This booklet is a primer for those who wanttotrythefourthoption;itsetsoutto showyouhowtomakesimple,butpractical, armour. Beware though, armour making can become a hobby in its own right and this book is but an introduction! Beforeyoubeginarmouring Decidewhatyouneed!Thismayseemobvious but experience has shown that people canrushout,makesomethingentirelyinappropriate, then wonder why no one will let them play in it! Sad but true. Fitting Obviouslyyourarmourshouldityou.Thismeanspatternsetc.willneedadjusting.Thereforedon’tjustgo outandcopyanexistingpieceandexpectittoit— itprobablywon’t.Ifyouhavebeenborrowingarmour youwillprobablyhavenoticedthiseffectalready;universalitmeansthatituniversallydoesn’tquiteitanybody.Whatisnotsoobviousisthatyourarmourshould ityouandwhateverelseyouarewearing.Paddingcan changeyoursizeandshapeconsiderablysobuildyour armour around it, not the tee shirt you wear in the workshop.Armourshouldalsoallowyoutomove;ifit catches,rubspainfullyorjamsthenyou’vedonesomethingwrong—ixit.

Chapter2—Materials Worldwideperiodarmoursweremadeoutofjustaboutanything;cloth,metal, leather, bone, horn, bamboo; basically if it was available and it worked it was used!Europeanarmourstendtobelessesotericandgenerallysticktometaland leatherovercloth.Whenlookingformaterialsshoparound,lookforoffcuts, remnants,orconsiderbuyinginbulk.Armourdoesn’thavetocostafortune. Steel Sheetsteeliseasilyobtainablethesedays;lookintheYellowPagesunderMetal Stockists. In the 1800s Sir Henry Bessemer invented a new process for making steel. Modern steel is therefore very different to period stuff; in fact it’s a lot better!MildSteelistheeasiestandcheapesttogetholdofandthemostconvenienttowork.Foronethingyoucaneasilycoldworkit-whichmeansyoudon’t needaforge.Mildsteelcontainslessthan0.25%carbon,hasanon-ibrousstructureandwilltakeahighpolish-itdoesrusthowever.Itcomesaseitherbright rolledsheetswhichareshinyandhenceeasiesttopolishorhotrolled,whichare marginallyeasiertoworkandcomeinablackcolour.Galvanisedsteelismildsteel withacoatingonittostopitrustingwhichisineuntilyouscratchit;itisanasty greycolourandisn’tsuitableforanythingthatinvolvesalotofshapechanging.I tendtoavoidthestuff!Stainlesssteelcomestoavarietyofspeciications;it’smore expensivethanmildandmoredificulttowork,however,ifyougettherightstuff itwon’trust.Ifyouplantodoanythingdramatictostainlessyouwillneedto annealit,whichwillrequireheat,moreofwhichlater. Mildsteelisthebeststufftostartoffwith.Itissoldinsheets(generally2x3 meters) of various thicknesses. LengthwiseIkeeplotsof1/4inchforrivetingtwopiecesofmetaltogetherand 3/8inchforrivetingthreebits,articulationsandthelike.It’salsoworthkeeping afewreallylongones,youcancutdown,forthatannoyingjobwheretheones youhavedon’tquitereach.TheonlyotherdiameterIuseasigniicantnumber ofis1/8inch(2.4mm),foringersongauntletsandotherinework. Tubularrivetswithaheadsizeofaround1/2inch(13mm)areuseful.Thereis aspecialtoolforsettingthesethings—Iindthatputtingthemontosomething latandhittingthemwithahammerworksine!Thedoubleheadedtypeshown abovearesuperiortothethinbacktypeastheylastlongerandyoucanputthem inupsidedownwithoutgoing,“Darn,thatlookswrong!” 4

Wood Plywood makes good shields — obtainable from any DIY shop, builders merchantorthelike. Brass Expensive,heavyandnotstrongenoughforimportantpieces;brassishowever greatfordecoration. Aluminium Not at all period. However sometimes turns up as scrap and can be used to makelightweightbodyplatesorthelike.Dural,aircraftgradealuminiumalloy, ismuchtougherandcanbeusedtomakeshields. Thermoplastic Notperiod,surprise!Idealforlightweightbodyplatesorhiddenstiffenersunder leather or cloth; sort of inauthentic hard leather. Great for keeping your total armourweightdownsoastoavoidexcessbaggagechargeswhenlyingtoevents around Europe. Can shatter if it gets too cold, for exaple, Finland in winter. GuesshowIfoundthatout? Cloth Usedtomakeundergarmentsortoholdarmourtogetherasincoatofplatesand the like. Markets, material remnant shops, re-enactors markets, charity shops, sewing shops and the like are good places to look for materials at reasonable prices.Ifyouarelookingforcanvasyoucanalsotryatentmakerorcamping shop.

Chapter3—Tools Youaregoingtohavetoacquireafewbasictools,asyouprogressyouwillprobably acquire a few more! New tools can be expensive so start looking around secondhandtoolshops,junkshops,steamrallies,agriculturalorengineering auctionsortoolsales.Youwillalsoneedaplacetowork,somewherewherethe noise won’t drive the neighbours mad. You are also going to need somewhere withagoodloororyouwillhammerthroughit!Ashedorgarageisine.
Hammers Youwillneedahammertorivetwith;asmallballpein,aboutapoundweight,is ideal.Youwillalsoneedasofthammertobendthingswith,lookforarelatively heftyrubberorrawhidemallet.Theseyoushouldbeabletoindeasily.It’salso usefultohaveathumpingstickforbashingthingslikenailsorcoldchisels;basicallyafairlyheavyhammerwhosefaceyoudon’tmindchewingup!
Forshapingworkyouwillneedhammerswithpolishedfaces.Anymarksyouput intothemwillbetransferredtoyourworksokeepthemseparatefromthegeneralusehammers.Adishinghammer(formakingelbows,kneesetc.)isamust; anythingrelativelyheftywithacurvedfacewilldo.Alargeroundendballpein canbeused,althoughthecurvewillbeabitextreme,oryoucouldalwaysgrind alatfacedhammerdownabit.Itisprobablybetterthoughtolookforapurposemadedishinghammer.Purchasingonenewisagoodinvestmentalthough indingonesecond-handshouldn’tbetoomuchofaproblem.Collectingavariety of dishing hammers will be very useful. A planishing hammer is used to 7
TOOLS smoothsurfacesandremovehammermarks;anylat-facedhammerwilldo.If youneedtodoanyraisingyouwillneedahammerforthis;alargepurposeraisinghammerisbestbutthebackofacrosspeincanbeused.
Formers You will now need something to hammer onto.Nodon’trushoutandbuyananvil— theycanbehelpfulbutarehardlyessential, unless you want to be a blacksmith as well. Insteadindyourselfatreestump.Ifyoucut aslighthollowintoonepartofthetopthis willformadishingblock.Therestcanbeused forhammeringonto.Alsolookforpiecesof hardwoodasthesecanbecutintoveryuseful shapes for forming things around. Other thingstokeepyoureyesopenforarelengths of metal tube (for bending things over or around),bowlingballsandoddchunksofmetal.Beinventive,failingthatbuy somestakes—thesecomeinavarietyofshapesandsizes,themushroomshaped beingprobablythemostuseful.Unlessyouarerichbuythemsecondhand.
RivetingBlock Youwillneedasmooth,lat,hard,surfacetorivetonto.Ifyouwanttouseround headrivetsyouwillneedarivetsnapofthecorrectsize.Iuseanoldlumpof stainlesssteelwithcurvedholesdrilledintoit.
Workbench Somethingformarkingthingsouton,holdingaviceorclamps,bashingthings onetc.Getsomethingtherightheight.(Workmatestendtobeverylow.)Imade mineoutofanoldbedframeandscrapwood.
Vice For holding things like formers, what you’re iling, what you want to thump and a hundred other jobs. The easiest to getisanengineersvice;unfortunatelythesedon’tlikebeing thumped! Instead try to get a leg vice, some times called a blacksmiths vice, they are fairly common second hand and aredesignedtobehammeredonto.Mountitontoyourworkbench.
Cutters Making armour will involve cutting lots of devious shapes frompiecesofmetal;adecentcutteristhereforeagoodinvest8
TOOLS ment.Adecentcutterisperhapsthemostawkwardtooltoindatareasonable price. ThecheapesttoolI’veeverseenusedwasacoldchisel.Simplychiseltheshapes outonananvil,thengrindthemintosomethinguseable.Verynoisyandtime consuming—notrecommended. Atthebottomendofthemorepracticalrangeoftoolsisthehumblehacksaw— cheap,cheerfulbutwilltakeyouforever.Youcanuseanelectricjigsawbutthey tendtobeverynoisyandrathertimeconsumingaswell.Makesureyouusethe correctbladeandsupportthesteeltopreventitbouncingaround. Snips,sometimessoldasTinsnipsorShearswillcutthinsteelbutyouwillneed agiganticpairtocut1.2mmorabovewithanyease.Thisisactuallyveryperiod. CompoundactionsnipsorAviationsnipsgiveyouamechanicaladvantagewhen cutting;theyonlyhandleupto1.2mmsteelthough. OnceuponatimejustabouteveryengineeringshopinBritainhadapairofRecordwheel cutters—thensomeoneinventedpowertools. You can still occasionally ind them second hand, though as one dealer said “They are ascommonasrockinghorseshit.”Theyoperatelikeagiantcanopenerandcancutlines, curvesorcomplexshapesinto1.6mmorthinner steel. They are supposed to mount into a special block, though I’ve never seen one, butaviceworksine.Theyalsocomewithan extrahandlesoyoucanusethemhandheld; great for cutting sheets in half. If you see a pair buy them! A similar machine is a Sykes PickavantMiniCutterwhichcanalsohandle upto16gaugemildsteel. Modern workshops use loor or benchmountingshears,powernibblers or power shears — yep they all sound expensive. The benchmounted shears are giant guillotines, which cut straight lines very well; they aren’t so hot on curves. Nibblers work by punching lots of smalllumpsoutofyoursheet,rather messy and very noisy. Power shears aregreatifyouaffordthem(around £300) and aren’t left handed like me.Dependingontheinputpower they can handle thick plates (for example,aBoschGSC2.8willcutup to 2.8mm steel). I have seen a nibblerattachmentforanelectricdrill 9

HoleMaker Toputrivetsinyouneedholes.Forclothpushasharppointthrough,thuscutting as few ibres as possible. For leather get a punch — belt punches are far superiortothehandpunches,withtherotatinghead,whichtendtobendifused alot.Formetalagoodoldelectricdrilldoesine;useHSSdrillsnotwoodworkingones,orifyouwanttodrillstainlessuseBoronCarbinetippeddrills.Ifyou putaleatherwasheronthedrillnexttothechuckyouwillpreventitscratching ifyoupushyourdrillintoofar.Periodarmourersprobablypunchedtheirholes, themodernequivalentistouseahandpunchsuchasa‘Whitneymetalpunch’.I investedinoneoftheir“No.5juniorhandpunch”setsafewyearsagoandfound itsavedalotoftimeandeffort!Itpunches3/32to9/23inchholesinupto16 gaugesteel.Youwillalsoneedacentrepunchtomarkwhereyourholeswillgo (andgiveadrilltipsomethingtostartoffon).AfteryearsofcursingtheautomaticspringloadedpunchesIgaveupandwentovertousingagoodoldsolid punchandahammer.Somuchformoderntechnology.
Files A hand ile will remove rough edges, inish or shaping your piece or remove thatawkwardlittlebitthatisjammingthings—asmallroundilewillcorrect thatholethatisn’tquiteintherightplace.Filescomeinavarietyofshapesand degreesofcoarseness—it’sworthhavingaselection.Keepthemcleanwithaile brush(tostoptheteethclogging)andalwaysusethemwithahandle.
Polishing Asimplepolishingandinegrindingmachinecanbemadebymountingafoam sandingwheelonthefrontofanelectricdrill.Ifyoumountthedrillinastand thingsworkevenbetter!150gritinebeltswillremovesharpedgesanddoine shaping;whentheygetworntheycanbeusedtopolish.DIYshopsonlysell150 or less grit. The less the number the coarser the paper. Tool shops sell iner gradesnormalyforbeltsandersbuttheyitwheels,justcheckthediameterwhen youbuy.Iind220or280gritgiveaniceinish. Ainepolishingmachinecanbemadefromacheapbenchgrinder.Takethe grindingwheelsoffandreplacethemwithmops.OKtheydon’trunuptothe samespeedasaproperpolishingmachinebuttheycostatenthofthepriceand don’tneedathreephaseelectricsupply!IfyouputaSisalmopononeside,a stitchedclothinishingmopontheotherandusestainlesssteelpolishingcompoundyoucangetamirrorinishwithabitofeffort.

Chapter4—Safety Ifyouaregoingtodosomethingdoitwellanddoitsafely.Wearleathergloves wheneverpossibletostopyougettingcuts;heytheyevenmakeoneswithKevlar inthesedays.Throwawaysharpedgedoffcuts,swarf,etc.somewheresafe;not the loor or the bench you are about to put your hand. Remove sharp edges beforeholdingbitswithyourhandsandbeforewearingit!Weareyeprotection especiallywhendrilling,grinding,sandingorpolishing.Wearadustmaskwhen polishing, sanding, grinding, etc. When drilling make sure the item is held irmlyandremoveanyswarfcausedbythedrilling.Earprotectorsareagood ideaespeciallywhendishingorusinganoisycutter.Weartoeprotectionfootwearandwearsensibleclothing. Armouring is fun; injuring yourself isn’t! DIY shops and industrial clothing/ safetyshopswillsellprotectivebits—theyareagoodinexpensiveinvestment, Honest !

Shaping Leather is a lexible material and can generally just be bent to shape. Hard leather such as sole leather needs to be made lexible by wetting it. When wet tooling leather can, surprise-surprise, be tooled (pressed down on to give interestingpatterns).Whenmakingstrapsandthelikerememberthatleather stretches—addafewextraholes!
CuirBouilli Ifyousoakvegetable(natural)tanleather,stretchitaroundaformer,woodis good,thendryitslowlyinalowovenitgoesrockhard.Polishitontheoutside tokeepwateroutandyouhaveanicepieceofarmour.

Chapter6—MetalWorkingTechniques Riveting Therearetwopurposestoriveting.Theirstistoholdthings irmlytogether,asonahelmet,theotheristoformapivot,as inanarticulatedknee. Forairmitdrillaholeinbothpiecesthesamediameteras yourrivetthenpeintherivetfullydowntotheinnerplate. Foranarticulationmaketheholeonesizebiggerthantherivet andpeintheheadoverlightly.Awasherontheinsideishelpful.Aleatherwasherbetweenthetwoplatessurfaceshasseveral purposes, it holds the two moving surfaces apart giving themroomtomove,stopstherivetfallingout(ifitsatightit ontheshank)whenyouturneverythingoverforpeiningand allowsyoutokeeptherivetloosewithoutrattling. Peiningsimplyinvolveshammeringtheendoftherivettoform a second head — bring on the ball pein hammer! Place the rivetthroughtheholesinyourpieceswiththeheadontheoutside.Placetheheaddownontoahardlatsurface,intoarivet snaporintoacutoutthatmatchesitshead.Nowusingtheball endofthehammerhitthetopoftheexposedshanktomushroomit.Smooth outthepeinusingthelatfaceofthehammer.Rememberthisistheinsideof yourarmour—youwantsomethingsmoothandrelativelylatpointingatyour skindon’tyou?
Bending It’sveryeasytopushabitametalandbenditatthatpoint;whatistrickieristo getacurveovertheentirelength.Longbendsarebestachievedbyhammering downoveraformer;abitofmetaltube,alog,pipe,stake,whatever—provided it’s curved. Start by curving the entire length. Don’t worry unduly about how muchjustgetthemetalmoving.Nowhammeritsomemore,pushitwithyour hand,andhammeritbackifyouhavegonetoofar,untilyoureachthedesired shape.Useasoftmallettoavoidmarkingthemetal. 17

Dishing Thinkofapieceofclay;ifyoupushyourthumbintoitanumberoftimesyou cansqueezeitoutintoabowlshape.Ifyoupushitintoabowlshapedformeritis eveneasiertoformit.Thisisinessencewhatyouaregoingtodowithyourpiece ofsteelusingahammerandadishingblock. TherearetwotheoriesofdishingdependingonwhetheryouareaTinsmithor aSilversmith.Onesaysworkfromtheoutsidein,theothersaysworkfromthe middleout;Iinditmakesnodifference. Todishapieceirstmarksomeguidelines;whenyoustartyoumaywanttodraw lots of concentric lines, when you get more experienced you may just want to mark the centre. Polishing Evenbrightmildsteelcomeswithaprotectivecoating,tostopitinstantlyrusting,whichhastoberemovedtoachievethatbrightpolishedlook.Youcaneither polishbyhandorbymachine.Startwiththecoarsestgradeworkinginonedirection.Continuewithainergradeworkingacrossthedirectionofthelastgrade, soyoucanseewhenallthemarkshavegone.Keepgoingwithprogressivelyiner grades of grit then polishing compound until you reach the inish you need. Doingabitofinitialpolishingonthingswhiletheyarestilllatwillsavealotof time!Keepthingsshinywithcoatingsofcarbodypolishorwax(neutralshoe polish)andavoidrain.Ha!Fatchance!

Raising Thinkofthepieceofclayagain,thistimefolditdownoveryour thumbsqueezingthefoldslatasyougo.Raisingcanbeconsideredthesuperiorformingtechniquebecause,unlikedishing,it doesnotthinthepieceoutasyougo.Italsorequiresthemost work; lots of hammering leads to work hardening, even on a relatively small piece, so annealing may well be required. You dishontheinsideandraiseontheoutsideofthepiece.Most periodpieceswereprobablyraised;mostmodernpiecesareprobablydished. Forraisingyouwillneedastakethatisabit ofbarstockorthelikeyoucanholdinthe vice to fold your metal down onto. EdgeRolling&Wireedging Oneoftheprimarywaysofstrengtheningpieces andpersuadingthemtostayinshapewhileothers cloutthemwithswords,axesandthelike.There aretwowaysofrolling,withtherollontheoutside orinside,andwireedgingisjustarollwithsomethingsolidinthemiddle;whichyouusedepends onpersonalchoiceandwhatperiodyouaretrying toreproduce.Allthreemethodsstartoffthesame wayfold/raisealipontothetopofthepiece;about 1cm is good but it will vary depending on wire thickness,effectyouwant.Theimportantthingis thatitisevenandlatespeciallyattheends,which foldeasily,andaroundcurvesinthemiddle,which requiremoreraising.Asalwaysworkinstagesand workevenly.Nextbendthelipoverinacurve;if you are wire edging, trap the wire under the lip asyoubringitdown.Againthetrickistoworkin stagesandworkevenly.Ifyoupushasectiondown onitsownit’sliabletocreaseandruintheeffect.Forarollontheoutsidethat’s it.Forarollontheinsideyouhavetopushtherollback.Todothisinishyour rollonaformerwithanotchcutinitthesamesizeasyourroll.
Planishing Orhowtopolishwithahammer.Planishinggivesyouaniceevensurfacewithout grindingorthelike.Usefulforgettingsurfaceslat,blendinghammermarksin orgettingridoftheoddmistake.Simplyplaceyourpiece,outsidefacingup,over aformerofthesameshapeandhititwithalatpolishedhammer.Dothistothe entiresurface,workingevenly,toachievethedesiredeffect.Thinklotsoflittle strikesnotonehugeone.Whatyouhitontoonlyhastomatchtheshapewhere youhititsoabarwithitstopgroundcanbeusedforalargepiece.Domestakes havevariouscurvesonthemsoyoucanmoveyoupieceabouttogetamatch.

Gamberson Thissuppliesbasicpaddingunderthe bodyarmourandsomethingtohang your arm armour off. Some people rely on their gamberson (with a few minoradditionssuchasakidneybelt) as their torso protection. This gives themexcellentmobilityattheexpense of protection. If you are learning to ight,aswellasarmour,youareliable togethitalotsobodyarmourmight notbeabadidea—yourchoice! Makingagambersonisasewingjob; gogetaneedleandthreadorborrow a sewing machine. The material you make it from should be relatively tough (it’s going to take a beating), adsorbent(youaregoingtosweatintoit),colourfast(unlessyouwanttostarta newfashioninoddlycolouredlesh)andwashable(seesweatingabove).Period gambersonsweremadefrommultiplelayersofclothstitchedtogetherorpadded with raw wool or similar material, modern ones often use an internal ill of cottonorpolyesterbattingtoachievethesamelookwithlessweight.Adescriptionofanarmingdoubletofthe15thcenturyis“adowbeletofffustean(atypeof heavywoollenbroadcloth)lynedwithsatenecuttefullofhoolis”.Aheavyouter material,suchascanvasorcalico,isthereforeappropriatewithasofterlining nexttotheskin.Forextraventilationyoucanaddbuttonholesdownthequilting seams. Theshapeofyourgamberson(seeillustrationsabove)dependsontheperiod youaretryingtoportray.Fromapracticalpointofviewitshouldallowyouto 23
PADDING move. Arm movement is especially important; if you can’t cross your arms in frontofyouormoveyourarmaboveyourheadthedesignistooconstricting. Apatternthatwillworkwellformostgambersonsisasfollows: 1. Takemeasurementsasshowntotheleft. A= 1/2upperchest(armtoarm) A’= 1/2upperback(armpittoarmpit) B= 1/4chestmeasurement C= 1/4waistmeasurement D= 1/4hipsmeasurementplus2to5cm E= collarbonetowaistline F= waistlinetobottomofskirt G= backofnecktowaistline H= waistlinetobottomofskirt(back) Note that the waistline in the late medieval periodtendedtobehigherthantoday’sandwas measuredjustundertheribs.Thiswillgiveyouthebasictorso. ForearlierperiodgambersonsthemeasurementCshouldbeabout the same as measurement D giving a tubular trunk. Later period tended to have a more pronounced waistline following the whims of fashion, in which case measurement C should be a rather snug it. For a lared skirt increase measurement D. Remember to keep thearmholeslargefor easeofmovement. 2. Cut out one set of panels, baste together (long,easilyremovable stitches)andtryiton. Gothroughyourrange ofightingmotionsand makesurethatitdoes notpinchorbind.Cut andmodifytosuitthen remove the stitches, add5to8cmextra(2-3inches)tothemeasurementstoallowforthe quiltingthenusetheadjustedpiecesaspatternstocuttherestofthe cloth. 3. You can make gambersons out of pre-quilted cloth, or you can sew yourownquilting-simplycuttwoidenticalpanels,oneoftheouter and one of the inner fabric, machine stitch rows down them then stufftherowswithwhateveryouhaveathand. 4. Cut out, sew and pad arms in the same manner. These can be attachedtothebodyeitherbyhandstitchingorbypointsandties, which have the advantage of leaving the armpits open and ventilated. 5. Addclosuresdownthefront(lacesorbuttons)andarmingpoints; lacestoattachyourarmandshoulderarmour. 24
PADDING Sewinganarmingpoint 1. Workfromtheright(outer)sideofthefabric.Makeacircleof stab stitching round the eyelet position; inish by bringing the needleupjustoutsidethecircle. 2. Now push a sharp point (scalpel, scissors point, stiletto...) into the centre of the circle and start forcing it through, working frombothsidesalternatelyuntiltheholeisalmostasbigasthe outlinestitching. 3. Puttheneedledownthroughtheholeandbackoutalittlefurtherround,whippingovertheedgeoftheholeandtheoutline stitching.Pulleachstitchtightlyasyougoround.Thestitches shouldjusttouchastheypassthroughtheholeandradiateout alittle. 4. Toinishoffmakeoneortwosmallstabstitchesfrombackto front,thenlosetheendinthestitchingattheback.Youshould haveairmslightlyraisedring. Thebestthreadtouseisirmcottonorlinenthread,40gaugeorthicker;syntheticthreadsfraytoomuchforhandsewing.
LimbPadding Armour, by itself, will absorb a portion of any blow hitting it. The purpose of padding it to reduce what remains to an acceptable level; where you don’t get hideousbruisesbutyoucanstillfeeltheblows;yesyoucanoverpadthings!You havetwochoices;eitheryouallowwhatisbelowthearmour(gamberson,padded hose,lesh)toabsorbtheremainingimpact;oryouaddextrapaddingtothe insideofthearmour.Felt,leather,orclosedcell(backpackers’sleepingmattype) foamcanallhelp,experimentuntilyouindwhatsuitsyou. 25

JointPadding Jointsaresusceptibletodamageandshouldthereforebewellprotected.Extra protectioncanbebuiltintoyourundergarment;anextrapadwornunderthe armour, such as one from a sport like hockey or skate boarding; or padding addedtotheinsideofthearmour,suchassleepingmatfoam.Againexperiment untilgoodprotectionandmobilityareachieved.
HelmetPadding Theamountofpaddingrequireddependsonhowhardandhowoftenyouexpect tobehitonthehead.(ForfurtherinformationseeChapter18.)Thewayyoupad itdependsonpersonalchoice,therearethreebasicways;lineitwithfoamorfelt, buildthepaddingintoacoif(closeittingcap)orelsebuildaleathersuspension ringliketheinsideofamoderncombathelmet.Ofcourseyoucanalwaysuse combinationsoftheabove.TokeepthingssimpleI’lljustdescribepaddingfor themostextremecase,tourneyighting.Forthisyouneedalayerofclosedcell (backpackingsleepingmat)foamwitheither,extrareinforcingpads(madeof lessdensefoam)oracoif. PaddingthePotandGreatHelmsisfairlystraightforward.Cutthefoamtothe shapeoftheindividualpanelsofmetalandittheminside.Firstputinalayerof closedcellfoamagainstthesteel.Thenaddopencell(mattressorpackingtype) foamwhereneededtomakeasnugit. Topadacurvedtophelmmakealinerasfollows: 1. Measurethecircumferenceofyourhelm at about brow level. This gives you your baseline.Nextmeasureupfromthebrow tothecrownofthehelmet(thetopmost point). This gives the height. Divide the baselineintofoursegmentsandturneach segment into a triangle with rounded edges. Measure the depth of the rest of the helm and add this to the bottom of thetriangles.Allowaholefortheface. 2. Cut the resulting shape from closed cell foam. Trim as necessary to get a good it inside your helmet then duct tape together. 3. Take strips of open cell foam and put a strip across the brow, at the back of the head,ateachsideandputadiskoffoam atthetop.Leaveplentyofroombetween stripsforaircirculation. 4. Trythehelmonandseehowitfeels.Trim paddinguntilasnugandcomfortableit isachieved 26

Chapter9—Head When designing helms beware of gaps between head and neck armour and swordsizedholesatthethroat!Helmetsshouldbemadefromatleast16-gauge steel.Makingacardboardtemplateandadjustingthistoityourhead,rather thanplayingwithbitsofsteel,savesalotoftimeandeffort!
PotHelm I designed this helm as an exercise in minimalist cutting—itonlyhasthreeplates 1. Cut the front and back plates asshownonthepattern,igure 9-1. To cut the eyeholes drill a series of holes around the insideoftheslots.Cutbetween the holes with a hacksaw or coldchiseltheniletheremainingpointsbacktothemarked line. 2. Curvetheplatesasshown.The crease at the front is simply achievedbybendingtheplateoveralatedge. 3. Bend the top of the face plate down so that tab B covers tab A. Rivet them together, on both sides,usingtheholesnearesttotheeyeslot(don’t rivet the other hole yet). Pein rivets on inside of helmet. 4. Cuta2.5cmwidegroveintoathick pieceofwood.Usingthisasaformer beat the overlap into V shaped crinkles. 4. Takearaisinghammer(acrosspein withthebacksmoothedwilldo)and a convenient stake (ideally with a curvedfaceandalatend).Placethe top plate onto the stake so that the markededgeisatthelipofthestake. Strike the overlap, immediately next tothemarkedline,soastoforcethe metal at this point down onto the surface of the stake.Thiswillforcethemetalinwards.Strikeinan identicalmannerevenlyallaroundthetopofthe overlapuntilyoucomebacktowereyoustarted. 5. Periodhelmsoftenhadthebreathsononlyoneside,usefulforpreventinglances gainingagripduringatourneybutdetrimentaltoventilationandvision.Iwould suggestholesonbothsides,undertheeyeslotandaroundthenoseandmouth area. DomeToppedHelm Variationsindesignwillallowthistypeofhelmtobeusedforawidevarietyof periodsandightingstyles. Two basic frame designs are described below - many more are possible,however,thelogicbehindthemremainsthesame.Abrowband goes around the head. Foreachplate: a) Removeboltsfromaroundholethenplaceplateinside.Check theit;re-dish/planishuntilhappy. b) Mark the rivet hole positions through the frame. Remove the platethemchecktheholesareinsensibleplacesi.e.notright nexttotheedge!Ifnecessaryreit. c) Whensatisiedwithitcutoffanyexcessmetalfromtheiller plate(morethan1cmfromtherivetline)thendrillafewofthe holes(acoupletopandbottomisgood). d) Rivettheplateinplace. e) Drillandrivettheotherholes.Youcantryanddrillalltheholes beforeyouittheplatebutIindinaccuraciesinmarkingand drilling move things enough so that after riveting a few holes therestnolongerquitelineup. f) Thedomeisnowinished. 12. Cut out a back plate, if required—the illustration this comesfromshowsafrontplateandmailwornoverthe restoftheheadtoprotectthebackandneck.Curvethe back plate then dish out the bottom to give the shape shown. CoatofPlates Excavation of graves from the battle of Wisby in 1361 revealed a number of Coats of Plates; a popular fourteenth centurystyleofbodyarmouroftenwornasre-enforcement overmail.ThedesigngivenhereisbasedonWisbynumber 6(thesimplest)withthetieloopsfromnumber1tomake it more comfortable to wear. If you look up the reference in Chapter 20 you can get a lot more patterns! The plates mountontotheinsideofacoat,shapedabitlikeaPoncho, which goes over the head and buckles at the back. HiddenElbow This is simply a metal cop that can be worn behind a shield or under clothing to protect theelbow. Itismadeinanidenticalfashiontothearticulatedoneaboveandheldinplace byaleatherstrap.
FloatingElbowCop Thisisanelbowprotectorthatislacedto thegambersonindependentlyoftheforearmandupperarmprotection. 1. Scale then cut the cop from steel (yesitisbasicallyarectangle). 2. Dish the hashed area of cop to it elbow;itneedstobedishedmorein thecentrethantheedges. 3. Continuedishinguntilacurvedcop shape is formed. As you work the outer edges will be forced out to formwings.Accentuatethisshapeby planishing them on a stake. Try to get a crisp fold edge between the dishedpartandtheouterwings. 4. Roll the edges of the wings to strengthenthecop. 5. Drill lacing holes, two sets in the outersideandoneintheinner. 6. Hold in place, on gamberson, with threesetsofpoints.

WisbyFingeredGauntlet Thisisbasedupon14thcenturyremainsunearthed inGotland.Thecuff,whichismissingontheoriginal, is my own design. The entire gauntlet consistsof29plates,whicharerivetedontotheoutside of a leather glove. In fact the most dificult part of the construction is making the padded glove!Ifyouareluckyenoughtohavesmallhands then ind two pairs of gloves that it inside each other.Buildthegauntletsonthelarger,outerpair and use the inner pair to adsorb the impact of any blow that strikes home. If however,youhavelargehandsyouwilleitherhavetoattachalayerofleatherto thetopofanexistinggloveorelsesewalargeouterglove. Assemblingthegauntletisverysimple. 1. Mark out all the bits, bar the knuckle platesontoyoursteelandcutthemout. 2. Mark,dish,thencutouttheknuckles. 3. Bend everything to shape and raise the ingertipplatesoverattheends 4. Riveteverythingtogether.

HourglassGauntlet Adesigninwhichthefoldedandraisededgesimpartalotof strength. 1. Cut out the templates for the three main pieces and adjust to it your hand. Check that, with glove on and padding in place, your hand can it through the wrist holeandthatthegauntletitsyoursword. 2. When satisied with the it, cut the various pieces from steel. 3. Roll the hand plate into an oblong-based cone (as shown on the diagram in igures 13-2to13-4). 4. ForthenextpieceyouwillneedaformerwithaVnotch in it. Place the plate over this and hammer down the area shown. This should then match the shape of the
handbetweenthethumbandbaseoftheforeinger. 5. Rollthewristplate,againintoanoblongcone,and then raise the bottom out to match the base of the hand plate. This is fairly tricky and must be done correctly or else the gauntlet will not have its full strength. Check the shape of the two plates in relation to each other and your hand. Remember that youmustbeabletogetyourhandintothegauntlet! Iftheopeningisnowtoosmallbendtheplatesout intolargerovalsanduseabiggerjoiningplate.You willindalittledishingaroundthebaseofthethumb helpsthegauntletgoon. 6. Temporarily bolt the two plates together. Then shapethejoinerpiece(which isfunasitbendsineveryconceivable direction at once!). Finallyrivetthethreepieces together. 7. Roll the cuff of the wrist plate. 8. Shape the guard plate and thenraisetheendofthehandplatetomatch it. Rivet the guard plate in position and then rolltheendofittoprovideextrastrength.

PaddedLegs A style of armour often seen in early 14C illustrationswornovermail.Ashortenedversionoftenhad a decorative border of leather or fabric along the bottom edge. The design is also ideal as hidden armour; see Chapter 18. Thepaddedhoseshouldbemadeofseveral layersofheavycanvasorcalicostuffedwith cotton or other padding. The cuisse, thigh covering, should be quilted vertically and eitherpaddedquitethicklyorbackedwitha rigidmaterial,forexampleleatherorplastic.Theareaofthekneeshouldbequilted into 3-5 sections and stuffed quite full of paddingtoadsorbtheforceofanyimpactonthemetal cop. It is also worth padding the area below the knee quitewelltoprotectfromshotsthatglanceoffthecop. Thepaddingcanbeextendedallthewaydowntheshin, endinginafootstirrup,orendedabout6inchesbelow the knee area. The long version is good if you plan to 77

ArticulatedCop Thisisalaterdesign,which,whilebeingmoredificultto make than the loating one, gives far better protection. Thearticulatedcopshownconsistsofivepieces,theupper and lower articulation plate’s act in the same fashion as thoseonanelbowandallowyoutolexthekneetositor kneeldown.Thebottomarticulationalsoallowstheknee tolexintheoppositedirection.Thispermitsyoutofully straightenyourlegif,forexample,youwanttoswaybackto avoidabloworputyoufeetintoastirrup.Ifyouhavemade anelbowcopthenakneeshouldbenoproblem—whichis whyIhaven’tgoneintohugedetailsbelow—seeChapter12 82

A loating cop will require a strap around the back to hold it in place. Chapter15—Shields Shieldsaregenerallymadefrom12mm(1/2inch)plywood(marineplyisbest). Lessauthentic,butlongerlasting,shieldscanbeconstructedfromDural,aircraft gradealuminium.Smallbucklerscanalsobefabricatedfromsteel.Shieldsize isverymuchacaseofpersonalchoice.Somebravesoulsdoincrediblethings withtinybucklers,othersprovidesterlingserviceintheshieldwallwiththings thatlooklikebarndoors—therestofushavesomethinginbetween!Experiment untilyouindasizeandshapeyoulike. HandandArmProtection If you have a nice BIG shield no blow can get behind it, right?Sorry—wrong—axeandhalberdheadscomeinsideshields, peoplecanhookyourshieldopenexposingyourhandandarm, andcraftypeoplewillalwaysindwaysofgettinginshotsbehind it!Whilstnotasvulnerableasaweaponholdingarmtheshield arm still needs protecting, in particular the ingers, hand and elbow.
Facings,ShieldEdgingandPadding Thesimplestfacingyoucangiveashieldisnoneatall—yeswood is period! A nice effect for Viking shields, and the like, is to carveafewsmallgrovestogivefakeplanking.Protectingashield against the elements is, however, a good idea and even a ‘wood effect’shieldcanbeneitfromacoatofmattvarnish.Oncethe strapandgripittingholeshavebeendrilledthefaceoftheshield canhavealayerofclothgluedtoit,whichbothprotectsitfrom blowsandgivesagoodsurfaceforpainting.Forheraldryandthe likeyouneedalayerofundercoat(youneedaspecialnon-ferrous metalsoneforDural)followedbyatopcoatofhouseholdenamels orsimilarpaint. Shieldedgescanbeprotected,eithertostopthembeingchewed upwhenstruckor,whennon-steelweaponsarebeingemployed, topadtheshieldtostopitdestroyingweapons!Edgingashield 87
SHIELDS alsomakesitsafertouseasajagged,splinteringedgeisahazardtobothyouand youropponent. The most epic thing you can do to the edge your shield is to cover it with 20-gaugesteel.Simplycutastripasshown,folditaroundtheedgeandrivetit on—ofcoursethiswon’tactuallymakeitlastforeverbutitmayseemthatway afteryou’veluggeditaroundforabit!Alighter,morepracticaledgingcanbe madewithrawhideleather.Thiscanbepurchasedinconvenientstripsasdog chews; but I suggest you avoid the lavoured ones! Simply soak in water until soft,cuttosizethentackonandallowtodry.Acoatingof paintstopsthemgoingsoftagainafterightingintherain, anytimeduringtheBritishsummer. Thereareseveralwaystopadashieldedgebutirstedgeit, evenifit’sDural,withrawhide—thisstopsawoodenshield disintegrating and the hard edge of a Dural one cutting straight through the padding. You now need to add somethingresilientoverthisedgesdon’tneedtobesoftformost combat forms, they just have to have enough give to make weaponslastmorethanoneblow.Stickingalayeroffelton worksasdoessplitrubbertubing,waterhose,thickleatherandthelike.Finally you need to hold everything in place. Felt or soft tubing will need something toughsuchasalayerofleatheroverit,thicktubing(unlessit’sareallyhorrendouscolour)orleathercansimplybelacedinplace.
Round,HeaterandKiteShields Flat, round shields are very easy to make; buy a pieceofplywood,markoutacirclethencutitout (ajigsawspeedsthingsup). Heaters and kites can be made either lat or curved. If you can’t work out how to do a lat onethenyouhaven’tbeenpayingattention!Fora curvedonebuytwo(ormore)piecesofplywhose combinedthicknesscometoabout12mm(three layersof4mmworkswell)andsomewaterproof, slowsetting,woodglue(e.g.Cascemite).Gluethe pieces together then either curve the wood over aformerorsimplypullittoshapewithrope.Ply tends to bend better in one direction than the othersoassemblethepiecestocurvetheeasyway! Allowtodrythencuttoinalshape.
CentreGripShields Theserequireabosstoprotectthehandandagauntlettoprotectthewrist.If youarefeelinglazygoandbuyaspunbossatare-enactorsmarket!Failingthat dishoneoutor,forareallydeepone,buildituplikeaminidomedtophelm. Vikingroundsarelargewoodencentrebossshields;woodenbucklersaresimply 88
SHIELDS a mini version! To fabricate cut the wooden round then cut out a hole in the centre to it your hand. Rivet the boss, over the centre hole, using two of the rivetstoholdthehandgripinplace.Analternativewaytomakeabucklerisfrom athickpieceofsteel(14gaugeorso).Dishthecentre,rolltheedgesthenadd ahandgrip.Theshapeofthehandgripwilldependonthedepthofyourboss, the size of your hand and how you like to use your shield. I make mine from barstockwithawoodencoveringforthehand;otherpeoplepreferawrapped leathercovering.
ShieldFittings It should be emphasised that shields are very personal items. How a shield is hungwilldependonthelengthofyourarm,yourpreferredhand/wristangle andtoalargeextenthowyouuseyourshield.Themostimportantpointisthat yourshieldshouldfeelcomfortableinthenormalguardposition.Ifit’sputting astrainonyourarm/wristatthisrestpositionthenitisgoingtocausealotof discomfortattheendoftheday;anywayyouaresupposedtobeightingyour opponentnotyourshield!Additionallyremembertokeeptheelbowfree;straps thatcutintotheelbowareveryannoying!Unfortunatelyindingtheidealpositionislargelyamatteroftrialanderrorkeepexperimentinguntilyouindthat perfectshield. Handgrips For a simple handgrip take a large door handle, raiseittoacomfortableheightabovethebackof theshield(withwoodenspacers)andthenboltit inplace. Cuttingtherequiredshapefromapieceofthick, stiffleathercanmakealexiblegrip. Youcanmakeasolidgripfromapieceofaround 2cm(3/4inch)widestripof14gaugeorheavier bar stock. The approximate size is shown below, howeverasyourhandinunlikelytobethesame sizeasminemakeacardboardtemplateirstthen adjustthesizetoitbeforecuttingthemetalup. Remembertoallowroomforyourgloveorgauntlet.

Personally,Imuchpreferadjustablestraps,ifonlybecausetheyare somucheasiertoputonandtakeoff!Theyalsoallowforchangesin padding,armarmourandthehugeincreaseinyourforearmmuscles asyoudiligentlypracticeforseveralhourseveryday!Severalattachmentmethodsareshowninigure15-1—takeyourpick. Padding Shields tend to get thumped pretty hard so unless you have some padding, between it and you, you are going to end up with a sore arm! This padding shouldextendfromjustbehindyourelbowtoeitheryourwristorhanddependingonthetypeofgauntletyouplantouse.Feltorclosecellfoamcoveredin clothorleatherwillmakeaperfectlyadequatepad. Hanging Theinalstageistoattachallthebitstotheshield.Coachboltsaregoodfor this,astheydon’tprotrudeatthefront.Alternativelyyoucouldriveteverything on,themajordisadvantagewiththisbeingthatitisthendificulttotransferthe ittingstoanothershieldwhenthewoodontheoriginalgivesway.Remember tocutoffanyprotrudinglengthofboltlushwiththenut—youdon’twantto impaleyourselfonyourshieldnowdoyou?Itisalsoimportantthatyourhand andelbowaren’ttooclosetotheshieldedgeasaxeandhalberdheadscanstrike overit.Eventhenblowscanstillcomeinsideashield(especiallyifit’shooked byapolearm)sodon’tthrowawayyourhandprotectionandshieldarmelbow cop. For a round shield lay your arm along the diameter with your elbowatleast5cmfromtheedge.Next,withthepaddingunder your arm and holding onto your handgrip, move your wrist aboutuntilitfeelsright.Markthepositionsfortheboltsthrough the holes in the grip. Then lay your straps over your arm and mark their bolthole positions as well. Temporally rough tack or screw everything in place, put the shield on rotate it a few timesandcarefullytryafewblocks. Adjustthegripandstrappositions until the shield feels comfortable, doesnottwistaroundthearmanddoesnotputtoo much strain on the wrist. After adjusting glue the paddinginandbolteverythingelseinplace. 90
SHIELDS To hang a heater you irst need to ind how it balances. Hold the shield, and aplumbline(bitofstringwithaweightontheend),onthecornernearestto whereyourhandwillgo.Allowtheshieldtohangnaturally(asshownbelow) thenmarkthepositionoftheplumblineontotheback oftheshield.Usingthislineisairstestimateofwhere yourarmwillgoroughlyattachthegripandstraps(tacks workquitewell)tothebackoftheshield.Youwillwant your hand to be at least 8 cm from the edge (thereby avoiding axe heads etc.) and your wrist at a natural angle.Nextcarefullymovetheshieldupanddownafew times adjusting the placement of the ittings until they feelcomfortable;don’tdoanythingtoodramaticorthe shieldisliabletofalloffontoyourfoot!Oncetheyare positioned to your satisfaction bolt them in place and glueinthepadding.

Chapter16—MaintainingArmour Whenarmourgetshititabsorbspartoftheimpactbydeforming.Itshouldthereforebeobviousthatifyoudon’tstraightenitoutitwon’tworkaswellnexttime itgetsstruck. Itisvitallyimportanttoregularlycheckyourarmourfordents,cracks,loserivets, breakingstraps,slippingpaddingandthelike. Theeasywaytoremoveadentfromonesideofyourarmouristohititonthe othersidewithahammer!Legsandthelikecannormallybebeatenbackinto shape,inthismanner,overasuitableformer,abitofwoodworkswell.Remember totakethepaddingoutbeforehammering. Helms can present a problem because it is dificult to wield a hammer inside their narrow conines! A simple way to get around this is to use a metal bar as shown below. Another way is to push thehelmbackintoshapewithacarjack (a small hydraulic one works well). Supporttheundamagedsidewithapieceof wood.Thistechniquecanalsobeusedto reshapehelmsthathavestartedtolatten inwardsatthesides;barrelhelmsareparticularlypronetolosingtheirovalshape. Cracksareworryingastheyindicatematerialfatigue.Ifacrackappearssomewhereimportantreplacethecrackedpiece—atonce!Ifyoucan’treplaceitbin it!Minorcracksinsteelcanbeweldedorbraisedbacktogetheragain,however cracksareadeinitecaseof“ifindoubtthrowitout!” Strapsshouldbereplacedassoonastheyshowanysignofwear;havingastrap break in the middle of a battle is not recommended; been there! Please note thatholdingyourarmourtogetherwithstickytapeisneitherasceticallypleasing, period,norsafe!Ifastrapkeepsbreakingindoutwhy.Forexamplewasitinthe wrongplaceordoesitrequirethickerleather?

M AINTAININGA RMOUR Rustingwillreducethestrengthofyourarmourandregularpolishingwillgraduallyreduceitsthickness.Paintingtheinsideofyourarmourandcoatingthe outside with oil, wax or polish will help to keep it rust free and make it last longer. Paddingwillgraduallybecomecompressed,andhencelesseficient,itgetsregularlyimpacted.It’sworthchangingyourhelmetpaddingonaregularbasis.

Chapter17—Authenticity Re-enactors spend an inordinate amount of time arguing about Authenticity; whichisinterestingbecauseIcan’tevenindthewordinmydictionary!Itdoes howeverdeineAuthenticas“genuine,notforged”.Ifyouacceptgenuineas‘made as in period’ and forgery as a modern short cut then Authenticity becomes a measure of how Period your re-construction is. On these grounds wearing an exact copy of a piece of historic armour makes you authentic—or does it? Consider if you had been alive in the middle ages,ratherthantheoriginalowner,wouldthe armour have been made a different shape? Is wearing a set of armour designed for a cavalrymanauthenticforightingonfoot,orworse stillthatofakingcorrectforsomeoneportraying a rank and ile soldier? Is the piece you are copying even in the same state as when it was made? I remember a lovely exhibit, at the Tower, of 16C armours and portraits of peoplewearingthem.Fromtheportraitsitwas clear that the armours were originally black, aneffectthathadlongsincebeenlovinglypolishedaway!Tocomplicatethingsfurtherearly collectors had the habit of altering pieces to makethemintomatchingsuits,sohoworiginal isthepieceyouarecopying? My irst suggestion, therefore, is that it is better to try and understand how andwhyanarmourwasmaderatherthanslavishlycopyoneofthefewsurvivingexamples.Onecanthensetaboutdesigningone’sarmour,astheoriginal armourer would have rather than just making a Chinese copy! This approach alsohasanumberofadvantagesfromthepointofviewofsafety.Rememberthat, throughouthistory,armourhasevolvedtomeetthethreatsposedtoitswearers. Weshouldthereforedesignourarmourtomeetthethreatsposedbyourstyles ofcombat.Unfortunatelythisattitudemayleadtoobviousdifferencesfromthe originalarmours.Forexamplealthoughitisunlikelythatallearlymedievalwarriorshadhelmetsmostre-enactmentsocietiesnowinsistonthembeingworn! 95
AUTHENTICITY If this is the case so be it—authentically you would expect a heroes welcome whenyoustaggeredback,batteredandsoakedingore,fromthebattleield— tryexplainingthistoyourbossonMondaymorningasyoudripbloodonhis carpet! ButwhyalltheinterestinthisrathernebulousconceptofAuthenticityintheirst place?Quitesimplytheidealisattheheartofre-enactment;withoutahistoricalbackgroundthehobbybecomesnothingmorethan“funnypeopleinfancy dress!”Soaseconddeinitionmightbehistoricalaccuracy,somethingthatpeople aspiretoatdifferinglevelsdependingontheirinterestwithinthehobby.Some seektoputonanentertainmentmanywishtobeeducational,otherstocreatea westernmartialart,agloriousfewstrivetogetintothemindsetoftheperiod;all wanttohavefundoingit!Nowforthepracticalpart;howhistoricallyaccurate doyouwishtobe?Atthesimplestlevelthisentailshidinganythingmodern—a tabard works wonders! At the highest level it entails all aspects of your attire, fromthebootsupwards,tobeaccurateportraysofhistoricalitems.Me—Itend toaironthesideofpracticalityespeciallyasItendtolytovariouseventsaround Europeatpresent.MyoldsetofsteelWisbyplateswouldtakeupconsiderably moreofmybaggageallowancethanmycurrentplasticlinedBrigandinedoes. Bothhoweverlookineontheield.Hopefullythenextchapterwillthrowfurtherlightonwhatyouwillneed.

ControlledStyles Stylewherecontroloverblowslargelydeterminessafety. StagedCombat Employedbythemoretheatricalgroups.Involveschoreography,setpiecemoves or prearranged sequences. The aim is to entertain the crowd and armour is mainlythereforshow. LiveRolePlaying Usessoftlightweightlatexrubberweaponstoachieveasafefreeformcombat style. Armour supplies atmosphere rather than safety. Degree of ‘realism’ dependsongrouprunningevent;oneofthebestVikingeventsI’vebeentowas aLRPone. TouchCombat Employedbythemajorityofgroupsyouwillseeputtingonshowsathistorical sitesaroundthecountry.Itinvolvestakingrebated(notsharpened)weaponsand swingingtheminacontrolledmanner.Blowsarepulledsothattheytouchrather than strike an opponent. The degree of pulling varies from group to group, lightly armoured early medieval groups tend to use minimal force, later fully armoured ones can get quite epic! Armour requirements vary accordingly! In generalthoughyouarelookingatarmourtoprotectyouwhensomethinggoes wrong.Mostgroupsuseheadarmour(brokenskulls,lostteethandeyesarenot recommended)andhandprotection(becauseyouwillgethittheresomeday).

FullForceStyles Theemphasisisnowonthearmourtoprovideprotection.Foranearlyperiod lookyouaregoingtoneedtohidearmourunderyouclothing,socalledhidden armour. MartialArts GroupssuchastheAcademyforEuropeanMedievalMartialArtsandtheHistoricalArmedCombatAssociation(checkouttheirwebsites)aretryingtorevive theworksofTalhofferandothermastersasMartialartsinmuchthesameway astheJapanesedidfortheirtraditionalightingarts.InasimilarfashionvarioustourneysocietiesarelookingattheconceptofChivalryinthesamelightas Bushido. Somegroupsusepaddedweapons,inmuchthesamewayasnon-contactKarate clubsuselexiblesplitrattanswords,othersfavourarmourandfullspeedblows toevokeasenseofprowess.Tournamentgroupsareparticularlykeenonauthenticityintheirendeavourstorecreatetheatmosphereofaperiodtourney. BéhourdStyle GroupssuchastheSocietyforCreativeAnachronisms,theFarIslesandmanyof theTournamentSocietiesuseacombatsystemlooselybasedontheBéhourd,a tournamentformusingwoodenweapons.Thisleadstoanapproachsomewhere between a full contact sport and a martial art. Un-pulled blows are employed andarmourisusedtoprotectvitalareasfromdamageandtocutdownonbruising. Armour standards for such groups are high and must be met before you canenterthelist.Authenticityis,however,notnecessarilyapriorityasthemajor concernissafety.
FemaleFighters Thedifferencesbetweenarmourformenandwomenarefairlyminor: 1. Womentendtohavelargerhipswithlessfat(naturalpadding)coveringthem.Sincethisisafairlycommontargetareatassetswithgood paddingbehindthemsavealotofgrief! 2. Groinshotsdonotdothepermanentdamagetheydotoamale— theystillhurtalot!Amaleboxisuselesssoseekoutafemaleone designedforKarateorothercontactsportssuchashockey. 3. Thefemalechestcomescompletewithbreasts—presumablytomake upforthelackofbeergutthatsomanymaleightersseemtolike carryingabout!Theeasiestwaytoprotectthemissimplytoobtain a good sports bra or else to wrap a piece of material several times aroundthechest,whichisapparentlywhatpeopleusedtodobefore theinventionofbras,andthenshapethebodyarmourtoit.Single breastcupsoftheRedSonyastyleshouldbeavoidedastheiredges cancutintothechestandplainoldpaddingisn’treallyenough.

LeftHandedFighters Ussinisterpeoplestandtheoppositewayaroundfromtherest!Inpracticethis means: 1. Your weapon holding hand will be pointing at your opponent’s making mid blow collisions probable and increasing the chance of youbeinghitonthehand,wristorswordarm. 2. Legshotswilltendtobedirectedtowardstheinsideofyourrightleg, as opposed to the outside of the left leg for a right-handed ighter. Legshotsarealsoquitelikelytoslideupandhityouinthegroin.To protectyourselffromthesetendenciesaddinnerwingstoyourknee cops,makesureyourlegarmourwrapsfarenougharoundthesideof yourlegs,andmakeabsolutelycertainyourboxits! 3. Yourshieldisintheperfectpositionforpunchblockingsocheckthat thehandgripissoftenoughtoabsorbtheimpact.Iindastiffleather grip preferable to a solid wood/steel one. You are also going to be hangingyourshieldatadifferentangletoaright-handedighter.
InjuryPrevention Injurypreventionshouldalwaysbetheparamountconsiderationwhenbuilding armour.Firstoffmakesurethatthearmourits!Thereisnothingworse,inthe heatofabattle,thanindingthatyourgreavesarechewingupyouranklesand yourshieldistryingtobendyourwristatanimpossibleangle.Secondlylearnto moveinyourarmour;nomatterhowlittlearmouryouwearsomemobilityand visionwillbelost.Ifyoudon’tgetusedtowearingyourarmouritssheerweight cancausemusclestrain!Thesolution—wearyourarmourwhenpractisingtoget usetoitandwarmupbeforeyouighttoreducethechanceofhurtingyourself. Alsokeepyourarmourwellmaintained;ifit’sbrokenitwon’tprotectyou!
