CONTENTS Part One Introduction Divine Names not Sumerographically or Akkadographically written Part Two Divine Names Sumerographically and Akkadographically written Deities not mentioned by a proper name Unclassifiable fragments of Divine Names Hurrian Divine Attributes
INTRODUCTION Fifty years ago E. Laroche published his Recherches sur les noms des dieux hittites 1, in which over six hundred names of deities are dealt with. Due to discoveries of new texts, this number is higher now as is the number of attestations of those we already knew. Furthermore, not only the number of known names of deities has expanded over the past fifty years, the knowledge concerning the nature of many deities has also increased. A great deal of research has been done in the field of Hittite religion, as is evident from V. Haas's Geschichte der hethitischen Religion (1994)2 and M. Popko's Religions of Asia Minor (1995)3. Over the years many other important publications on Hittite religion and deities have appeared, of which only a few can be mentioned here 4 in a chronological order: H. Otten, "Die Religionen des alten Kleinasien", in: Handbuch der Orientalistik (1964)5; E. von Schuler, "Kleinasien. Die Mythologie der Hethiter und Hurriter", in: Worterbuch der Mythologie (1965)6; O.R. Gurney, Some Aspects of Hittite Religion (1977)7 ; F. Pecchioli Daddi and A.M. Polvani, "Le religioni anatoliche", in: Storia delle religioni (1994)8. In the field of iconography mention should be made of: M.N. van Loon, Iconography of Religions XVJ12: Anatolia in the Second Millennium B.C. (1985)9. An overview of all publications in E. Laroche, Recherches sur les noms des dieux hittites, RHA VII/46 (19461947) 7-139. 2 V. Haas, Geschichte der hethitischen Religion. Handbuch der Orientalistik. Erste Abteilung. INTRODUCTION
the field of Hittite religion between 1915 and 1995 is given by V. Soucek and 1. Siegelova in the Systematische Bibliographie der Hethitologie 1915-1995, Teilband 3, 8. Religion (1996). The data concerning the names of deities in Hittite texts have never been classified, however, in a systematic and comprehensive manner. The aim of the present work is to do so and to facilitate access to these data. E. Laroche has done similar work on personal names in Les noms des Hittites (1966)1O, and G.F. del Monte and 1. Tischler on geographical names in the Repertoire Geographique des Textes Cuneiformes 6 en 6/2 {1978, 1992)11. In this Onomasticon of the Hittite Pantheon the (fragments of) names of deities and their particulars have been catalogued with reference to their attestation in the texts. The sources were KBo I through XXX, XXXII through XXXIX, KUB I through LX, VS NF XII, HT, VBoT, IBoT I through IV, ABoT, FHG, AT, FHL, HFAC, HFPC, HKM, lCS (Texts and Fragments), StBoT Bh. 1, ChS Erganzungsheft 1 and all feasible fragments l2 mentioned in secondary literature. Indices of the names of deities in KBo XVI, XVII, XIX through XXX, XXXII through XXXIX, KUB XLIII through LX, VS NF XII and IBoT IV and their reviews have also been consulted, as were those in some other publications. Not included are the names of deities in Sumero-Akkadian texts l3 , (with the exception of names found in texts of treaties), nor those in second-millennium Hieroglyphic-Luwianl4 texts including the rock sanctuary Yazlhkaya. This book consists of two parts. Part One contains the names of deities that are not Sumerographically or Akkadographically written, Part Two contains the names that are Sumerographically and Akkadographically written, followed by deities not mentioned by a proper name. It ends 9 M.N. van Loon, Iconography of Religions XV/12: Anatolia in the Second
Millennium B.C. Leiden 1985. 10 E. Laroche, Les noms des Hittites (Etudes linguistiques 4). Paris 1966. II G.F. del Monte and 1. Tischler, Repertoire Geographique des Textes Cuneiformes. Band 6: Die Orts- und Gewassernamen der hethitischen Texte. Wiesbaden 1978, and G.F. del Monte, Repertoire Geographique des Textes Cuneiformes. Band 6(2 (suppl.). Wiesbaden 1992. 12 Unpublished texts have been referred to according to their excavation number, museum number or otherwise (cf. general abbreviations). 13 This applies to texts that are written in Sumerian and/or Akkadian entirely, for instance as rubricated in CTH chapitre I D, 'Lettres', chapitre XII, 'Litterature sumero-akkadienne' and CTH 833, 'Vieil-assyrien du kfuum Hattus( a)'. 14 For the terms 'Hittite' and 'hieroglyphic Hittite' (=hieroglyphic Luwian) see H.G. Giiterbock, Oriens 10 (1957) 233-239: 'Toward a definition of the term Hittite '.

with the unclassifiable fragments of names. After giving the formes) in which the name( s) in the text( s) is (are) written, a special section marked by an asterisk (*) categorizes information on epithets, temples and shrines, priests and servants, cult places, attributes and feasts. Relevant literature is also added. Almost all names of Hittite deities in the texts are preceded by the determinative d (DINGIR = deity). With some names the determinative may be used occasionally, and omitted at other times. In a few cases the determinative is omitted altogether. Whenever a word without a determinative is mentioned in a series of names of deities, or whenever a comparable text indicates that the word refers to 'something' divine, it has been included in the list of names of deities. Of course, there is room for a certain arbitrariness here, on the whole, however, its seems better to be blamed for including too much than too few. In the (ortho )graphicaVmorphological part of the entry for each name the case-forms and fragments thereof15 found in the text( s) are given in transliteration (for instance dI-na-ra). When the name mentioned in a publication is not given in transliteration l6 , or when the name is located in a lacuna within the text 17 , it is given in broad transcription (dInara). The names in Part One have been arranged in the alphabetical order used in Hittitological lexicography (a, e, b, i, k/g, 1, m, n, p/b, tid, u, ~, z). They may be written in different ways, as for instance in the case of the deity Kammamma, which may be spelled as dKa-a-am-ma-ma, dKa-am-ma-am-ma, dKa-ma-am-ma, or dKam-ma-ma. The alternative forms ensue through doubling of single consonants or the reverse. As an entry, the name is always given in its most extensive form l8 . All these alternatives may thus be found in the entry Kammamma. Other variants are indicated by the use of round brackets, as for instance in ijapantali(ia). Indication of plene writing may be encountered in the entries only in a few instances. In some cases names appearing in (sometimes greatly) different forms, but in fact pertaining to the selfsame deity, are mentioned together in one entry. In the alphabetical classification each of these different names is mentioned separately. The symbol -> indicates the actual entry (as for instance in: ijattabba -> Kattabba).

INTRODUCTION
The entries only give the names of the deities. Gender, origin, and functions of the deities are not given l9 • The designations AIde, Hatt., Hurr., Pal., Luw. (i.e. Akkadian, Hattie, Hurrian, Palaic or Luwian) are indications with reference to the context of the (fragment of the) name or the language in which a (fragment of a) name or a quotation is written. Text references refer to the cuneiform publication in which the tablet or fragment was initially published20 . In the case of joins, two or more texts are only mentioned if the signs of a name, a word, or a phrase are written on both or all parts of such a join. Whenever a reference contains additional information on the deity in question, the reference is followed by an asterisk (*) referring to the second part of the entry. In the second part of the entry the particulars of the deity are given. This information is generally given in broad transcription. Excerpts from the text are rendered in transliteration. This also applies to all Hattie and Hurrian words and quotations. The additional information 21 is given according to the following pattern: Family relations ON22 son/daughter of deity ... ON son/daughter ON brother/sister ON grandchild ON descendant ON father/mother of deity ... ON father/mother Other connections ON of deity ... deity ... (of) ON ON of the deities the deities of ON the loved one of ON 19 In many cases further information may be obtained from the literature mentioned at the end of the entry. Information may also be found in the second section of the entry marked by an asterisk (*). 20 Indications of uncertainty concerning the determination of obv .frev., column and line numbers have been omitted. 21 Only those details are given that appear in a direct connection with the (name of the) deity in the text. Other particulars, such as (types of) offerings and attributes mentioned at other locations in the text, have been omitted. 22 ON = divine name.

The sequence of languages is as follows: HittiteSumerian-Akkadian-Hattic-Hurrian-Palaic-Luwian. For the sake of readability, minor imperfections of signs have not been indicated. In the event of a lacuna in the text, additions are given in broad transcription. Occasionally there may be valid reasons for the use of translitera tion 25 . those cases where the name of the deity is followed by Sumerian words, no account has been taken of the fact that either an apposition or a genitive may be involved. 24 The spelling of the geographical names has generally been adopted from the notation used in the Repertoire Geograpbique des Textes Cuneiformes (6 and 6(1.). 25 For instance where an (almost) identical wording is found in the same text, or on the basis of a duplicate. Tentative restorations have been adopted only in a few cases. 23 In

INTRODUCTION
The aim of the present Onomasticon is to realize a compilation of locations as comprehensive as possible. An exhaustive survey, however, can only be given when all known texts will have been published. Also, of course, it is not impossible that I may have overlooked a text that actually has already been published. Furthermore, no claim to exhaustiveness is made for the bibliographies at the end of the entries. Some years ago Prof. Th.P.J. van den Hout encouraged me to publish the data I had collected concerning the names of deities. He has advised and assisted me in the realization of this book ever since. For this I am most grateful to him. I am much obliged to Prof. Ph.H.J. Houwink ten Cate, my tutor, Dr. I. Wegner and Prof. V. Haas for the observations they were willing to share with me after reading the manuscript. I thank Prof. K.R. Veenhof for his permission to have this book incorporated into the Handbuch der Orientalistik. Abcoude, October 1997
