THE

INTRODUCTION —

|__ Iuave aways BEEN IN LOVE WITH THE NATURAL

WORLD. SINCE MY FIRST WONDERING DISCOVERIES AS A CHILD GROWING UP IN ILLINOIS TO MY CHOICES OF HABITAT IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS OF COLORADO AND THE MAGNIFICENT COAST OF MAINE, MY LIFE HAS BEEN DRIVEN BY THE NEED TO BE SURROUNDED AND IMMERSED IN THE BEAUTY OF NATURE. AS MUCH AS MUSIC, IT HAS BEEN THE CENTRAL FOCUS OF MY EXISTENCE —HAS ALWAYS PROVIDED ME SOLACE, HEALING, INSPIRATION. IN THE SILENT FOREST I FIND MY FAITH. ON THE BOUNDLESS OCEAN | AM CONTINUALLY RENEWED. MY TRAVELS HAVE TAKEN ME TO MANY CORNERS OF THIS FASCINATING PLANET BUT ALWAYS AT THE CORE OF MY APPRECIATION LIES THE SPECIAL FEELING THAT STILL LIVES IN MY DEEPEST SELF — THE LOVE OF MY NATIVE ILLINOIS. HER RIVERS AND LAKES, WOODS AND BACKLANDS, PRAIRIES AND CORNFIELDS — ALL ARE THE PLACES WHERE | FOUND AND EMBRACED MAGIC. I CAN STILL TASTE AND SMELL THE GLORIOUS CHANGING

OF HER SEASONS — FERTILE, BLACK SPRINGTIME;

PREFACE

| _Inrue twitch oF A COLD WINTER MORNING ALONG THE BLUFFS

OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER, BALD EAGLES LEAVE THE TREES WHERE THEY HAVE SPENT THE NIGHT TO SEARCH FOR FISH. THEY HAVE NOT EATEN IN TWELVE HOURS, AND AT A TEMPERATURE OF ONLY EIGHT DEGREES, THEIR NEED FOR FISH IS VITAL. THE EAGLES TRAVERSE THE RIVER, WATCHING FOR THE FIRST CHANCE TO DIVE TO THE WATER. AS THE COLOR IN THE SKY INTENSIFIES, A LONE EAGLE SOARS SWIFTLY ACROSS THE RED SUNRISE, ALLOWING ME TO GET THE PHOTOGRAPH I AM LOOKING FOR. ANOTHER EAGLE FLIES CLOSE OVERHEAD, HIS EYES ON ME; | CAN SENSE THE PRESENCE OF POWER AND AN ANCIENT WISDOM. ON A NORTHERN ILLINOIS SAND PRAIRIE IN JUNE, STORMS THUNDER ACROSS THE PLAINS IN THE EARLY MORNING. THE FLOWERS AND PRAIRIE PLANTS ARE ENCHANTING, EXHIBITING AN AMAZING ARRAY OF VARIETY AND COLOR. THE BUTTERFLIES AND NATIVE BIRDS THAT DEPEND ON THIS OASIS ADD SPIRIT TO ALREADY INDESCRIBABLE BEAUTY. THEY HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF THIS PLACE THAT WE WILL NEVER KNOW. AFTER HOURS OF WAITING FOR THE WIND TO CALM LONG ENOUGH FOR AN OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE AN EXPOSURE WITH THE VIEW CAMERA, | AM FULLY CONTENT IN THIS PLACE.
