The well-known Duden
Bildworterbuch here
appears in a bilingual version with Chinese
and English vocabulary printed on the same page. The words are listed not in alphabetical order but by groups relating to a particular subject or field of activity illustrated

on the same or opposite page. The by numbers to the

check the meaning of any Chinese or English word against

situations in domestic
defined in this include typical
and everyday
life,
recreation and sport, flora and fauna,
industry, the arts,
and technology; and care
has been taken to record differences between
and American English. In addition, radical index of Chinese and an alphabetical index of English words which British

enable the reader to find the relevant illustration.
This will be an invaluable supplement any Chinese-English or English-Chinese
to
dictionary and will be useful not only to students, but also to a wide range of
businessmen and translators who work with Chinese commercial concerns.
From
the reviews:
'There are no dictionaries quite like the Duden. Others have illustrations, but the Duden is based on them. The subjects are organized not alphabetically but thematically, to enable reader to grasp, almost
immediately, the entire vocabulary relevant to, for
example, the process of
making or of
offset plate-
infra-red transmission.'

Foreword This Chinese
&
English pictorial dictionary
German
is
based on the
third,
completely revised
Volume 3 of the ten-volume Duden series of monolingual German dictionaries. The Chinese text was jointly produced by Keys Publishing Company Limited and Tung Hua Book Company Limited while the Chinese index was jointly prepared by Assistant Professor Bu
edition of the
Bildwdrterbuch published as
Chun-ying of Hohai University Press and Assistant Professor Li Yu-cai of Nanjing Architecture & Civil Engineering Institute. The English text was produced by the Oxford University Press Dictionary Department, with the assistance of numerous British companies, institutions and technical experts. There are certain kinds of information which can be conveyed more readily and clearly by pictures than by descriptions and explanations, and an illustration will support the simple translation by helping the reader to visualize the object denoted by a given word. This applies both to technical vocabulary sought by the layman and to everyday objects foreign to the general user.
Each double page contains a plate illustrating the vocabulary of a whole subject, names and their correct English equivalents. The arrangement of the text and the presence of a radical index in Chinese and an together with the exact Chinese
index in English allow the dictionary to be used either way: as a Chinese-English or an English-Chinese dictionary. This, together with the wide range of vocabulary, which includes a large proportion of specialized words and technical terms, makes the Oxford-Duden Pictorial Dictionary an indispensable supplement to any Chinese-English or English-Chinese dictionary.
