Introduction

This handbook is written for the owner who wishes to find out more about his car and wants to keep it serviced fully, but with the minimum of effort, so that it gives economical, reliable performance. In this handbook are all the routine maintenance tasks required to keep the car running well, and the tools and other things needed to do it. All cars over three years old are subject to the official roadworthiness test. Details of what the tester will be looking for, and how to check them yourself are in this book. Guidance in looking at secondhand cars is given. Cars are not perfect, and diagnosing faults can be a great problem. Therefore a methodical

guide to fault finding is given. Much time and trouble can be saved if reference is made straight to this book instead of hopping from one thing to another. If success in tackling the jobs on your car given in this book encourages you to take on more complicated work, a yery useful Owners Workshop Manual is available from the publishers, or through all good accessory shops or booksellers.

Model

Identification

The overhead valve Reliant Regals were introduced in 1962 in saloon car and van form, and designated the 3/25 series. The power unit was the Reliant designed and manufactured allaluminium 600 cc engine, mounted in a steel box-section chassis fitted with a glass fibre body. Subsequent years saw minor changes and the introduction of the 21E version, with its added instrumentation and lights, in 1967, but it was not until August 1968 that any major change was announced. This introduced the

3/30 series with a 700 cc all-aluminium engine for both

the car and van, and it is this version which is currently being produced.

Vehicle identification plate The identification plate is mounted below the hinged bonnet and carries both chassis and engine numbers. Whenever spare parts or accessories are required, both numbers should be quoted together with the vehicle model type.

General

Information

Controls, switches and instruments All controls etc can be considered to be of a conventional type and therefore require little explanation. The following points should, however, be noted:

Warning lights: These are clustered around the binnacle mounted speedometer, and are as follows: Red — Green Amber Blue —

ignition warning light — low oil pressure warning light — direction indicator warning light headlamp main beam warning light

boot and driver’s door; the passenger’s door is locked from inside the car. A separate key is provided for the hinged bonnet panel. Tyres and Wheels The correct tyre for the Reliant Regal is size 5.20 x 13 tubeless. It is permitted, although not desirable,

to fit radials provided

that they

are on all three wheels. After fitment of new tyres they should be ‘run-in’ for approximately 100 miles and a careful check kept of tyre pressures. It is good practice to periodically remove stones from the tyre tread and generally check for bulges cuts etc. It is recommended that fitment and removal

of tyres, together

Ignition switch: This is operated by turning the ignition key clockwise to the first position. Further clockwise movement operates the starter. Note: immediately the engine has started the key should be released and allowed to return to the first position. Choke control: The choke control, which incorporates a stop to prevent over-rich mixture except in extremely cold conditions, is operated by pulling outwards. Lighting switch: This is a three position toggle switch: up - off, middle - side and rear lights, down - headlights. Direction indicator switch: A three position lever switch is fitted and is of the self-cancelling type on models up to chassis No 624674 (car) and 635645 (van). Gear change lever: The gear positions are shown in the drawing, but it is important to note that before reverse gear can be selected, the lever must be lifted slightly. Seats: The front seats are adjustable for reach and the backs are hinged to permit entry to the rear seat. Locks: The ignition key also locks the rear

with repairing punctures, is left to atyre factor or properly equipped garage. A scissor-type jack, which can be used anywhere on the car chassis, is provided to enable the car to be lifted for wheel changing. Before lifting, the aluminium hub caps should be sprung off, and the four road wheel nuts slackened slightly. After refitment of a wheel, the wheel nuts should be initially tightened with car still lifted then finally tightened after lowering the car to the ground.

Frost precautions

In winter operating conditions, a solution of water and 20—30 per cent anti-freeze should be used in the cooling system. Any anti-freeze used must conform to specification BS 3151 or BS 3152 (eg Castrol Anti-freeze). It should be remembered that any topping up of the radiator must be done using a

similar

strength

anti-freeze/water

mixture,

to

avoid dilution of the coolant. Before adding anti-freeze, the cooling system should be drained and flushed as described in the ‘Other Maintenance’ section of this handbook.

|Spares and Touring Pack Before undertaking any long journey, whether in this country or abroad it is advisable to thoroughly check your car and its contents. It is better to service your car early, before the exact required time if necessary, rather than put it off until your return. Breakdown services, accredited dealers and spare part availability for your car are not always there when you | need them particularly abroad and in outlying

| districts of Great Britain. There are two lists, one giving spares which should always be carried in the car and the other suggesting those which it is advisable to carry if undertaking a journey abroad. Some dealers are able to supply manufacturers recommended touring packs on an hire/buy-if-you-use basis. Always carry First aid box and manual Spare set of keys Gallon can of petrol with filler spout (full) List of car main agents Breakdown triangle (compulsory on the Continent) Torch (with red flashing dome) Fan belt Finilec puncture sealer Roll of PVC insulation tape Temporary plastic windscreen Length of electrical cable (heavy duty lighting circuit)

NonEnglish speaking mechanics will find valuable information about your ‘strange’ car in it. There are many mechanical terms common to differing languages - you can always point at the photographs, it may help!

. Tools To carry out the routine maintenance tasks in this book you will obviously need a reasonable set of tools. A really comprehensive tool kit will be expensive to purchase at one go - most home mechanics have built up a kit over the years as they have tackled new and more complicated maintenance and repair work. This way the cost is spread out. Remember though buy only the best quality (some spanners do break), keep them clean and in a safe place. The following list suggests the tools needed to undertake the work described in this book:
