A Story of a Flying Beast

On the day of 14th December 1903, it was a very beautiful evening on the Ocean Front nearby Kill Devil Hills of North Carolina. The sun was gradually getting down on the horizon, the sky was painted with zillions shades of golden, orange, pink, blue and gray. Clouds were moving with pleasant breeze. Birds were returning to their nests with melodious songs. American Herrings and Gulls were noisy. Wild Geese were enjoying at distance in wilderness on the beach. Kids were building castles in sands. Young ones were playing beach volleyball. People were enjoying nice food and drinks on the beach. Atmosphere was very live and the view was very scenic. Everybody were happy and enjoying. Little far away from the crowd, there were two bothers named Wilbur and Orville Wright on a little hill. While sitting on shrubby wild-grass, they were discussing something with scratching their heads. They had absolutely no interest in enjoying the vibrant and live surroundings. Suddenly Orville told Wilbur “Did you see that?” And, their eyes were caught wide opened on a flying chariot. They were speechless. The flying chariot landed smoothly in sands besides the hill. The chariot disappeared as soon as a rider with long beard in a shiny white robe got down. For a little while, the man in a white robe enjoyed the beauty of a pleasant evening, and rejoiced the vibrancy and liveness on the beach. Then, he turned towards the little hill and waved his hand to them, Wilbur and Orville waved their hand to him as well. Then they ran to him with their eyes and mouth wide open. Orville remained little shy, and Wilbur introduced himself “Hi, I am Wilbur Wright, and he is my brother Orville. And, you?” He said “Hi, I am Elijah Seer.” Orville asked him out of curiosity “How could you fly that chariot? Can you tell us, A Story of a Flying Beast page 2 of 4
please?” Elijah said “It is a long story. And, I have no idea about HIS craftsmanship. Is there anything very serious?” Wilbur replied “We designed a flying machine like your chariot. It requires little run before take-off. Today, I drove it from Kill Devil Hills all the way down to Avon on the highway 12, but it did not take-off at all. And, all our efforts were absolutely futile.” Orville said “We have a demonstration on 17th. We have invited many people from all over places. If it does not fly, we cannot show our face to the world.” Elijah comforted them and said “It is just your frustration. Still you have enough time to work-on.” Both of them requested Elijah to stay with them. Elijah agreed. They took Elijah to a dinner in their newly build flying machine driven on the roads. Elijah observed the flying machine and amazed with their workmanship. Everyone ran out when they arrived at very famous Piccolo’s Italian Restaurant. All of them inquired Wilbur and Orville about how it works. Wilbur said “It is not ready yet.” Oliver said “Please leave us alone. We are hungry. Come to Kill Devil Hill on 17th and watch the sky.” At dinner table Elijah asked them “How do you got inspired?” Wilbur said “We have read and heard a lot about Elijah's Chariot since our childhood. If Elijah can fly in the divine chariot, why can’t we?” Orville said “And, our father brought a gift - a toy. When we tossed that toy into air, it flew across the room until it struck in the ceiling. The toy was broken into pieces when it hit the ground. I collected all the pieces and study how it worked. That made us very obsessed to build a flying-machine. So we can also fly like Holy Elijah.” That, indeed brought a smile on Elijah’s face. Everybody listened to their conversation. As it was already too late after the dinner, they took Elijah with them for the rest and decided to continue on next day. On next day morning, Wilbur showed Elijah a glider that they had flown as an unmanned kite on October 5, 1900 near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina and explained how it works. Then, Wilbur showed Elijah another glider with some modifications which was last flown in November 1903. Elijah was amazed. And, he asked few questions to both of them. While answering various questions Wilbur and Orville got various ideas of a rear rudder, high capacity engine pushing two propellers, a fuel tank, and elevator lever. Elijah suggested few more things. Wilbur and Orville modified their powered flying machine according to new ideas, and suggestions. They made several runs with positive results. On second day they installed three instruments onboard. A Veeder engine revolution recorder measured the number of propeller turns. A stopwatch recorded the flight time, and a Richard hand anemometer, attached to the front center strut, recorded the distance covered in meters. The flying-machine was the first of its kind, and it was not equipped with very sophisticated instruments like in modern aeroplane now a days. Their main goal was a successful flight. Once Wilbur and Orville carried out all modifications, they made several runs. But still there was something missing. Elijah suggested slightly curved wings to provide more uplift thrust. They recalculated and re-checked. They modified the wings for Max takeoff weight: 745 lb (338 kg). And, everything looked just fine. 17 December 1903, Orville took his turn at the controls, as Wilbur had already had the first chance on 14th after winning a toss. His first flight lasted 12 seconds for a total distance of 120 ft (37 m). Taking turns, the Wrights made four brief, low-altitude flights that day. The last flight, by Wilbur, covered 852 ft (260 m) in 59 seconds, much longer than each of the three previous flights. As the flying-beast successfully flew everyone was very happy with the achievement. Elijah took his leave from Wright brothers. In 1904, the Wrights continued refining their designs and piloting techniques in order to obtain fully controlled flight. Major progress toward this goal was achieved with a new machine called the Wright Flyer II in 1904 and even more decisively in 1905 with the third, Wright Flyer III, in which Wilbur made a 39-minute, 24-mile (39 km) nonstop circling flight. In 1969, portions of the original fabric and wood from the Wright Flyer traveled to the Moon and its surface in Neil Armstrong's personal preference kit aboard the Apollo 11. As the 100th anniversary on December 17, 2003, a pilot named Kevin Kochersberger attempted to recreate the original flight at 10:35 on December 17, 2003, on level ground near the bottom of Kill Devil Hill. Thus, the Wright Brothers, Wilbur and Orville, became the legends of the flying beasts. They shortened distances around the globe. They made it possible to fly over to far lands and America is regarded as the land of great innovations. And, this was just the beginning, then gradually flights were equipped with more sophisticated instruments and controlling devices that we are having today in modern aeroplanes. *** Story by: Grappy.
