History
PREFACE T h e texts in this book were written some years ago for intermediate Russian language courses which I was then teaching at Columbia University. These materials have been in use since that time in mimeographed form at Columbia and in a few other colleges and universities. For the present edition, I have revised quite extensively the texts and the vocabularies placed at the end of each chapter. Also, since words are given in these chapter vocabularies only on their first occurrence and in the order of their occurrence, it seemed advisable to append a vocabulary in which one may find all the translations given in the chapter vocabularies arranged in alphabetical order. Finally, some material has been added for classroom work or homework. One will find, following each chapter, a short section of Exercises, consisting mainly of questions in Russian on the content of the chapter, and of English sentences for translation into Russian based on the vocabulary of the chapter. My purpose in writing this text was to provide the student with reading material on an adult level in content, yet accessible in the second year of a Russian language program (or second semester of an intensive course, as was the case at Columbia). T h e text begins with a brief survey of the geographical area which is now occupied by the Soviet Union, and then proceeds to tell the story of the peoples who have inhabited it from the earliest times- up to the formation of the Moscow monarchy in the fifteenth century. T h e book deals, then, with rather remote times. Having begun this history at the beginning, I had to stop rather early, the alternative, a rather unsatisfactory one, being to compress the material into a mere inventory of facts. Secondly, the epoch presented, remote as it may be, is most certainly relevant for an understanding of later developments. Lastly, topical material of this type is very useful in building a basic vocabulary sufficient for the understanding of original (nonedited) Russian texts in the fields of history and the social
PREFACE
TL
and political sciences. T h e vocabulary used in this text, quite simple in the first chapters, is gradually brought u p to the level of an original text of "average difficulty." My hope, therefore, is that having followed my narrative u p to the reign of Ivan III, the reader will then be able to turn to a Russian source for the reigns of Basil III, Ivan IV, and their successors, or for that matter, to a Russian text dealing with any other period of Russian history, including the one covered in the present text. For my "coverage" of early Russian history is anything but complete —I am not a historian and what I wrote is not a historical treatise, but a text for language students. I believe, however, that I have succeeded in avoiding any serious historical errors in this brief outline of the formation of the Russian state. A series of four maps has been included. T h e s e maps should prove useful in familiarizing the student with the relative positioning of places and areas important in the unfolding of Russian history. LEON
