S E L E C T I O N OF L O C K S In th e selection o f locks th e appearance is n o t th e o n ly th in g to be considered, as a g o o d -lo o k in g case m ay cover p o o r m aterials and im perfect m echanism . The inner w o rk in g p arts are im p o rta n t, as th e actio n and life o f th e lock depend on them . W hen you see V a s y s p r i n g / and | s a r g e n t | on th e case, it is a g u aran tee o f prop er m a terials, careful w o rk m a n sh ip , easy w o rk in g and lo n g w ear. All th e locks listed on th e op posite page c o n ta in th e Sargent E asy Spring fea ture; all are g uaranteed t o stan d th e w e ar and tear o f d a ily use and to do good w ork. T h e different trad e num bers indicate v aria tio n s in size o f case, size o f face, op eratin g fun ctio ns, style o f keys, w e ig h t, etc. W e h ave selected th e locks best suited, in grade and price, for each type of house; b u t if h ig h e r grade locks are w anted w h e re less expensive locks are listed th e y m ay be su b stitu ted . For Front Doors, Locks N os. 6845, 95 ^ vestibule doors Nos. 68453^, 951/^ and 9 6 1 ^ — th e best exam ples o f th e p in -tu m b ler lo ck principle— provide th e m axim u m o f lock security. E very precau tio n ag ainst o p eratio n from outside by in tru ders and every p ro tectiv e feature are included; every device for convenient and easy o p eratio n b y th e o w ner and his fam ily is contained in these locks. Nos. 6745, ^ 745^ j 7 ^^ 7 6 1 ^ are sim ilar in co n stru ctio n to th e above, b u t lig h te r in w e ig h t and less expensive. Sargent C ylinder Locks m ay be exam ined and th e techn ical d etails o f m echa nism and o p eratio n w ill be ex plained in all h ard w are stores w h e re Sargent Locks and H a rd w are are sold.

locks, w h ile N os. 5639 and 5659 are 4 ^ in ch locks. T h e g re ater space betw een K nob and K eyhole on th e 4 ^ inch locks is an advantage. F o r the R im Locks N o. J352.5, sm all Brass Knobs w i t h K ey P lates should be used, th e Key P late being betw een th e K n o b and th e edge o f th e d o o r instead of belo w th e K nob. For Bath or Toilet Doors, th e T u rn K nob, o r E scutcheon w i t h T u rn K nob, is used on th e b a th ro o m side o f th e door, w i t h a Key P late o r E scutcheon to m atch the o th e r in te rio r h ard w are on the h a ll side. N o. 4 6 6 3 ^ has an em ergency key for openin g th e do o r from th e outside in case o f necessity. For Sliding Doors. C up Escutcheons m a tc h in g in design th e o th e r h ard w are can be supplied. For Communicating Doors, th e locks have no keys b u t Escutcheons w i t h T urn K nob, o r separate T urn K nobs, sim ilar to tho se used w i t h B a th R oom Locks, can be furnished. For French Doors and o th e r doors w i t h n a rro w stile. Lever H andles m ay be used on b o th sides or a L ever H andle on one side and a K nob on th e o th er. Lever Handles are needed on th e outside o f doors opening in and on th e inside of doors opening o u t to keep th e h an d a w a y from th e edge o f th e d o o r and prevent its being pinched w h e n th e do o r is opened. F or N os. 5134 and 5059 a sm all n a rro w E scutcheon can be furnished in m ost of th e designs.
