PREFACE

This classified English-Shuswap vocabulary is based on a standard English 1800-word list attuned to the Salish languages. The Peter de Ridder Press is ready to publish similar vocabularies for other languages. It is hoped that specialists on the latter will make use of this opportunity (there is no copyright on the English list). The spelling can be technical or practical (or both). The present vocabulary is printed in the practical spelling used in May Dixon's and the author's A Shuswap Course (Leiden 1974). It is hoped that the booklet will be of use both to Shuswap Indians interested in their language and to linguists doing comparative work. A conversion table showing how the practical spelling is related to the technical alphabet employed in the author's The Shuswap Language (The Hague 1974) is given below. Items left open in the vocabulary concern words that could not be elicited, either because they have no counterpart in Shuswap or because they are not remembered. Some items not recorded elsewhere are given in the Kinbasket dialect of Athalmer, B.C.; these are marked " K b . " . They are given in the phonetic form characteristic of the other dialects. Thanks are due to all Shuswap Indians who provided information on the language, particularly to Mrs. May Dixon of Canim Lake, Mr. David Johnson of Alkali Lake, Mr. Charles Draney of Deadman's Creek, and Mr. Gus Pascal of Athalmer (all in B.C., Canada). The vocabulary items are arranged in groups as follows : 1-
