Abu 'Omar Ibn 'Abd el-Barr, hatte unserm Bekri das Doctordiplom ausgefertigt. Seine eigenen und fremde Bücher, welche er für sich abschrieb, waren sehr schön ] ) Recherches sur l'histoire politique et Jittéraire de l'Espagne pendant le moyen age. Tome I. Leyde 1849. pag. 282: Notice sur les Becrites, seigneurs d'Huelva et de Djezirah Schaltisch, et sur la vie et les ouvrages du célèbre géographe Abu-Obaid-el-Becri. 4 und mit Vocalisation geschrieben und er ging so sorgfältig damit u m , dass er sie, um zu zeigen wie hoch er sie schätze, in feine Leinwandtücher einwickelte. Zu den von seinen Biographen aufgezählten Schriften gehört noch e i n , auch bei H a ' g i C h a l f a nicht vorkommendes, historisches Werk, welches er selbst S. HA, 15 anführt. Bekri starb hoch betagt im Jahre 487 (1094) und wurde auf dem Begräbnissplatze der U m m Salima 4 ) begraben. D e n Werth des vorliegenden Werkes des Bekri kann ich nicht besser darstellen, als es D o z y gethan h a t , dessen Urtheil ich deshelb hier wiederhole 5 ): Le Modjam est unique en son genre ; car bien certainement nous ne possédons aucun ouvrage qui puisse lui être comparé sous le rapport de l'étendue et de la scrupuleuse exactitude des détails. Il contient, dans l'ordre de l'alphabet africain, la nomenclature d'une foule de noms de lieu, de montagnes, de rivières etc., qui se trouvent mentionnés dans les anciennes histoires arabes, dans lès traditions qui se rapportent au Prophète, dans les poèmes surtout. L'auteur en donne l'orthographe, en indique la situation, et cite une quantité innombrable de vers où ces noms propres se trouvent. Or, rien ne cause autant d'embarras quand on lit les anciennes poésies arabes, que ces noms de lieu dont nous ignorons presque toujours l'orthographe et la situation. Ce livre est donc d'un secours inappréciable pour résoudre ces sortes de difficultés; il est indispensable à tous ceux qui étudient l'ancienne histoire, la géographie, les anciens poèmes,' les traditions plus ou moins historiques. Enfin, je J'ai déjà d i t , mais je le répète, il est unique. Tout le reste de ce que nous possédons sur cette matière, est maigre, décharné, inexact surtout, en comparaison de ce magnifique ouvrage, rempli de détails curievix, composé a l'aide des meilleurs matériaux, aujourd'hui presque tous perdus, par un littérateur et un géographe qui était parfaitement à la hauteur de sa tâche difficile. Les autres géographes ne servent souvent qu'à nous embrouiller davantage; ils entassent erreurs sur erreurs, contradictions sur contradictions. Prenez un nom de lieu qui se trouve dans un ancien poème, et cherchez-le — je ne dis pas dans le Merdcid; cet ouvrage est au dessous de la critique sous ce rapport, — mais dans un ouvrage géographique quelconque; supposez que le nom s'y trouve (ce qui est très - rarement le cas), et comparez les renseignements du géographe en question avec ceux d'al-Becri: alors, je ne crains pas de le dire, on verra presque toujours que les premiers sont erronés, ou tout au moins très-confus, tandis que ceux d'al-Becri sont clairs, lucides, explicites, vrais enfin. Le mérite de cet ouvrage iest encore rehaussé par l'introduction, où l'auteur indique les limites de l'Arabie et de ses provinces, al-Hidjâz, Tahamah et al-Yémen; où il parle des tribus arabes qui demeuraient dans ces provinces, et où il donne l'histoire des changements do demeure de ces tribus. 4) Die Stadt, wo dieser lag, wird nicht genannt. 5) Recherches — — pag. 304 —S05.

5 Diese Vorrede habe ich meiner Abhandlung über die Wohnsitze und Wanderungen der Arabischen Stämme 6 ) zum Grunde gelegt und darin vollständig übersetzt; nur wenige Stellen sind nach der Yergleichung der Handschriften etwas anders aufzufassen und das Stück Seite tf, Z. 5—18 ist aus der Mailänder Handschrift hinzugekommen. Zu unserer Ausgabe sind die vier in Europa bekannten Handschriften benutzt worden. 1. L. Der Leidener Codex No. 421 Warn, jetzt DCCXXIIF) besteht aus zwei Bänden, ist im Jahre 709 (1309) ziemlich correct mit Neschi Schrift geschrieben, entbehrt aber sehr häufig der diacritischen Punkte. Bei einem Besuche in Leiden ini Jahre 1847, wo ich mehrere Wochen die Gastfreundschaft des Prof. D o z y genoss, gestattete der liebenswürdige J u v n b o l l als I n t e r p r e s l e g a t i W a r n e r i a n i , dass ich die Handschrift mit mir nehmen durfte, um sie zunächst für mich abzuschreiben. Ich habe mir angemerkt, dass ich mit dem ersten Theile am Weihnachtsfeste 1847 zu Ende kam , die Abschrift des zweiten Theiles fiel in die unruhigen Tage des Jahres 1848, jedoch war ich zu Ostern damit fertig. Seitdem habe ich mit Herbeiziehung der verschiedensten Hülfsmittel an der Verbesserung des Textes gear^ beitet, bis es mir im Anfange des Jahres 1865 gelang, 2. C. den Cambridger Codex hierher zu bekommen durch die Verwendung meines Schülers S i d g w i c k , f e l l o w of T r i n i t y C o l l e g e , bei dem academischen Senat* Es ist dies das Exemplar, welches B u r c k h a r d t im Orient erwarb und an einigen Stellen seiner Reisebeschreibung benutzt hat 8 ). Die merkwürdige Geschichte dieses Codex, wie sie der gelehrte Besitzer und Ergänzer in einer Nachschrift erzähl^ ist Seite f f f abgedruckt und das Wesentlichste daraus folgendes: Der Codex besteht aus einem alten Fragment und einer neuen Ergänzung. Das alte Fragment gehörte zu einem Exemplare, welches in drei Bände zerlegt war, und enthält von diesen den größten Theil des zweiten Bandes, von 2ls> S. HP bis ^-J^ljLo, womit der Buchstab schliesst, mit einigen durch den Ergänzer 6) Aus dem 14. Bande der Abhandlungen der Königl. 6 ausgefüllten Lücken 9 ). Bs ist dies eine der besten Arabischen Handschriften, die wir haben, in schöner magribiniseher Schrift geschrieben, vollständig vocalisirt und fast ganz fehlerfrei. Dieses Fragment kam in den Besitz des Haniiitischen Gelehrten Ibrahim ben Suleimän ben Muhammed ben 'Abd el-'Aziz el-'Ginini zu Damaskus, welcher aus einem ebenfalls alten Magribinischen Codex, der vom Jahre 585 (1189) datirt und angeblich mit der Original-Handschrift des Bekri verglichen war, jene Lücken im zweiten Theile ergänzte und den dritten Theil von ^ bis zum Schlüsse im Jahre 1095 (1684) hinzufügte. Von dem ersten Theile konnte er lange Zeit kein Exemplar auftreiben, bis ihm nach dreijährigen Bemühungen sein Freund, der Scheich Hasan el-'A'gimi, aus Mekka meldete, dass dort ein Codex des Bekri aus Ägypten angekommen sei. Auf Ibrahim's Wunsch nahm Hasan hiervon eine Abschrift und sandte sie nach Damaskus, wo Ibrähim dann den ersten Theil bis J J l s » im J . 1100 (1689) für sein Exemplar copierte. — Auch diese Ergänzungen sind im Ganzen sehr correct und mit vielen Vocalen versehen. 3. B. Ein Codex im Britischen Museum t erst in neuerer Zeit erworben 1 0 ), enthält nur den ersten Theil bis zum Ende des Buchstaben j>. Prof. W r i g h t , welcher mir die erste Nachricht von dieser Erwerbung gab, war dann so gütig, eine Anzahl von Stellen, welche ich excerpirt hatte, zu vergleichen und bei meiner Anwesenheit in London habe ich selbst nach dem OrientälistenCongress im September 1874 der Vergleichung noch einige Tage gewidmet, jedoch fast ganz ohne Nutzen. Der Codex ist in grossen Zügen, aber flüchtig geschrieben, der Schreiber hatte vermuthlich schon keine gute Vorlage, aus Unachtsamkeit sind manche W o r t e und Zeilen überschlagen, die diacritischen Punkte sind nicht zur Hälfte beigefügt, manche Zeilen entbehren dieselben gänzlich und von Vocalzeichen findet sich kaum eine Spur; die Verse sind grossentheils nicht besonders abgesetzt, sondern gleich in der Zeile weiter geschrieben. Die Namen der Artikel und die Namen der Dichter sind wohl durch grössere Züge (Thuluthschrift) hervorgehoben, das Ganze ist indess wenig übersichtlich. 9) Genau ist dies nach der Angabe vonPröf.
