Preface The twentieth index volume contains volumes 139 to 144 of "physica status solidi (b) — basic research" as well as volumes 99 to 104 of "physica status solidi (a) — applied research", i.e. all volumes having appeared in 1987 containing 1287 papers. Beginning from January 1986 the International Classification System for Physics (Condensed Matter, items 60 and 70) of the International Council for Scientific and Technical Information, Abstracting Board completed by item 85 and a Substance Classification (both outside the ICSTI Classification for Physics) will be used for quoting papers in physica status solidi. Nevertheless, before taking over these subject classifications into the index volume they were once more carefully revised and in some cases improved and completed in order to get a most uniform and clear classification for all papers. The average number of quotations per paper in this index volume is about 2.7. Again I have to express my thanks to the readers for their interest, and I will always readily take up any critical remarks and proposals for improvements. I am especially obliged to Prof. Dr. E. Gutsche, Dr. H.-J. Hänsch, Dr. H. Lange, Dr. S. Oberländer, and Dipl. Phys. K. Müller for giving me advice and unselfish help. Furthermore I have to thank Mrs. E. Schwan for her exact and reliable secretary's work at the manuscript. Berlin, June 1988 Eva Borchardt

Some Comments on the Use of the Subject and Author Index The "International Classification System for Physics" (the condensed matter sections 60 and 70) completed by a "Substance Classification" (according to physica status solidi) is used. On cover two the second-level headings of the condensed matter sections and on pages 4 to 8 the third-level headings are reproduced. As a help for using the subject index on pages 11 and 12 in addition also a series of important fourth-level headings is given. The substance classification is published on cover three and on page 9. All papers will be quoted under each relevant section. There is made a distinction between one or two principal entries (refering to the main subject matter of the paper) and secondary entries (refering to subsidiary subject matter and substance, respectively). In the principal entries the title of the paper is given in its original language and in English. In addition, every principal entry is marked by * in front of the title of the paper. In the secondary entries the title is only given in English. On the line following the title the subject classification is given (in parantheses) in the same manner as in the volumes. Each entry gives the volume, the number of the issue, the initial and final page numbers, and the year in which the paper appeared. A paper of physica status solidi (b) or physica status solidi (a) is marked by (b) or (a) in front of the line, respectively. The letter " K " before the page numbers indicates' a short note published in the offset part of the journal. Review articles appear, at the head of the list of entries under a given subject and are marked. These articles are listed in the chronological order of their publication, irrespective of being a paper of physica status solidi (b) or physica status solidi (a). The subject classification for a review article consisting of several parts is based on the article as a whole rather than on the individual parts. The entries for original papers, short notes, and errata are made together in a single list for each subject and follow the entries for review articles. These are'again ordered according to data of publication, irrespective of being a paper of physica status solidi (b) or physica status solidi (a). Original papers are sometimes published in several parts under the same principal title (in general with special subtitles). The various parts of papers of this type are treated separately and each part is classified according to its particular contents. In quoting errata the following rule is obeyed. If the erratum refers to a paper quoted in the preceding index, it is listed in the chronological order of its publication otherwise the erratum is quoted together with the paper to which it refers. The author index gives the names of the authors in alphabetical order. Each name is followed by the bibliographic details of the paper. A paper of physica status solidi (b) or physica status solidi (a) is again marked by (b) or (a) in front of the number of the volume, respectively. In the last column the subject classification of the paper is presented in the same manner as in the volumes. When several papers have been published by the same author they are arranged according to the dates of publication, irrespective of being a paper of physica status solidi (b) or physica status solidi (a). To find a paper of your interest please choose first the special entry of the subject index and then use the volume number and page.

Manuscripts and letters for physica status solidi (b) — basic research and physica status solidi (a) — applied research should be sent to Leipziger Straße 3 4. P. B. 1233, DDR-1086 Berlin or Kunst und Wissen. Lirich Bieber O H G , Postfach 330104, D-1000 Berlin 33. The object of "physica status solidi (b)" and "physica status solidi (a)" is to publish rapidly important and topical results concerning fundamental research in the field of solid state physics and aspects of application and experimental techniques of fundamental solid state research, respectively. The issues of "physica status solidi (b)" and "physica status solidi (a)" will be published on the 1st and the 16th day of each month, respectively. Either series will contain the following categories: 1. Review articles written by arrangement with the editors. They will be remunerated. 2. Original papers selected from those which have not been submitted for publication elsewhere, after being reviewed. (The latest date for acceptance of contributions is the 8th and the 23rd day of each month for "physica status solidi (b)" and "physica status solidi (a)", respectively, 50 days before the delivery of the journal.) 3. Short notes published in the off-set part of the journal. They are, if necessary after being reviewed, selected by editorial staff. (The latest date for acceptance of manuscripts for this part is the 12th and the 27th day of each month for "physica status solidi (b)" and "physica status solidi (a)", respectively, 16 days before the delivery of the journal.) 4. Pre-printed titles of papers to be published in the next issue of both series.
Editorial Information Manuscripts should be submitted preferentially in English. Besides, papers in German, French, and Russian are admitted. The final decision on the incorporation of the papers in the series (b) or (a) is taken by the editorial staff after consultation of the referee. Papers on liquids are only published in physica status solidi if the problems treated are also relevant for the solid state. Authors are asked to observe the following rules: 1. Manuscripts have to be written as consisely as possible. At most, 20 and 4 pages (28 lines per page; abstracts, tables, references, figures, and captions of figures included, where 3 figures are counted as about one page) are admitted for original papers and short notes, respectively. All manuscripts should be typewritten on one side only. Two copies are required. Badly arranged manuscripts are returned. 2. The author's name, initials, and institution should be given. 3. One abstract of about ten lines in English and one in German, French, or Russian are required for original papers. 4. Because of lack of space conclusions (if any) must not have the character of a summary (i.e. substantially a repetition of the contents of the abstract). 5. Formulae should not be written too small and not with pencil. Separate lines for formulae are desirable. Indistinct writing will lead to a return of the manuscript. 6. Drawings should be enclosed on separate sheets of paper, not exceeding the maximum and minimum sizes of 20 x 30 and 1 0 x 1 5 cm 2 , respectively. Photographs should be submitted, on white paper, only for review articles and original papers. Duplicates are required. 7. Captions for the figures should be submitted on separate sheets of paper, and special instructions with regard to the size of illustrations should be given on these. 8. References should be numbered in order of appearance and should be given, on a separate sheet, in the form used in physica status solidi. 9. Si-units should be used. 10. Each paper must contain a proposal for the subject classification according to the classification scheme appearing in the January issues of each annual set. The authors will be sent galley proofs of review articles and original papers. Proof reading of short notes and pre-printed titles will be done by the editorial staff. For each original paper and short note a total of 75 reprints is available free of charge. The number of reprints free of charge per review article is 25. Requests for additional reprints (against payment) should be given together with the submitted manuscripts. The deadline for orders of additional reprints is the 15th and the 30th of each month for "physica status solidi (b)" and "physica status solidi (a)", respectively, two weeks before the delivery of the journal. All rights of reproduction, circulation, and translation are reserved by the publishers, within the legal terms of protection.
