Series Foreword

This series provides reference works in Syriac studies from original books digitized at the ICOR library of The Catholic University of America under the supervision of Monica Blanchard, ICOR's librarian. The project was carried out by Beth Mardutho: The Syriac Institute and Brigham Young University. About 675 books were digitized, most of which will appear in this series. Our aim is to present the volumes as they have been digitized, preserving images of the covers, front matter, and back matter (if any). Marks by patrons, which may shed some light on the history of the library and its users, have been retained. In some cases, even inserts have been digitized and appear here in the location where they were found. The books digitized by Brigham Young University are in color, even when the original text is not. These have been produced here in grayscale for economic reasons. The grayscale images retain original colors in the form of gray shades. The books digitized by Beth Mardutho and black on white. We are grateful to the head librarian at CUA, Adele R. Chwalek, who was kind enough to permit this project. "We are custodians, not owners of this collection," she generously said at a small gathering that celebrated the completion of the project. PRÉFACE. L e manque d'une grammaire syriaque écrite en français jus tifie suffisamment, croyons-iléus, ce livre. Nous nous sommes inspiré, eu le composant, des travaux les plus récents, parmi lesquels ceux de M. l ' A b b é Martin en France et ceux de M. Noël delte en Allemagne occupent le premier rang autant par leur valeur que par leur importance. L a première partie, traitée au point de vue comparatif et historique, a reçu des développements que comporte le sujet; car une connaissance exacte des lois de la phonétique et de l'orthographe est indispensable à celle des formes. On verra par les citations, que nous avons largement mis a contribution les oeuvres grammaticales de Barhébrseus, qui sont le document ancien le plus complet que nous possédions sur la grammaire syriaque. L e s quinze premières feuilles de ce livre étaient tirées, quand parut à L e i p z i g la grammaire syriaque de l'illustre professeur M . Nœldeke. Nous n'avons donc pu la mettre à profit que pour la syntaxe que nous n'avions pas encore achevée. Elle a été pour a

nous d'un grand secours; nous ne pouvions mieux faire que de suivre son excellente méthode, qui en fait une œuvre d | beaucoup supérieure à toutes les grammaires syriaques précédentes. Avons-nous atteint le but que nous poursuivions? Mous savons combien un travail de ce genre prête le flanc,a 1« critique; certaines parties peuvent être facilement attaquées. Nous nous défendrons, cependant, do ne pas avoir adopté la nouvelle théorie, qui envisage la plupart des racines faibles, notamment, celles concaves ou géminées, comme d'anciens bilittères imparfaitement développés

Quelque spécieuse qu'elle soil, cette

théorie ne sera définitivement admissible que lorsque les sérieuses objections qu'elle soulève, auront été écartées. Un volume aussi détaillé que celui-ci, est difficilement abordable à ceux qui commencent l'étude du syriaquef cette raison nous a conduit a mettre, en tête, des tables complètes qui, par elles-mêmes, forment une grammaire élémentaire. l'ouvrage, consulter la table analytique qui se trouve à la fin. Nous avons ajouté une liste des

principaux

termef techniques

et des divisions en usage chez les grammairiens syriaques. Cette liste a un double b u t : faciliter la lecture des traités grammaticaux des auteurs indigènes; fournir quelques données pour l'histoire de la grammaire. Elle est suivie d'un index des mots d'une forme rare ou exceptionnelle, YA
