In memoriam to my Masters Adam Lysakowski and Helena Hleb-Koszañska

To my father Why this monumental "International Bibliography of Bibliographies in Library and Information Science and Related Fields"? During his long professional experience Dr. Sawoniak, my father, noticed the lack of a reference tool on an international level. He decided then to undertake an international, multilingual compilation useful for various types of professionals world wide. In the introduction to Ossolineum edition published in 1985, he explains his decision in these terms: "So far the library and information science has not been provided with a retrospective international guide of bibliographies. Some bibliographies exist in 'general bibliographies of bibliographies', such as T. Besterman's: A world bibliography of bibliographies (4 ed. Lausanne 1965-1966), and its continuation; A. F. Toomey 's: A world bibliography of bibliographies 1964-1974 (Totowa 1977), the current bibliography 'Bibliographische Berichte' (published in 1974 as a supplement to the 'Zeitschrift für Bibliothekswesen und Bibliographie'). National current and retrospective bibliographies of bibliographies published in some countries contain information about bibliographies in library and information science. However, the information obtained from the above mentioned publications is incomplete. The present bibliography with a complete coverage of the fields of 'bibliology ' in the post World War II period, will fill up a gap in information guides. "

This monumental task was made possible thanks to the aim clearly defined in Dr. Sawoniak's mind since the beginning, the methodical approach and work during several years. As a librarian and bibliographer believing in his mission, he sacrificed more than half of his life to promote methods, standards and common sense in the practice of librarianship..* Various sources explored for the compilation (reference books, surveys, the state of art research, etc) and the fields covered, reveal the potential richness of the bibliography and its international coverage. Some librarians and archivists were defined in thepast as "niestrudzony siewca", "bibliomaniac" in the right sense of the word. These attributes could also describe the personality of my father and the mission he undertook. Dr. Sawoniak dedicated his work to his professors, Adam Lysakowski and Helena HlebKoszanska, eminent Polish librarians. In my turn, I would like to add my personal dedication in the present Volume I to my father as my professor. I am very honored that my father entrusted me with the task of editing the present volume that you have in your hand today, besides being particularly happy to finish this work in the year 2002, on the 90th birthday of my father. Foreword It is a great pleasure and an honor to write a preface to the monumental and unique work a labor of love by the revered bibliographic scholar Dr. Henryk Sawoniak and his daughter Maria Witt. This part of the giant undertaking is based on the 1985 edition published in Poland by Ossolineum, but has been completely re-edited, with more than 3000 new entries supplied by Mme. Witt. Though some bibliographies of bibliographies in this field exist in scattered form in more general works, this is the first such compendium to be devoted solely to library and information science and, most significantly, related fields. The boundaries of library and information science are often elastic enough, but in recent decades they have encompassed the many and complex overlaps between librarianship and information science (themselves bound in a complex relationship) and other disciplines and fields such as computer science and archival practice. As one can imagine, many things have changed in the seventeen years between the first and second versions of Volume 1, not least in the delineation of the fields under discussion. Therefore, the additional entries add weight and value to an already major achievement. We can only speculate admiringly about the years of labor involved in assembling such a comprehensive bibliography, but there is

much more to admire about this work. The classification of topics is admirably conceived and implemented with great care and rigor. The detailed sub-arrangements under each major topic are carried out with Ranganathanlike care and attention to detail. The entries themselves obey standard canons of citation and, most helpfully, contain many helpful notes that clarify the scope and antecedents of each work cited. The indexes (of subjects, authors, personal names, titles, and places) provide an essential complement to the detailed classification and easy access to the searcher. Perhaps the most admirable aspect of this work is the sweep of its coverage. Not only are all aspects of library and information and related studies covered, but also the entire world is covered. This makes the compilation not only a bibliographic but also a linguistic tour de force. Few works can be said to be enduring monuments of scholarship, but Henryk Sawoniak and Maria Witt have created one such in this and its companion volume covering 19791990. Michael Gorman Dean of Library Services California State University, Fresno July 2002

XXIII

Introduction It is a great pleasure for me to present you with the complementary part of Volume II (published in 1999: 1979 - 1990) of the Bibliography of Bibliographies in LIS, Volume I, covering the period 1945 - 1978. The following scope, themes and selection criteria are, in general, current for both volumes of the Bibliography: Purpose and target

readership

The intention was to publish an exhaustive list of bibliographies pertinent to library, information sciences and archive professionals in the widest sense of those terms as well as to researchers and practitioners, to teachers and students in these fields, to publishers and booksellers. Apart from bibliographies in their strictest sense the following are also included: a) references containing lists of cited literature attached to monographs or articles in periodicals; b) references containing critical literature surveys. With regard to both the subject matters covered and the works cited, the scope of the work is essentially international. The Bibliography covers the specified decade on a global scale and includes both up-to-date and historical documents, these being chieftly monography in whole or in part, and also published in periodicals. Themes represented

in the

Bibliography

The titles to be found in the Bibliography not only deal with library and information science but àlso with related fields such as archiving, the book trade, publishing, the history of books, copyright law, bibliophily, the history of paper, reading, bibliometrics, copying techniques and many others. Almost all references are published documents but the author included also some unpublished bibliographies. Further information in this field can be found in sources such as "Dissertation abstracts international" or Reynolds' "Guide to theses and dissertations", etc.

Selection

and collection

criteria

In addition to the content criterion, publishing and physical format, a decisive criterion in the choice of bibliographies was the number of references. However, less important references were also included, specially for the fields which did not contained important number of references (e.g. "Conservation of colour photographic records" or "Unpublished studies of technical services time and costs"). The "Sources used for compilation" reflect the variety of materials explored. Many references collected for this Bibliography went through a personal verification. Nevertheless a few of them have been mentioned as found in secondary sources. Thus the user may see differences amoung bibliographic descriptions. Lists of "Sources used for the compilation" and "Periodicals from which entries were selected" provided in Volume I are based upon published ones in Ossolineum book. Reference

layout

Each reference provides bibliographical details (author, title, publisher, and where it is merely a component part, title of main document, physical particulars, series) and notes including reviews. The notes, which represent a mayor part of the references (and of the Bibliography) are intended to provide the user with maximum clarification and information not found in the descriptive part of the bibliographic record. Specialities

of Volume I

The user will find, however, some differences due to the specificity of the historical period covered by Volume I (1945-1978) and methods used by Professor Sawoniak before 1985 when Ossolineum had published 70 % of the materials contained in the present volume. 1 1

In an interview that Dr. Henryk Sawoniak did for the Polish LIS serial "Przegl^d Biblioteczny" in 2000 (n° 4), the Author talked in detail about some specific topics and explained the differences.

XXV

Introduction Moreover, the present Volume I is the result of a very complete and complex reorganization, renumbering of references and adaptation of the book on which it's based. 2 Some 3,000 items were added to the original references, items collected after 1985 when the book was published in Poland (new items were occasionally searched and collected up to 1995). The statistical data of the original 1985 edition are summarized in a separate table by type of items and by country. This introduction is focused on major information which helps to discover the differences between the two volumes. This brief explanation on the aim and process of editorial work will help to get a better grasp of the monumental task undertaken by Professor Sawoniak. Several points specific to the editing work with consequences for the use of the Bibliography: a) classification - general In the original Ossolineum edition there are 44 classes in one part, and the present Saur edition contains 61 classes in two parts: Part I "General" with 9 classes covering the whole field of LIS, and Part II with 52 particular fields and topics. The aim of editorial work was to find matches, to reorganize classes and subclasses according to the classification already used in Volume II. b) computer science "The inclusion of computer science seems justified, because its various aspects are covered by many current bibliographies, such as 'Information Science Abstracts', 'Referativnyj zurrtal' (59: Informatika), 'Bulletin Signalétique' (101: Sciences de l'Information), 'Annual Review of Information Science and Technology'. 2

In 1987 Dr. Sawoniak received the A. Lysakowski's award and medal from Polish Librarians Association (the SBP) for the book which was the basis of the present Volume I: "Miedzynarodowa bibliografia bibliografii ζ zakresu informacji naukowej i dziedzin pokrewnych", Wroclaw: Ossolineum 1985. It was designated the best book of the year by the SBP.

XXVI

However, in the present 'Bibliography' the computer science bibliographies are registered in a very selective manner: the priority is given to general bibliographies, computer application in some fields, such as human sciences, law, bio-medical sciences and special problems." As the field of computer science was relatively new for the period covered by Volume I (at least for the first portion of this period), its representativeness is more modest compared to Volume II. The user of Volume I will notice the shortness of some chapters (e.g. 18.3. Social implications of computers. Humancomputer interaction: 10 refs in vol. I, 20 refs in Vol. II; 26. Information technology: this chapter is reduced in Vol. I to seven subdivisions, 114 refs., comparing to fifteen subdivisions and 424 refs. in Vol. II; 44.3. Automatic publishing techniques: 14 refs. Vol. I, where such topics as electronic publishing or desktop publishing are not specified, and 40 refs. in Vol. II; etc.). On the other hand, it is not astonishing that in the introduction to Volume II (p. XXV) there is a list of headings which have been developed or adapted in the bibliography for the period 1979-1990 due to the increasing number of computerized libraries in the world. In some cases it was difficult to find suitable matches for concepts and therefore explanation or "see" notes were provided (e.g. 32. Microcomputers. Personal computers; 34. Online services).

c) The reason why archiving is quite well represented in the Bibliography is that numerous LIS bibliographies and professional journals published after the World War II included this topic (e.g. FID list "Library, documentation and archives journals", " U N E S C O Journal of Information Science, Librarianship and Archives Administration").

d) period coverage The period 1945-1990 covered by Volume I and Volume II is now brought together (ca. 20,000 items). The limit of 1945 was originally chosen because "bibliographies published before 1945 are of minor importance for modern librarianship, and a great many of them

Introduction are registered in Besterman's work.3 The 'Bibliography ' [Volume I] contains items which appeared till 1978, with the exception of the reviews published after 1978 but concerned with items registered in the 'Bibliography'. " e) Short descriptions present in the original Ossolineum edition were generally maintained without "see" note. Full descriptions can be found through the index. f) Notes originally in Polish (Ossolineum edition) were translated into English. This process concerned the substantial notes which were translated and simplified. In many cases the information about the arrangement, the type of indexes of the item described was omitted. The essential information on the contents in original language (complete or selective), on successive or previous editions, title changes, the availability via EDRS (ERIC Document Reproduction Service) were maintained. Selected reviews of bibliographies were not omitted either, since they represent a real "added value" of the main descriptions, in particular the critical ones. They may be helpful in the right choice and evaluation of particular bibliographies and should be completed by abstracts from sources such as LISA or ISA. In many new items supplemented to the original edition of the present Bibliography of Bibliographies the reviews were also noted. The number of reviews cited in Volume I is evaluated to more than 1,000 (almost 50 % less than Volume II). g) Index The Ossolineum edition was intended to enrich the international user. Title, table of contents, introduction and subject index were also in English. However the table of contents reflected the alphabetical order of classes in Polish, and the subject index in English did not include proper names of corporate bodies. This was done for the present edition. 3

Besterman's Bibliography was one of the models to Dr. Sawoniak's Bibliography: Besterman, Theodore: A world bibliography of bibliographies and of bibliographical catalogues, calendars, abstracts, digests, indexes, and the like. London 1939-1940.

In general the Subject index is reproduced from the original edition, meaning it covers 70 % of the items registered in Volume I. That means, it is not covering new items added. For the lacking portion, the user will go straight to classification scheme, browse neighbor items, or will find another methods. Besides, the subject index can be a valuable help for searching. The references were re-numbered automatically after they were re-classified according to the new classification scheme. The Geographical index is also an addition compared to the original edition where geographical headings were found in the Subject index in Polish. For this type of entry it can also be referred to the subdivision "particular countries" which exists in many chapters. Regarding geographical headings and the names of countries one particularity has to be underlined. Both Volume I and II of the present Bibliography reflect the political reality existing for the period before 1989. That's why, for example, headings for former Soviet Republics are under USSR, and there are separate headings for Germany, GDR (German Democratic Republics), FRG (Federal Republics of Germany), and West Berlin. The Author and Title index in Volume I were processed automatically by the publisher. The present Volume does not contain a personal name index. However entries for individuel names can be found in chapters such as 11.38 "Personal bibliographies in LIS" and II.4.6 "Artists of the book". h) Some final words about editing of supplementary items: For the addition of supplementary multilingual manuscript files collected by Dr. Sawoniak priorities were defined and the work progress was made. However, incompleteness of descriptions were checked by using international catalogues, in particular the OCLC (only 10 % of supplemented items for books were not found in the OCLC World Cat., representing only about 1,5 % of the Volume). When descriptions were sufficient for identification they were copied from the original files. XXVII

Introduction Dr. Sawoniak wondered if the incompleteness of newly registered items for books and articles would not bother the users, but consulting them one by one, the book would never get published. Even if some descriptions are very short and seem less valuable, the materials collected were not lost; they constitute precious documentation on the development of bibliographies in general and the Bibliography as a science for the given period. The new references were of course checked with the main part in Ossolineum edition in order to avoid repetition of the information, but sometimes the same items with full description were duplicated in different classes (if it was appropriate, depending on the subject). Conclusions In such a reference tool mistakes and errors cannot be avoided. All mistakes noticed after

the publication by Ossolineum in 1985 (which were quite numerous) have been corrected in the present Volume I. Hopefully, the remaining mistakes won't be vital for the identification of bibliographies listed. One must keep in mind that both Volumes (I and II) were elaborated according to a traditional process, even if in the final automatic processing method helped a lot. As Dr. Sawoniak said in his last interview 4 , this International Bibliography of Bibliographies..., published at the turn of the century, is probably the last one processed in this way. Dr. Sawoniak presented this work as his "swan song": "Finis coronat opus". The author and editor hope that this International Bibliography of Bibliographies... will be helpful for professionals using it all over the world. Comments and suggestions would be most welcome.

Notes on use Text reproducing basic principles, used for Volume II (1979-1990) of the Bibliography, and adapted to the present Volume I (¡945-1978).* A. Content This Volume I of the Bibliography is made up of two parts, like the Volume II (not to be confused with its separate physical items), followed by two annexes and the indexes. Part I "General" consists of 925 references arranged into 9 chapters, occasionally subdivided according to subject matter or country. It contains general bibliographies of bibliographies with international coverage, retrospective and current bibliographies in LIS, general and national LIS bibliographies, general bibliographies covering bibliographies of different formats (bibliographies of library and information science serials, collective personal bibliographies, still unpublished bibliographies and bibliographies in progress, bibliographies of the movies, and the other A/V materials dealing with LIS).

Part II "Particular disciplines and topics" is a list of 8,167 references organized into 52 chapters which are arranged in alphabetical order and may be seen as falling into four groups:

Each chapter is subdivided according to various criteria: subject matter, chronology (either of content or of publication), titles of periodicals, names of institutions, etc. Annex I entitled "Library and Information Science Literature" is divided into chapters dealing with organization of bibliographical documentation, bibliographical services, databases, LIS libraries and collections. Annex II contains Polish bibliological bibliographies published between the end of 19th century and 1945. More than 70 references are subdivided into several topics by alphabetical order: archival science; art of the book; book science; book trade and publishing; librarianship; the press; etc B. Classification and arrangement* The items are arranged according to a topic classification developed especially for this Bibliography and adapted to the collected references. Thus the subject arrangement bears many elements of the systematic, thematic, chronological sequence (either of content or of publication) and others: countries, titles of periodicals, names of institutions etc.

a) fields related to information science such as bibliophily, the book trade, publication problems; b) associated fields: archiving, communication sciences, computing, information technology; c) the tasks and working practices of librarians: access to and management techniques for collections in libraries, cataloguing, conservation, reference services, etc. d) types of documents and collections: children's literature, manuscripts, specialized collections, etc.

For particularities related to the editing work of Volume I please refer to the Introduction in the present volume, especially to the paragraphs concerning the classification, the notes, and the indexes.

The subdivisions within each chapter are differentiated by special types: bold, italic etc. In many cases the references of the last degree subdivisions are arranged by alphabetical author and title order. All entries are assigned Arabic numbers in numerical sequence (with separate numeration for the Annex) in order to provide a direct method of locating each item through the indexes. Duplication There are about 450 short references wich dublicate the full ones found in different paragraphs, e.g. the title "Copyright and photocoXXXII

pying" is situated in II. 19.2. (Copyright. Specific topics) and in 11.47. (Reprography); the title "Computers and the UDC" - in II.14.3.6. (Classification. UDC) and in II.50.2. (Subject analysis. Automation); the title "School libraries and children's reading" in 28.1.11.1. (School libraries. General) and in 45.3.1. (Reading. Children and young people).

C. Structure of an entry Examples of some of the references with explanations of its elements: Examples of monographs: ref. No 3837, 3838 (Vol II) Example of a part of a book: ref. No 5881 (Vol II) Example of a part of a serial: ref. No 5902 (Vol II) See the samples below on pages XXXVXXXVII.

C. 1 Bibliographic description principles and elements Basically, the bibliographic description follows the ISO standards, as it has done in the previous work published by Ossolineum: standards on bibliographical references, abbreviations of typical words in titles of periodicals, abbreviations of typical words in bibliographical references, transliteration of Slavic Cyrillic characters. Only some minor changes have been introduced in the Bibliography aiming at a simplicity and readability for the international user. The bibliographic description taken from secondary sources and not checked against the original follows the elements present in each source. The missing data have not been added (e.g. the missing initial articles (The, La etc.) for the titles taken from Library Literature or the missing place of publication, pagination etc.). If some descriptions seemed incomplete and could not be verified, we have provided the information on the source. The description of the multivolume monographs has various solutions. Information on the number of volumes are sometimes given

Notes on use in the main part of the description, in other cases volumes are listed as individual parts of annotations with detailed data, such as titles, titles of chapters, pagination, number of items. New editions, changes in the proper title, etc. Each new edition of the work has its own description where the title differs significantly from preceding editions; otherwise it is mentioned in a note. For the cumulative indexes of some current bibliographies, specific reference will also be found: e.g. "Library and Information Science Abstracts: cumulative index", 1969 - 1973 (in Part I, 2.1). Cross references At the beginning of some chapters or subchapters, general "see also" indications have been introduced. They function as links between disciplines or subjects or refer to other formats: E.g. in Chapter 1 (Part II): Access to library resources and services (1.1. General), two "see also" references have been given: "See also: 45.4. Library assistance to readers; 52. Use and users of library and information services". E.g. in Chapter 9 (Part II): Bibliophily. Book collecting (9.1. General), the following references have been given: "See also: 22. History of the book (22.4. Private libraries; 22.6. Bookbinding history). Indexes to individual periodicals see: 37. Periodicals in LIS, e.g. 'Antikvar', 'Aus dem Antiquariat', 'Book collector', 'Le livre et l'estampe', etc. Bibliographies concerning individual book collectors see: 38. Personal bibliographies in LIS (passim)." E.g. in Chapter 28.1.11.1.: "Reading habits of school children see 45.3.1. Specific groups of readers. Children; Indexes to individual periodicals see 37., e.g. 'School libraries'." If the description relates only to a part of the monograph, the relevant note is given in the annotation. Collected works published separately, or as a special issue of a serial (e.g. Library Trends) generally have the full description with a note of the number of papers.

In the description of the more important current bibliographies information has been given dealing with individual annuals, e.g. "Annual Review of Information Science and Technology", "Bulletin Signalétique", "LISA" etc. (Part I, 2.1.). C. 2 Some details on the elements of the bibliographical description Author The author's first name is given in full, the middle names generally in initials, e.g. Gebers, Jane L.; Bennet, R[ichard] J. Compound first names have been kept in full, e.g. Martin, Henri-Jean. In Russian, Byelorussian and Ukrainian names, the patronymic has, normally, only been given in initials, e.g. Klepikov, Sokrat A. (not as Klepikov, Sokrat Aleksandrovic in Part II, 36.2). Title The title is given in the original language and is translated in many cases, as far as possible, in a footnote for lesser-known languages. The information on abstracts in foreign languages is provided, if appropriate (Rés., Zsfg.). Quotation in the description of an article in the serial. The description of the sequence of volume and issue numbers contains: abbreviated serial title, year, volume, issue number or designation, pages. E.g.: "Arch. Bibl. Belg. 1967 t. 38 n° 3/4 p. 280-287"; "Acad. Bibl. Italia 1952 An. 20 n° 5 p. 248"; "Vopr. Bibliografoved. 1978 [vyp. 3] p. 110-141]" etc. The printing date has been provided, if needed, e.g. "Rocz. Bibl. 1978, printed ¡980 R.22, z.1-2 p.1-10". Number of items This data element has been given at the end of the description in square brackets, according to the document examined at hand or based on secondary information (e.g. from the review). Pagination Pages have been given the way they are: Roman or Arabic numbers. Unnumbered pages before the pagination of the main body of the very publication have been given in the Bibliography in square brackets, e.g.: "[6], 113 p.". But unnumbered pages following the pagination of the main body have been normally added to it, e.g.: "238 p." not "234, [4] p.". XXXIII

Notes on use Notes In them may be found information about coauthors, title information, English translations of titles in languages which are not widely used, details on content (the table of contents), on the language, on the period covered, the type of publication, and frequency of publication, etc. The notes also indicate the titles of related publications such as reprints, translations, previous and subsequent editions, etc. Reviews The description of a review is situated at the end of the item and contains the reviewer's name and the serial identification (serial title and the issue). The reviews' citations are arranged by chronological order of publication date or by alphabetical order of reviewer's name. The title of a periodical is given in abbreviated form, following the ISO principles.

20 Jahre Buchkunst; 100 books on American journalism; 1000 Titel; 3. The detailed Subject index helps the user to find information on bibliographies in a specific field or topic. In addition, the subject index provides both headings of the contents and also detailed topics in various chapters, those that have separate bibliographies also contain more specific contents annotations of individual items, e.g. headings: Antiquity - illumination Photographs - preservation 4. The Geographical index lists names of regions, countries, places specified by qualifiers and descriptors

D. Indexes and their order*

£ . Languages, transliteration

The content of each index is in alphabetical order of Latin characters. The diacritics are generally printed without consideration to the alphabetical arrangement: they are equivalent to any other letter of the alphabet.

The majority of bibliographies we have included were produced in European languages with latin caracters. For some Oriental languages, we have chosen the variant which uses the Roman alphabet (e.g. Turkish, see II.29.3. Librarianship. Turkey, 11.31.3.2. Illuminated manuscripts by provenance - Turkish).

1. The Author index lists authors, co-authors, editors of collected works and serials, translators, etc. The authors of reviews have been excluded. 2. The Title index lists titles of individual separate works, or of those with authors' headings (together with parallel titles in other languages), serials' titles as individual entries (together with parallel titles in other languages). As a rule the titles of fragments or of individual works (with some important exceptions though) have been excluded. Titles beginning with numbers are listed at the beginning of the Index, according to the numerical order, e.g.:

XXXIV

The proper title is given in the original language. Titles in Cyrillic alphabets have been transliterated into Roman letters following the ISO standard. For languages which are not widely used the proper title is given in English in a note. Notes and comments are in English.
