INTRODUCTION
With this bibliography we present a new tool for both researchers and practitioners in the field of Islamic law. It supplements the bibliographies published by Joseph Schacht,l John MakdisF and Maribel Fierro,3 and includes Western-language publications which have appeared between 1980 and 1993. The main focus is on the Middle East (including Mghanistan) and North Mrica and with regard to this area we have tried to cover most of the publiShed material. With regard to other areas, such as Mrica south of the Sahara and South and Southeast Asia, the bibliography lists the material that we came across, but we do not claim a full coverage, partly due to the fact that titles published in those areas are difficult to trace. The classical books on Islamic jurisprudence, fiqh, deal with a great variety of topics, ranging from ritual purity and dietaty laws, to the rules of legal procedure. In this bibliography we have excluded publications on ritual ('ibiidiit) and confined ourselves to those parts of the shari"'a that are regarded as law in the Western sense of the word, i.e. the mu'iimaliit and 'uqubiit.
In most countries of the Islamic world both Islamic law and a law of the type used in the Western world is applied. As far as these countries are concerned, we have selected only publications dealing with Islamic law, i.e. as a rule publications on family law, the law of succession and of religious foundations (waqf), and publications dealing with international private law, since the rules of this branch of the law determine the extent of the application of Islamic law when (non-Muslim) nationals of other states are involved. Concerning countries where Islamic law has traditionally been the law of the land, such as Saudi Arabia, Yemen, the United Arab Emirates, or where it has recently been introduced as such, as for instance Iran, we have

included most of the legal publications we have found. This explains for exam pie why the bibliography lists publications on Saudi commercial law but not on Iraqi commercial law. A final and more formal criterion for selection is that we have included neither entries from the Encyc/Qpaedia of Islam (2nd ed.) and other Islamological works of reference nor the relevant sections from the FeridBergmann collection on international family law. 4 We felt that these materials are so easily accessible that they do not need to be included in this bibliography. The most difficult choice we had to make was the one between a selective and analytical bibliography or a bibliography listing all titles we found that fell within the intended scope, without examining the publications themselves. After ample consideration we have chosen for the last option. We felt that the potential users of this bibliography would be served better by an overview of the available literature that is as full and as complete as possible, than by a presentation of a limited number of titles. This meant that we had to lean heavily on second-hand sources such as other bibliographies, references in books, catalogues from libraries and publishers, COROMS, and on-line data. We are painfully aware that this inevitably entails the risk of copying inaccuracies occurring in these sources. In order to limit this we have tried, wherever possible, to check entries against more than one bibliographical source. Another cause of possible errors is found in our method of relying only on the titles for the selection of the material. This may have led us astray in cases where the title does not clearly indicate the subject-matter of the publication. However, we have accepted these risks as a trade-off against the comprehensiveness of this bibliography. The bibliography contains two main parts: one general, containing publications that are not related to regions or countries and one regional, listing the titles of publications dealing with certain countries or areas. The general part is subdivided according to topic, whereas the regional part is subdivided according to country or region. Within these subdivisions the order is alphabetical by author. Publications that fall under different subject or regional headings are listed under each heading. In order to facilitate its use we have added two indices: one on authors, editors and translators and one on subjects. Finally we would like to thank all persons and institutions who have 4 Murad Ferid, Internationales Ehe- und IGndschaftsrecht: begriindet von Alexander Bergmann. 6rh ed. given us assistance and support in producing this bibliography. For their valuable comments we are grateful to Prof. Dr. Remke Kruk, Dr. Alexander H . de Groot, Dr Jan-Michie! Otto and -- last but not least -- Dr. Leon Buskens. In order to prepare this bibliography for publication it was necessary to convert the data to a new data-base. Without the expertise and the personal dedication of Mr. Maarten Hofstede of the Leiden University Library, the difficulties would have been insurmountable. We owe a great debt to Albert Dekker, librarian of the Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law and Administration in Non-Western Countries, to Annemarike Stremmelaar and to Katje Jansen, who have given us much help in tracing and collecting the material. We are further indebted to Dr. Geoffrey Roper of the Bibliographical Unit of the Cambridge University Library for providing us with the latest titles of the Index Islamicus, and to the library staffs of the Oriental Section of the Leiden University Library, of the Department of Languages and Cultures of the Near East (Section Arabic and Islamic Studies) of the University of Amsterdam and of the School of Oriental and African Studies in London for their kind assistance. We also would like to thank those scholars who have been of great assistance by providing us with their lists of publications. This bibliography would not have seen the light without the support of the Van Vollenhoven Institute and the Department of Languages and Cultures of the Islamic Middle East, both of the University of Leiden, who have made it possible for the first author to work on this project, and the Department of Languages and Cultures of the Near East of the University of Amsterdam, which has enabled the second author to prepare this bibliography. For the complementary financial support we are grateful to the Dutch Association for the Study of Islamic and Middle Eastern Law (RIMO). Leiden and Amsterdam, April 1994
