ALAN OF LILLE'S DE FIDE CATHOLICA OR CONTRA HAERETICOS NIKOLAUS
M.
HÄRING , S.A.C.
When the learned Cistercian Prior of Ter Diunen (Les Dunes ) in Flanders , Belgium , Charles de Visch ( d . 11.4.1666 ) , was preparing his
edition of the works of Alanus de Insulis , he examined a publication entitled Adversus haereticos et Valdenses which had appeared in Paris in 1612. For some unknown reason , its editor , I. Masson ( 1544-1611 ) , publiched only two books of this important treatise ' , although the author announces in the prologue that he divided his work into four .
Both chroniclers fail to mention Alan's Planctus , his Regule theologice and his Distinctiones , although they enjoyed considerable popularity . Alberic even draws attention to the dedication of the work to William of Montpellier .

The fact that Alan spent some time at Montpellier has been well established by B. Hauréau who discovered a note in a collection of sermons ( MS Paris . B.N. Lat . 14859 , f . 233 , s . xiii ) to the effect that Master Alan de Insula translated into Latin a sermon delivered in the vernacular at Montpellier by a Cistercian abbot The princeps addressby reigned ed Alan was William VIII who from 1152-1202 Alan's dedicavery high regard for William's learning by submitting tion betrays ,
