Compilers' Preface Volume 40 of the CataZog of FossiZ Spores and PoZZen concludes presentation of nomenclatural and taxonomic information from Malyavkina, 1949.

Fifteen generic names (Sphaerina to VoZuceZZina), 65 specific

names and 27 infraspecific names are handled.

Volumes 38-39 were also

devoted to this work, and readers are referred to the Compilers' Prefaces of those volumes for detailed information, including explanation of the CataZog's treatment of Malyavkina's Index ("Key"), stratigraphic and geographic information, Malyavkina's terminology, and the status of various infraspecific taxa found in Halyavkina's works. This volume also includes treatment of Malyavkina, 1953, a paper originally published in the same covers as Samoilovich, 1953 (see CFSP Vol. 13) and Gladkova, 1953 (Neogene pollen, no new taxa).

From

this paper 18 generic names, 51 specific names and 27 infraspecific names are treated. Nine new combinations are presented in the Appendix to Volume 40, and other "new combinations" are presented in the body of the volume because they were published in association with new infraspecific names. These "new combinations" could possibly be validations of names previously published by Luber and others. Malyavkina, 1953, treats materials from the central Soviet Union, primarily the Urals, the Embensk district and the Donets Basin. As explained in the Compilers' Preface to Vol. 38, (pp. 38:xiii38:xiv), CFSP editors have made some changes in Malyavkina's infraspecific rank assignments, in order to attain reasonable internal agreement in the rank of taxa presented.

40:iii

Some of the generic names from Malyavkina, 1949, appear to have been elevated to suprageneric rank in Malyavkina, 1953.

These are

designated as "types" or "pollen types", units with genera assigned to them--examples: 1953, pp. 136-138).

"Types InvoZuteUa, Reteatina, AaumineUa" (Malyavkina, Although Potonie and others have regarded these

"types" as suprageneric entities and have therefore cast doubt on their original status, the names retain generic status unless placed in synonymy. "Types" are intercalated between genus and "sub-group" in Malyavkina, 1949.

The "type" names are also used in construction of what appear to

be new generic names in Malyavkina, 1953, with prefixes based mostly on names of extant plants:

gゥョォァッイ・エ。セ@

BennettitaaeaeaaumineZZa, etc.

As in Volumes 38-39, "f. typiaa" in Malyavkina, 1949, is considered by the CFSP editors to represent the autonym.

If this form was il-

lustrated by a single specimen, the figure is taken to be of the implied holotype.

However, in Malyavkina, 1953, (example 40:190) f. typiaa

cannot always be interpreted as the autonym.

In Malyavkina, QYUセL@

"holotypes" are usually designated--by a preparation-number, followed by a second (slide?) number.

Unfortunately, more than one preparation-

number sometimes appears on the line usually reserved for the holotype designation; occasionally the slide number is omitted; the same serial designation may be used to identify the holotype for several different species!,

It is therefore clear that Malyavkina, 1953, did not designate

holotypes in the sense of ICBN, even though she used the word "holotype". For this reason we cite Malyavkina's "holotypes" in quotation marks. Often, because a single specimen was illustrated, the holotype could presumably be determined.

Malyavkina did not identify generic types,

40:iv

but monotypy or subsequent designation of type has often made it possible for CFSP to indicate the type species.

In Ma1yavkina, 1953,

there are a number of specific names which may have to be treated as not validly published because "alternative names" in the sense of ICBN may have been provided; example (CFSP 40:164):

Ginkgoretectina glabra

f. semistricta (caption) vs. Ginkgopollenites glabrus f. semistrictus (text).

This is prohibited post 1 Jan., 1953, per Art. 34, 1972 ICBN.

The nomenclatural sessions at the Xllth International Botanical Congress, held at Leningrad, June-July, 1975, effected changes to the ICBN that have impact on some statements in our Nomenclatural Comments and footnotes.

For example, the requirements of Art. 42 on monotypic

genera have been changed so that generic names with a description referred only to the single species, post 1 Jan., 1953, will not on that account be rejected.

This affects Nomenclatural Comments on 40:136,

40:139, etc., in which it is assumed per 1972 ICBN, that such genera are not validly published.

However, the Leningrad Code does not become

effective until published, and CFSP follows the 1972 ICBN (adopted at Seattle, 1969) until it is superseded. We acknowledge with particular gratitude the helpful comments of members of our editorial committee in preparation of the "Malyavkina volumes".

Not all members of the committee might subscribe to the

sanguine comments of J.M. Schopf: "I feel that the work you have done on this Halyavkina volume has been tremendous. I think that until her publications were treated in this way that they remained a positive threat to stability in nomenclature. You have now provided the means whereby the problems can be solved. It is unfortunate that Malyavkina did not take the same care originally in presenting the material, that you have in compiling the Catalog, but there is nothing better to be done about it now. Taxonomists unquestionably must take the names she used into account. If this is done, plenty of them can be disposed of in a regular manner and cause no further trouble. Lacking the effort you have given to it, her old treatments would have constituted a continuing chronic source of difficulty." H. T. Ames A. Traverse
