Introduction Although many studies have been devoted to the social, philosophical, and literary sources from which the major novelists of the eighteenth century received their specific inspirations, there is a persistent— and certainly convenient — tendency to think of the English novel as suddenly emerging as a distinct genre in 1719 or in 1740, and to ignore or dismiss the numerous minor writers of prose fiction who were the contemporaries of Defoe and Richardson. This neglect is understandable. Copies of works by these obscure authors are comparatively rare, and the majority possess very little literary merit. These works, however, were the only immediate prose fictional background that the acknowledged masters of the novel had and, as such, they are worthy of attention. It is, therefore, to students of this neglected, but interesting and essential aspect of the history of English fiction that the following check list of titles is offered. In its compilation the most difficult problem has been the devising of standards for inclusion. To restrict it to those works which declare themselves to be novels would be both arbitrary and impractical. By early eighteenth-century standards, this restriction would be meaningless, for during that period of undirected fictional experimentation the novel, as a booksellers' commodity, had little accepted meaning other than that it was prose fiction and that it was not a romance. By 1700 the decline in popularity of the heroic romance in France had been paralleled in the tastes of the English reading public. Although the ponderous folio works which had delighted Dorothy Osborne and Mrs. Pepys occasionally appeared in smaller format, I have found only one new English work between 1700 and 1739 — Mrs. Jane Barker's Exilius (1715) —which was deliberately called a romance. The name, however, was more discredited than the genre. The rare contemporary critical comments on the novel emphasized its increased probability of events and greater familiarity

of characters, but to the modern reader the only apparent difference often seems to be its comparative brevity. Indeed, in 1706 a popular dictionary defined the novel as "a short Romance." At the same time, the word retained overtones of its more distant origins in the Italian novella and the Spanish novela; the phrase "Intermixt with Eight diverting Novels" was obviously intended to indicate to the peruser of the title page the presence of interpolated short stories. In either sense, "novels" account for only 20 per cent of the following list. Nor has the problem of selection been clarified by the other terms most current in prose fictional tides of the period — history, memoirs, lije, voyage (trip, travels, discovery ), adventures, tale, letters, and account (journal, relation ). Here again the line separating one category from another is nebulous. All, with the exception of tale, were borrowed from purely factual types of publications and used as authenticating devices to avoid the stigma of "a meer Fiction, or Lye." All were applied indiscriminately by authors and booksellers to widely varying fictional works. There seem, moreover, to have been vogues in titles. Thus, memoirs was favored in the first decade of the century; life, adventures, and novel in the 1720's; and history or secret history in the decade immediately preceding Pamela. For this confusion in terminology the great influence of Continental fiction may be partially blamed. Between 1700 and 1739 approximately one-third of all prose fiction appearing for the first time on the English market was translated from the French, and the proportion would undoubtedly be greater if all presumably original, anonymous works could be properly assigned. Certainly, the English author, bookseller, and reader were not critically guided by the scores of books which annually crossed the Channel from French and Dutch presses, bearing the titles of mémoires, annales, histoires, vies, avantures, relations, nouvelles, romans, and contes, which were further qualified as historique, galante, tragique, amoureuse, politique, surprenante, véritable, or any combination of these adjectives. If title pages are almost universally untrustworthy guides, the actual contents of many publications are such a mixture of invention and fact that, without contemporary evidence, it is virtually im-

possible to distinguish between the fictional and the nonfictional. In such cases the compiler must resort to quasi-intuitive judgments based on familiarity with the history of the period, current publishing practices, the works of known authors and literary hacks, the foreign publications which might have been available to the enterprising translators of Grubstreet and other equally elusive factors. To the use of such standards, I willingly confess. To avoid either extreme of omission or inclusion, I have applied certain basic criteria which may seem as debatable as the restriction of the list to the period of 1700-1739 is arbitrary. First, all of the works listed are written in prose. All are, I believe, fictitious — that is, they deal with characters and events which are largely or wholly imaginary, consciously invented by the authors. Numerous possible exceptions, of course, come to mind — the "edited" travel diary, the thinly disguised chronique scandaleuse, the embellished autobiography. I have, however, examined 86 per cent of the 391 works listed, and I am convinced, as the Irish bishop was of Gulliver's Travels, that all the books actually seen are "full of improbable lies." My third standard is borrowed from the French critic cited approvingly by Ε. M. Forster in his Aspects of the Novel: all are "of a certain extent." Some few exceptions have been made — Defoe's Apparition of one Mrs. Veal, for example — but, as a general rule, short character sketches, jest books, topical pamphlets, dialogues, chapbooks, and fictional pieces in periodicals have been omitted. Finally, only works, by native authors or translators, which were first published in England between 1700 and 1739 are included. Thus, although the total annual fictional production is not shown, the list has the advantage of indicating more clearly fictional trends and the degree of original impetus during the period. Later editions, through the year 1739, have also been listed with all possible completeness as a gauge to pre-Richardsonian popularity. Here again, I have made exceptions — in the cases of Robinson Crusoe and Gulliver's Travels. Both of these works, which rank first and second respectively in numbers of editions, involve complicated bibliographical problems which seem to lie outside the scope of a check list which is intended as an aid to students of eighteenth-century literary history rather than as a detailed and definitive bibliography.

INTRODUCTION
The list was initially based upon such sources as Arundell Esdaile's List of English Tales and Prose Romances Printed before 1740, the Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature, and C. N . Greenough's "Catalogue of English Prose Fiction, 1470-1832," a card index at Widener Library, Harvard University. It has since been corrected and expanded by research in various American, English, and French libraries and by use of the specialized lists noted in the bibliography. Within the individual entries, I have usually given, for works examined, the complete title, retaining the original spelling and punctuation; the names of all printers and booksellers listed on the title page; the number of pages of actual text; the format of the volume; the price, whenever available; and the library call number of at least one extant copy. For translations I have given, if possible, the author, the original title, the date of original publication, and the name of the translator. Dubious or unauthenticated titles, which I have been unable to locate, are included in an appendix. In conclusion, I wish to express my appreciation to the directors, curators, and librarians of the British Museum, the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, the Boston Public Library, the New York Public Library, the special collections of the Newberry Library, Harvard University, Yale University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Illinois, the University of Chicago, Columbia University, and Rice Institute, and particularly to Mr. J. H. Merry of the Bodleian Library, Oxford; and Mr. J. C. T . Oates of University Library, Cambridge, for their cordial assistance. To Professors David S. Cowden of Swarthmore College, Marvin Felheim of the University of Michigan, and Richard M. Ludwig of Princeton University, I am much indebted for friendly support and timely aid during various stages of the work. Mrs. E. J. Reece of Urbana, Illinois, has contributed her valuable experience to the difficult task of indexing. And I am deeply grateful to Professor George W . Sherburn for initial guidance and continuing encouragement. WILLIAM HARLIN MCBURNEY University of Illinois Urbana, Illinois
