Series Foreword

This series provides reference works in Syriac studies from original books digitized at the ICOR library of The Catholic University of America under the supervision of Monica Blanchard, ICOR's librarian. The project was carried out by Beth Mardutho: The Syriac Institute and Brigham Young University. About 675 books were digitized, most of which will appear in this series. Our aim is to present the volumes as they have been digitized, preserving images of the covers, front matter, and back matter (if any). Marks by patrons, which may shed some light on the history of the library and its users, have been retained. In some cases, even inserts have been digitized and appear here in the location where they were found. The books digitized by Brigham Young University are in color, even when the original text is not. These have been produced here in grayscale for economic reasons. The grayscale images retain original colors in the form of gray shades. The books digitized by Beth Mardutho and black on white. We are grateful to the head librarian at CUA, Adele R. Chwalek, who was kind enough to permit this project. "We are custodians, not owners of this collection," she generously said at a small gathering that celebrated the completion of the project. PREFACE. THE following Work—which contains a Syriac Translation of a very valuable Exposition of Christianity by the celebrated Father of Church History, long supposed to be lost —having been printed at the expense of the " Society for the Publication of Oriental Texts," it becomes my duty here to express my cordial thanks to the Society for this favour; and to offer, at the same time, a few notices of the work itself, and of the Manuscript from which it has been taken ; reserving all further particulars for the Preface and Notes to an English Translation of it now in the Press. That such a Work formerly existed, is evident from the testimony of Jerome, who tells us, that, among other Works of our Author, one, containing five Books, was On the Divine Manifestation*-, but as no work had ever appeared in Europe under this title and bearing his name, it was doubted by some, whether this was not the Treatise which he wrote against Marcellust.

under the title "Eusebius Csesariensis," an account of a Work said to contain five Books bearing a title corresponding exactly with that given by Jerome, as noticed above.

This title our Syriac work also bears; and this

number of books it contains. There are, moreover, extracts to be found in some of the MSS, preserved in various Libraries in Europe, said to be given from this work of Eusebius; which, as far as they have hitherto been obtained, correspond with the text of the places, in this Syriac Translation, to which they severally refer.

To these may be added many others, since found

cither in the " Praeparatio Evangelica," the " Demonstratio Evangelica," or the " Oratio de Laudibus Constantini," by our Author: from all which, as well as from other considerations hereafter to be adduced, it is sufficiently certain that the work described by Jerome, under the title mentioned above, was one altogether different from that against Marcellus, and that the following Syriac Text contains it. I shall only add now, that the MS. from which this Text has been taken is in large quarto, on fine vellum, elegantly, and generally very accurately written; that it has no date, but is probably not less than a thousand years old; that it was recently brought into Europe from the East; and will be found deposited in the British Museum. If, therefore, the following is not, strictly speaking, an original Text, still, as it contains a very valuable and

powerful work oil Christianity long supposed to be lost, and this as found in the only MS. of it known to exist, and, further, as it will supply an admirable Class-book for Students of the Syriac Language, the "Society for the Publication of Oriental Texts" cannot but have merited the thanks of every lover of Christian Antiquity, as well as of every friend of Oriental Literature, for the liberality they have shewn in bearing the expense of its publication in the following form.
