Abrohom Nuro Library

Series Editor George Kiraz

The series contains reprints from rare books that once belonged to the Abrohom Nuro library. These books can hardly be found in Western university libraries. The content is primarily on Syriac studies and Eastern Christianity.

INTRODUCTION

After the Princeton Syriac Symposium, held during the summer of 2003, my wife and I had the pleasure of hosting the late Malphono Abrohom Nuro and his wife Antoinette at our home in Piscataway, NJ. I had expressed to Malphono Nuro at the time my desire to acquire all or portions of his library. Always an umtonojo, Malphono Nuro wanted the bulk of his collection to remain in the Middle East, in athro. He was open, however, to the idea of making copies and dispensing with some of the originals, especially when he had duplicates. During the Jacob of Edessa conference held in Aleppo (June 9—12, 2008), I inspected his entire collection, upon his request. It totaled between 5,000 and 6,000 volumes. Seven months later, he passed away. In 2003 I commissioned Malphono Nuro to catalogue his collection, at least in the form of a checklist, as there would be a great overlap between my private collection and his and I did not want duplicates. This cataloguing project was funded by Beth Mardutho: The Syriac Institute, whose eBethArke project at the time aimed at creating a digital library for Syriac studies long before Google, Microsoft, or the Internet Archive embarked on their massive digitization projects. Within the next two years, Malphono Nuro created a checklist of his collection. It is this checklist that is published in the current volume. From 2003 until 2009, the year Malphono Nuro passed away, I was involved in acquiring books from his collection, sometimes in original form and sometimes in clean photocopy form. All in all, around 1,000 were acquired. (The rest of the collection was either already in my private collection, or of no interest to Syriac studies.) I, and two anonymous scholars who supported these acquisitions, have deposited what was acquired with Beth Mardutho as the

Malphono Abrohom Nuro Collection. We plan to make parts of this collection accessible to other libraries and scholars through a reprint series titled Abrohom Nuro Library, published by Gorgias Press. I would like to thank the two anonymous scholars who were instrumental in the acquisition process during 2003—2009, and the various supporters of Beth Mardutho's eBethArke project. Above all, this acquisition would not have been possible without Malphono Abrohom Nuro himself, and his wife Antoinette who supported him for many years. This volume, indeed the entire series, is dedicated to the memory of Malphono Abrohom Nuro. February 9, 2009 Forty Day Memorial of Malphono Nuro George A. Kiraz
