P R E F A C E .

A B U ' L - F A T H M U H A M M A D , the Author of this work, received the appellation of Al-Shahrastani from Shahrastan, his native place, a city in the province of Khurasan. According to the authority of Al-Samani 1 , who reports his own statement, he was born in the year of the Hijrah 479, or A.D. 1086. Ibn Khallikan, who cites this account from Al-Samani, observes also that he had found among his own memoranda a note attributed to this same author, assigning the date of his birth to the year of the Hijrah 467; but at the same time he makes the remark, that he had forgotten from what source he had taken this note. Al-Shahrastani studied Jurisprudence under Ahmad al-Khawafi and Abu Nasr al-Cushairi, in which science, as well as that of Scholastic Theology, he attained great distinction: his preceptor in this latter branch of study was Abu '1-Casim al-Ansari. He was addicted to the sect of the Asharites, of whose tenets he has given an account in the work before us.2

In the year of the Hijrah 510, as stated by lbn Khallikiin3, he made a visit to Bagdad, and continued to reside there for three years, being treated with the greatest attention and respect. sight of it, and the very mountains would tremble: its burning heat would be more intolerable than that of the glowing coals of the Gada;1 and should the inhabitants of hell be tormented with it, they would be glad to fly for refuge to the punishments which they now endure, as to a place of repose." Al-Shahrastani died in his native city in the year of the Ilijrah 548, A.l). 1153. He is the author of several important works. Ibn 2 Khallikan mentions three; l. Nihayat al-Icdam fi ilm alKalam; 2. This present work; 3. Talkhis al-Aksam limadahib al-Anam? To these Ibn al-Mulaccin adds a fourth, called Masaraat al-Falasifat4, and Abulfeda a fifth, named Al-Manahtj.5 He wrote likewise an account of Philosophers, entitled Tarikh al-IIukama'\ and probably also other works; he speaks himself of one in the book before us.7 But the most celebrated of all his labours is his Treatise on the Religious and Philosophical Sects; which was composed, as it appears from his own statement, about the year of the Hijrah 521s, A.D. 1127. It is held in high estimation among the learned in the East, and not only has its authority been 1

frequently cited, but it has also been translated both into the Persian1 and Turkish 2 languages. It was first made known in Europe by the excellent Dr. Edward Pocock, wlio, having obtained a copy of the work during his residence in the Levant, has frequently cited it in his famous Specimen Historic Arabum, published in the year 1649. Abraham Echellensis 3 has given a list of Muhammadan Sects, derived from this author, in his reply to Selden, printed A.D. 1661, of which Maracci,4 Steph. Evod. Assemani5, and Sale 6 have availed themselves. De Sacy 7 has likewise taken an extract from this book; and Schmolders 8 and others have also made use of it. As I hope to be able to fulfil the intention which I have announced, of publishing an English translation of the whole of this work, I abstain at present from entering into any farther details respecting it, than merely to give the following very brief outline of the nature of its contents. After five introductory chapters, the author proceeds to arrange his book into two great divisions; the one comprising the Religious, the other the Philosophical Sects. followers of Muhammad, and likewise of those to whom a true revelation had been made, i—jII(!I Ja>l, that is, Jews and Christians; and of those who had a doubtful or pretended revelation,

T h e second division comprises an account of the philosophical opinions of the Sabeans, which are mainly set forth in a very interesting dialogue between a Sabean and an orthodox Muhammadan; of the tenets of various Greek Philosophers and some of the Fathers of the Christian Church ; and also of the Muhammadan Doctors, more particularly of the system of Ibn Sina, or Avicenna, which the author explains at considerable length.

The work terminates with an ac-

count of the tenets of the Arabs before the commencement of Islamism, and of the religion of the people of India. I reserve, also, my observations respecting the sources from which this author has probably derived his information for the Preface to the English translation. o

The various readmes, o "

conjectural emendations, and list of errata, which should have accompanied this second volume of the text, I have thought it prudent to postpone till the translation shall have been completed.

This task will impose upon me the neces-

sity of re-considering with the greatest care every sentence, as well as of re-examining the whole w o r k ; and I trust also to have an opportunity of collating entirely the two MSS. at Oxford 1 , which at present 1 have only consulted as to certain passages of great doubt and difficulty, through the assistance of Professor Reay, who always has been ready most kindly to make the collations that I required. The following is a list of the MSS. upon which my edition of this work has been f o r m e d : — I. It consists of about 240 leaves. There is no notice of the writer, or of the date of its transcription; but a note at the end of the volume states that one Zakariya Ibn Barakat read it at the end of the year of the Hijrah 613, A.D. 1217, or not more than about 65 years after the author's death. This MS. is not very correct: the diacritical points are frequently omitted, especially in such passages as are otherwise obscure. It belongs to the library of the University of Leyden, No. 447, ex legato Levini Warneri. 2. A recently transcribed volume, badly written, but which appears to have followed a good copy. It contains only part of the work, from the beginning to the chapter on Hermes ^w-ojib i^Cs-1 inclusively. This also is the property of the University of Leyden, No. 711, ex legato Levini Warneri. I am indebted for the use of these two MSS. to the late much-lamented Professor Weyers; and I gladly seize this opportunity of acknowledging his kindness, and at the same time of expressing my deep sympathy with those who deplore the early loss of this very able scholar and truly estimable man. 3. A volume, on silk paper, in quarto, consisting of about 200 leaves. There is no note of the time of transcription; but the book is very antient. It is written in a difficult character; and although the diacritical points are not unfrequently omitted, the vowels are occasionally added. This volume belongs to Dr. John Lee of Hartwell House, who not only granted me the loan of it, but has most kindly allowed me to retain it in my possession for a period of nearly six years, during which time this work has been carried through the press. It affords me much pleasure to have such an occasion of bearing my testimony to Dr. Lee's extraordinary liberality, who has always been ready to throw open the extensive ' See p.

oriental treasures of his library to scholars both at home and abroad. 4. An octavo volume, on paper, consisting of about 300 leaves, written in a Persian hand by one Muhammad Sádic, an inhabitant of Lahore, in the year of the Hijrah 1181, A.D. 1767. This MS. is badly transcribed; and in some instances the scribe has evidently written from dictation, without at all understanding what he wrote; but the copy which he followed appears to have been good. To the end of the work in this MS. is appended an extract from an historical work by Abd al-Cúdir al-Bagdádi, SJJ, jJyl J ^ l jjUJI. This belongs to the library of the Honourable East-India Company, and I am indebted for the use of it to the librarian, the highly distinguished President of the Society under whose auspices this book is printed. 5. A MS., on silk paper, in octavo, containing 250 leaves, transcribed in the year of the Hijrah 893, A.D. 1448. This is in general the most carefully transcribed of any of the copies which I have used; but in several instances either the writer of this volume, or of that whose authority he has followed, seems to have ventured upon corrections or improvements upon that which the concurrence of the other copies seems to determine to be the text of the author himself. In many cases of doubt and uncertainty, occasioned by the great discrepancy of the copies before me, I have chosen the reading of this MS. as generally being the most correct. It appertains to the collection, now deposited in the British Museum, of Mr. C. J. Rich, late English Resident at Bagdad. Additional MS. No. 7250.1 6. have been added, but they are not always to be depended upon. There are various corrections in the margin, and it is preceded by an alphabetical index of the contents. This belongs to the same collection as the preceding. Additional MS. No. 7251. Besides these copies of the original work, I have also made use of the Persian translation belonging to the library of the East-India Company, and likewise of the author's History of Philosophers which has been kindly lent me by my friend Mr. Bland. I have not, indeed, found it stated anywhere in this latter book that it is the production of Al-Shahrastani; but the comparison of numerous passages in it with others of the book of Religious and Philosophical Sects, in which almost the same expressions occur, can scarcely leave any question as to the identity of their authorship. It remains for me now to add a word or two respecting the manner in which I have made use of these MSS. in my edition of this work. My object has been in every instance to endeavour, upon the evidence before me, to ascertain to the best of my judgment what the author himself wrote, and to make that my text. I conceive it to be the duty of an editor to represent faithfully even all the manifest errors of his author, and to make his own corrections or observations thereon in notes or otherwise; nor ought he, upon his own authority, to make any change of expression, or even to alter a single word, for the sake of improving the style or of giving it greater perspicuity. I mention this, because I believe I have discovered some errors as to facts in parts of this book; and further, because the style of the author, being a native of Khurasan, is frequently not in perfect accordance with the precepts of the best Arabic grammarians: and I have therefore often passed over a reading in one MS. which appeared to me in itself to be the most preferable, when the authority of the rest of the copies has preponderated in favour

of' another. It appears much more probable that phrases not strictly grammatical or logical should have been corrected in one MS. by a scribe of taste and intelligence, than that different scribes should have made exactly the same solecism in four or five other copies, both of greater and less antiquity. In many instances, particularly in the case of proper names, I have often found that no two copies agreed together, and that not even one was consistent with itself. This has caused me great embarrassment. Indeed, the difficulties which I have had to contend with on this account can only be understood by those who have been engaged in similar labours. The great carelessness of transcribers in omitting the diacritical points, by which alone several different letters can be distinguished, and in confounding similar letters with each other in the names of persons or places, concerning which they have been ignorant, and where the context would furnish no guide, have often so completely corrupted and transformed the word, that it has become almost impossible to restore it. This I have found to be especially the case in the account of the religions of India. With respect to the names taken from the Greek I have had some more certain grounds to rely upon; but these also have been so perverted, that sometimes I have only been able to restore them by taking one element from the reading of one MS., and another from a second, and so on. In the chapter on the tenets of the antient Arabians I have experienced very great difficulty, in consequence of the extreme variety in the several copies; and although I have consulted other works, both printed and manuscript, in which the same verses as are given in that chapter have been cited, I have found that the still increased discrepancy only augmented my embarrassment. When, therefore, I have been unable otherwise to come to a decision, I have usually followed the reading of the MS. No. 5, mentioned above, which, although I will not venture to affirm that it be of greater authority than any of the others, has certainly the

advantage over the rest of having been written by a more learned and intelligent scribe. In the fifth introductory chapter Al-Shahrastani has given various Symbols, which, by being prefixed, were designed to mark the several divisions and sub-divisions into which he has distributed his work. In some of the copies these are left out altogether, and in none are they uniformly and constantly retained. Being, therefore, unable to give them accurately, I have omitted them, because they are in no way essential to the work; and the author himself confesses that he only introduced them at all to gratify his own vanity of proving that, although he was a Jurisconsult and a Theologian, he was not on that account ignorant of the principles and rules of arithmetical arrangement. In editing, for the first time, a work of so great extent, and embracing such a vast variety of subjects, it is impossible that I can altogether have avoided errors of oversight; and it is pardonable if I have fallen into others of ignorance. I know that the unlearned are always the severest critics; for although they may be able to perceive a mistake when pointed out to them, or even to discover it for themselves, they are not sufficiently instructed either to understand how difficult it is always to avoid error, or duly to appreciate that which is correct. To such this book is not accessible. I enjoy, therefore, the advantage of committing it into the hands of the learned, who, being able to estimate the difficulty of my undertaking and the labour which I have bestowed upon it, will be ready upon every occasion to accord me the fullest indulgence. ^LJ'31 ^
