PREFACE Whereas Parts One and Two of the Onomasticon of the Hittite Pantheon 1 were almost exclusively intended for Hittitologists, the present Part Three will be accessible for a wider circle. It consists mainly of glossaries, in which all words and forms mentioned in the Onomasticon have been listed. Each form is explained according to its function in the quotation at issue. The form mekki (of mekki- adj.; "much, many"), for instance, is mentioned as nom.-acc. sg. n. only, whereas outside the quotations given in the Onomasticon the form is also used as an adverb (meaning "greatly, much; very"). Statement of the meaning( s) of a word is based on the context of the quotation in which this word is used. This implies that not in all cases all meanings of a word have been given. In some instances the choice of a meaning has been a subjective one. Where the meaning of a word or an explanation of a form is given, in a few cases other possibilities are offered also. Furthermore, words and forms occur of which meaning or function have not (yet) been established. What distinguishes the glossaries from others is that, where relevant, mention is made of the relation between the use of the word( form) and the deity involved. This applies to genitive collocations (as dMemiiartii nepiiai taknai, "Memisarti of heaven (and) earth", dTelipinupas karpis, Telipinu's anger"), as well as adjectives (as nakkii dTeiipinui, "honoured Telipinu"), and epithets (as d'sulinkattei LUGAL-ui, "king Sulinkatte"). This restriction explains why, e.g. in relation with NINDA.G~.RA only four names of deities are mentioned, whereas this bread is sacrificed to many other deities also. The quotations recorded in the three parts of the Onomasticon in which either a genitive form, an adjective, or an epithet occur in relation to 1 The following reviews of Parts One and Two have been published: M. Popko, BiOr 55 (1998) 855-858; G. Wilhelm, ZA 88 (1998) 294-295; G. Beckman, JBL 118 (1999) 575-576; M. Hutter, Numen 46 (1999) 329-332; R. Lebrun, OLZ 94 (1999) 674-676; G.F del Monte, JAOS 119 (1999) 703-704; . H.A. Hoffner, Jr., JNES 59 (2000) 293-295.

the name of a deity, have, for the convenience of the user, been repeated in the glossaries2 , in a few cases in a slightly more concise form, for practical reasons. The glossaries are followed by a list of personal names. In each case mention is made of the relation between the deity (deities) and the use of the name (e.g. dZawalli (SA) fDanu/Jepa). The same applies to the list of geographical names (e.g. dAla URU Alatarrna). The survey of festivals not only indicates for which deities festivals were celebrated, but where relevant, also in which temple, in which town and in which season. Following publication of Parts One and Two of the Onomasticon of the Hittite Pantheon, new (fragments of) tablets have appeared in KBo XXXI, XL, and XLI, Ku§aklI-Sarissa 1,1, and in Hittite and Human Cuneifonn Tablets from Ortak6y (t;orum), Central Turkey. Names of deities from these editions are mentioned here in a similar way as was done in Parts One and Two. Also, new additions of names of deities and corrections of entries in the previously published volumes have been included here. Less important alterations, as for instance reading UO.KAM instead of UO KAM and m Tutfjalija (a personal name) instead of m Tud/Jalija are not given. 3 Minor printing errors have not been recorded either. Prof. Th.P.I. van den Hout has advised and assisted me frequently also this time. He has contributed to the realization of the Onomasticon to a great extent. For this I am very grateful to him. I wish to thank Or. O. Soysal for his assistance in the compilation of the Hattic glossary. I am indebted to Patricia Radder of Koninklijke Brill N.V. for our agreeable cooperation. Abcoude, february 2001

2 This does not apply to F. Hurrian. Because it has not in all cases been established

what the fonetical values of the (constellations of) cuneiform script used by the Hittites in Hurrian are, the use of broad transcription, as applied in the other glossaries, has been omitted here. Quotations in Hurrian may be found in the appropriate entries in all three parts of the Onomasticon . In some very exceptional cases quotations have been repeated for the sake of clarity. 3 For altered readings one is referred to the appropriate glossary.
