Preface The last checklist including frogs now placed in the families Hylidae, Centrolenidae, and Pseudidae was t h a t of N I E D E N ( 1 9 2 3 ) . I n the present checklist I have included references to all literature through 1974. The number of recognized t a x a are: Hylidae. — 36 genera, 544 species, and 607 species and subspecies; Centrolenidae. — 2 genera, 55 species, and 56 species and subspecies; Pseudidae. —• 2 genera, 4 species, and 13 species and subspecies, for a total of 40 genera, 603 species, and 676 species and subspecies. C o m M e n t : Two of LINNAEUS'type specimens (N.H.R.M. no. 155) are syntypes of Hyla punctata ( S C H N E I D E R ) . A N D E R S S O N ( 1 9 0 0 , Bih. Svensk. Vet. Akad. Handl., Stockholm, 26: 17) noted a third specimen in the same jar that "seems to me to be Hyla mframaculata." The third specimen was not found by the author when he examined specimens in the N.H.R.M. in July 1969. Thus, it seems as though no European specimen is now listed as a type specimen.
