FIGHTING CANCER When his wife Bernadette was diagnosed with cancer, Jonathan Chamberlain vowed to find out as much as he could about the

disease. What he discovered shocked him. He found that doctors are pursuing treatments that are damaging patients in large numbers often with little possibility of curing them. On the other hand, alternative forms of treatment that appear to have exciting results — while being totally harmless — are ignored.

Jonathan Chamberlain read book after book in his own search for a solution to his wife’s illness. Each contained interesting information, but none provided the all-encompassing context that allowed a proper comparison of standard medical and complementary or alternative treatments. This book, begun after his wife’s death, contains the answers

Jonathan arrived at. In his view, every adult is responsible for making his or her own decisions about what treatments they wish to choose, but this responsibility can only be properly exercised if information is available and accessible. Fighting Cancer provides this information, and is a primer in basic cancer literacy.

Since one person in two will get cancer at some time in their lives, Jonathan believes that people should inform themselves about this disease and the range of possible treatments before they get cancer. Jonathan Chamberlain is a teacher, writer and activist for mental

handicap charities. He lives in Hong Kong with his son Patrick.
