1. Introduction The deformation behavior of crystals having rock-salt structure has been studied extensively within the last few years as a means of acquiring understanding of dislocation behavior in materials. These crystals have been chosen because of availability, ease of preparation of specimens, and (relatively) simple configuration of dislocations. Extensive work has been done on the deformation behavior of single crystals of sodium chloride, lithium fluoride, and magnesium oxide under unidirectional loading [1 to 5]. But, owing to the complicated nature of the resulting deformation, only a limited amount of research has been done on the cyclic stressing of these crystals. On the whole, the exact nature of the dislocation behavior in these crystals is not yet fully understood. In this article the behavior of rock-salt type crystals under cyclic stressing will be reviewed; the results will be compared with those from the unidirectional straining of rock-salt type crystals as well as the fatigue behavior of certain metals. Reviews of dislocation behavior in rock-salt type crystals, especially under unidirectional loading, are available in the literature [6 to 9], However,

a very brief s u m m a r y of the results and the mechanisms proposed for unidirectional loading is included in this article for better understanding of cyclic stressing of these crystals. 2. Slip Systems The slip systems in NaCl crystal structure are of the t y p e {110} . There are six such planes in a cubic structure. The projection of the six {110} slip planes in a cubic structure onto the (001) plane is shown in Fig. 1. Four of t h e slip planes have traces along the
