This Book Just as without knowing the alphabet it is impossible to know the language, so, without fully understanding the words used in the subject of Maths, we cannot expect the learner to master the subject. During the process of learning it is important to emphasise an understanding of the concepts of words. Words like “house”, “apple” are understood by the student. There is no need to memorise them. However, for words like “divisor”, “ascending”, “geometry”, the same clarity in understanding may not exist. This book helps to provide that clarity. It helps to build a strong foundation of the subject. It forms part of the resources needed by teachers, parents and students to put the child on the ladder of competence. We believe every student has the potential to master a subject and to be good in all subjects, not in just one or two. Our series of books aims to build a strong foundation of the subject for the learner. It is the duty of teachers and parents to provide the tools, guidance and an environment that enables children to reach their full potential. If you wish for the child to become an independent learner and excel in Maths, then this book belongs in your special tool-kit.

Run from A to B.

A.

The place where we should start. The starting point.

That means that we should start running from A.

to Used to show the end of something. The end or finish point.

missing Something that is lost. Anything which is not there that should be there.

Read pages 10 to 22. This means we should stop reading at page 22. Page 21

compare To see or say how things are different or the same.

The colours of the balloons are different.

The apple and pear are a different shape.

The colours of the pencils are the same but the sizes are different.

The balls have a different colour and a different shape.

comparison The differences in two or more things or how they are the same.

Comparison between a circle and a square. This means that we need to find the difference in a circle and a square and how they are the same.

Answer: Both a circle and a square are shapes. A circle is round and a square is not. A square has sides and a circle does not.

skip

If you jump from the third step to the fifth step, then you skip the fourth step.

To leave something or not do something and go ahead.

If you eat 1 banana a day and 5 in one week, then you can skip Tuesday and Friday.

table A list of numbers or things known to be true, that are placed in some order. Example: At the start of this book we have a table of contents which tells us the topics in order of page number.

forward

The boy is going forward.

The man on his bike is going forward.

To go ahead. To move ahead. To move in front of you.

Example: Forward from 20 is 21, 22, 23, 24,…

backward To go back. To move back.

The man going from A to B is moving forward. Then going from B to A he is going backward.

ascending order To put or go from the smallest to the largest number.

Arrange in ascending order: 6, 11, 13, 15, 8, 3, 9, 5, 12

This means we should write the smallest number first and then continue to the largest number. 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 15

descending order To put or go from the largest to the smallest number.

Arrange in descending order: 13, 7, 4, 8, 3, 10, 9, 12

This means we should write the largest number first and then continue to the smallest number. 13, 12, 10, 9, 8, 7, 4, 3

compare numbers To see or say how numbers are different or the same.

Compare 5 and 3

1st, 2nd, 3rd - first, second, third are ordinal numbers. 10th ,22nd, 53rd are ordinal numbers. Arif wanted the third (3rd) book on the bookshelf. 3rd is an ordinal number.

cardinal number A number showing quantity.

skipping numbers Counting forwards or backwards by a number other than 1.

Example: 1, 2, 3 - One, two three are cardinal numbers.

I see 3 ducks. The cardinal number is 3 in the above sentence.

Can you count forward by skipping 2? Answer: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22

Can you count backward by skipping 5, starting from 80 ending on 45. Answer: 80, 75, 70, 65, 60, 55, 50, 45.

even numbers Numbers that can be divided exactly by two.

multiplication tables A list of numbers that shows you the results of multiplying one number with a other numbers in sequence. Usually from 1 to 12.

forward counting To say numbers in ascending order. To say numbers by adding 1 to each number.

Example: Backward counting from 11.

Example: if we need to write 250 in words in English, then we would write:

digit A number that can be from 0 to 9. It can be part of a number.

equation In Maths, an equation says that two things are the same by using an equal (=) sign.

Sizes size How large or small something is.

object A thing that you can see and touch.

height How far something is from the bottom to the top. The distance of something from bottom to top.
