COMPILER'S PREFACE Volume 42 contains systematic information originally published in Brenner, 1963, and Khlonova (Chlonova), 1961.

Brenner's investigation

constitutes one of the earliest, if not the earliest, major palynological study of the Lower Cretaceous from the Atlantic Coastal Plain of North America.

His samples included surface and subsurface sediments from

the Patuxent, Arundel, and Patapsco formations (Potomac Group) from localities in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.

Khlonova's study was

based upon samples from 8 localities in the eastern part of the western Siberian lowland along the Bax, Cbim, Kemb and Enuceu rivers.

These

samples were dated as Late and Latest Cretaceous. Systematics recorded in this Volume from Brenner, 1963, and Khlonova, 1961, include 15 new genera, 112 new species, 1 emendation and 14 new combinations.

The emendation and new combinations are

presented as Part I and Part II of the Appendix.

New taxa from Brenner

include one genus (Decussosporites) and 65 species, while new taxa from Khlonova include 14 genera and 47 species. proposed by Khlonova for her new genera.

The following names were

Accuratipollis, Circumflexi-

pollis, Compactipollis, Deplexipollis, Disyllabipollis, Expressipollis, Fibulapollis, MUltinodisporites, Occultosporites, Ocellipollis, Orbiculapollis, Seductisporites, Translucentipollis and Tricerapollis. Brenner's emendation of Exesipollenites Balme 1957 is reproduced in Part I of the Appendix, while the 5 and 9 new combinations proposed by Brenner and Khlonova, respectively are identified along with their basionyms in Part II of the Appendix.

Brenner's new species were assigned to 40 genera while Khlonova assigned hers to 28 different genera.

About one third of the genera.

to which KhlonoV'a assigned her new or previously described species. refer to extant plant taxa. To locate any significant specimen recorded in his 1963 publication. Brenner provided the following method to convert his published coordinates for use with other mechanical stages.

As a base from

which to determine a conversion factor he inscribed an "X" with known coordinates. on each of three blank slides. which he calls "Key slides". (In all cases Brenner recorded the horizontal component for any of his coordinates first.)

The difference between the "known" coordinates

on any of his "key slides" and those observed for that "X" position on the vernier readings of an alternative stage established a conversion factor between the two stages.

Proper "directional" application of the

horizontal and vertical components of this conversion factor to the published coordinates for any specimen recorded in Brenner. 1963. will convert his coordinates to vernier readings that will properly locate that specimen for observation on the alternative stage. The coordinates of each X is as follows: Key slide A. coordinates 28.7 x 119.4 Key slide B. coordinates 28.5 x 119.3 Key slide C. coordinates 32.2 x 120.1 Key slides are retained by the author in his personal collection of type slides. With regard to Klonova's identification of holotypes repetition of numerical designations purporting to identify holotypes in Khlonova. 1961. and in the CFSP references. indicate that these designations of themselves. cannot actually identify an individual specimen.

identification of her holotypes, in that figures illustrating the holotype are so noted in Russian by the word ronoTHn in the accompanying captions.

CFSP cites these illustrations by plate and figure

as part of its identification of the holotype. Khlonova's treatment of her proposed new monotypic genera in 1961 would not have provided valid publication of their names when published, per a strict interpretation of the requirements of Article PB6 1956 ICBN.

This Article reads:

"The name of a monotypic genus

of fossil plants published after 1 Jan. 1953, must be accompanied by a description of the genus indicating its differences from other genera."

Following deletion in 1959 of the Appendix entitled:

"Special provision concerning fossil plants", the essence of Article PB6 was combined with Article 42 of subsequent Codes until publication of the 1978 edition of the ICBN.

In this edition the special and

restrictive limitation imposed for the names of monotypic genera of fossil plants was also eliminated.

As Khlonova's treatment is now

in compliance with requirements pertaining to the names of monotypic new genera of both fossil and extant plants, her names must be recognized as validly published. The editors acknowledge, with gratitude, permission from the authors and publishers to reproduce systematic material from their publications.

Trilcte spore; lacsurae usually reaching the margin, commissure bordered by a narrow margo ca. 0.5 J.I. widc; outlinc in polar vicw variahlc, from triangular with straight sides to subcircular. Proximal surface usually smooth, although occasionally.the distal elements extend slightly onto it; distal surface crowded with numerous gemmae 1-4 J.I. in diameter. Description:

Trilete spore; laesurae reaching the spore margin, commissure bordered by a narrow lip ca. 1 p. wide. Exine, excluding sculptural c1emcnts, ca.1..') p. thick, covered with numerous closely spaced, blade-like and spinose processes that diminish in number around the proximal polc. Thc c1cmcnts arc drooped, twisted, and frequently fused at their tips; they are ca. 10 p. in hcight, 2 JJ. wide, and 1 JJ. thick. Dimensions: Maximum diameter 2i-J6 IJ. (2 Spccilllcns). Commel/is: This very rare form is characterized by its long, twisted, bladeiike processes; these processes arc longer than any other sculptural c1cments on the species assigned to this genus. Description:

Trilete spore; laesurae reaching margin, commissure hordered by a narrow lip ca. 2 J.L wide; outline in polar view triangular with slightly convex sides. Distal su rface and outer margin of the proximal surface reticulate, muri high and narrow; 1.5-3.2 J.L in height, ca. 1.2 J.L wide. At the intersection of the muri a characteristic dentate prolongation is developed, giving the muri an arched appearance. Lumina somewhat polygonal in outline, ca. 4.5-9.5 J.L across. Exine of the lumina and smooth area surrounding the proximal pole ca. 1.2 J.L thick. Dimensions: Maximum diameter 27(33)38 J.L (8 specimens). Comments: This species differs from Lycopodiumsporites austroc:/amlides1by the development of dentate projections at the intersection of the muri. Description:

Trilete spore; laesurae almost reaching the margin, commissure raised several microns above the general surface of the proximal side and bordered by an cxinal thickening 5-12 /J wide at the pole. The margo extends to t he margin of the spore and surrounds the ends of I he commissure, often darkening Ihe exine at the corners. The outline in polar view is triangular wilh straight to slightly convex sides; the corners are blunt.

The distal side characteristically contains a difTcrentially thinned circular to oval area centered at the pole in undcformcd specimens. The boundaries of the distal thinning are sharp and appear as a lighter area. Dimensiolls: Maximum diameter 47(65)81 Il (14 specimens). Comments: This species is easily recognized by the presence of a thin an:a on thc distal sidc. Occurrellce: Rare to occasional; sample frequency moderate to high. Bisaccate pollen; central body elliptical in polar view, with the longest dimension parallel to the length of the bladders; body wicith approximately equals bladder width. A marginal crest 5 -R Jj wide rims the proximal cap, its greatest width is wherc thc proximal roots of the bladder merge with the central body; exine of the proximal side scabralc; distal exine form!; a smooth area 4-9 Jj wide bctween the bladdcrs.

Bisaccate pollen; central body more or less circular in polar view; exine 3-6 p. thick, proximal surface scabrate, distal surface between the bladders smooth. Bladder large, widely attached on the distal side, bladder length approximately 1.5 times the width; infrareticulum distinct, lumina 1.5.,..2 p. across, muri ca. 0.5 p. wide. Near the inner one-third of the bladder the reticulum breaks up and the muri are radially directed.
