This book i s a n a ttempt t o date t he a rt h istory o f s eals i n S yria; b ut i t i s r ather d ifficult t o g ive a p recise opinion o f t hem b ecause t he o rigins a nd a rchaeological l evels o f most o f t hem a re u nknown. T herefore, we c an o nly make t heir c omparisons w ith t hose o f k nown dates. T here m ight b e s ome r igidity i n r endering dates o f t hese s eals t o c enturies. B ut t hese dates r emain a pproximate; t he f act o f which i s c ontroversial. We n otice t hat s ome o f t he a ncient designs i n t he making o f s eals s till p ersisted over t he f ollowing e ras. T his, i n p articular, d etains s trict dating o f s eals. The most o utstanding s eals o f t his book's c ollections a re t hose o f geometric designs. T hey d istinguished by t heir t ypical s tyles o f Northern S yria a nd M esopotamia ( i.e. 1 12 5). We c an h ere, detect a g reat Mesopotamian i nfluence o ver most o f t he s eals c ited i n t his b ook.

I n t he s pring o f 1 985 I was a ppointed C urator o f C uneiform T ablets a nd Cylinder S eals a t A leppo M useum. T he p rocess o f c hecking t hese s eals a ccording t o t heir r ecords l asted l ong months d uring which t ime, I w as c lassifying s eals f ound i n t he A leppo M useum. T o a chieve t his I h ad t o f ill i n s lips f or e ach p articular s eal. F or t his I r elied upon t he M useum r ecords w hich were o riginally i ntended f or T he a ncient E astern a ntiquities. While t aking up t he t ask o f c lassifying t hese s eals, i t s eemed possible t o s ort t hem o ut i nto t wo g roups: A l arge g roup which r eached t he museum b y way o f s cientific excavations done i n d ifferent s ites o f S yria s uch a s M ari, U garit, E bla, C hagar B azar, a nd T ell B rak e tc.; a nd a smaller g roup, o f a round 3 00 s eals, which r eached t he Museum by way o f p urchase a nd c onfiscations o r g ifts. T his s econd g roup i s t he c oncern o f t his b ook whereas t he o ther g roup w ill b e d iscussed i n a f ollowing b ook. A l arge p art o f t his g roup was c onfiscated a t A leppo A irport; t hey w ere d iscovered i n t he h and-bag o f s ome l ady by t he n ame o f M rs. G irardi, i n 1 980, whereas most o f t he o ther p art, r eached t he M useum by w ay o f p urchase b efore t he y ear 1 960.
