Exercise 46 A. 1. Behold, seven years o f great plenty will c o m e in all the land o f E g y p t a n d will rise after them seven years o f famine and a l l the plenty that was in all t h e land a f Egypt shall be forgotten. 2. I n this world a n d in t h a t to come, in both o f them have mercy on us. . Glory to the O n e who is three, and the three are one. 4- At the third hour and at every time ( o f p r a y e r )

— 29 — we adore the cross and sign it on our foreheads. 5They shall not allow the nuns (diaconesses) to come singly to the church. 6- Our Lord fasted forty days and forty nights. 7. Glory to King Christ, Who crowned and magnified His worshippers in the four quarters (of the world); 8. David, king and prophet, sang and said in the fiftyfirst Psalm: "Have mercy on me God". 9. At mid-night bribe enters to the judge. 10. The martyrs saw two ways — one to life and the other to death — and they longed for that which was narrow, through which they might attain new life. 11. And he gave the fruits of faith thirty fold and sixty fold and hundred fold according to the true word which our Lord said in the Gospel. 12. Three are (the things) which shake and terrify me — the hour of death and the terrible tribunal and the hell. 13. Behold, the generations are arrayed in his very way and they are coming one by one and they are afraid to pass from one place to another through it. 14. I am built on Sem'on Peter (Kepa) and on seventy-two pillars, the church answered and said to the controversialists. 15. But in the eve of the Sabbath that dawns Sunday Mary Magdalen and the other Mary came to see the sepulchre. 16. But know thou, my beloved, that crossing of the J o r d a n was divided thrice, for the first time, once, by Joshua (lit- Jesus son of Nun) and secondly by Elias, and then by Eliseus. 17. For, hundred minus three martyrs were there. 18. Take thou a three-yearold calf and a three-year-old goat and a turtle dove and a voung dove. 19. When Daniel saw the vision of four beasts he saw first (the vision) of the children of Cham, seed of Nemrod, who (are) the Babylonians, and secondly (that) of the Persians and of the Medes who are of the children of Japhet, and thirdly (that) of the Greeks, the brothers of the Medes and fourthly (that) of the children of Sem, who are the children of Esau. 20. (Antiochus) defiled the holy place and brought to an end the sacrifice and oblations for a week and half of a week (of years) which make ten and a half years (lit. ten years and half of a year). 21.

— 30 — T h e y were given up to his hands until a time of times a n d half of a t i m e ; which time and half of a time are a week and its half, which are ten and a half years. 22. T h e y ate Pasch on the fourteenth of the first month, which is April (Nisan) the month of flowers, the first month, (the month) of the year. 23. F r o m the sixth hour to the ninth there was darkness and H e gave up His spirit to His Father at the ninth hour. 24. Noe and his children were in the ark for twelve months and ten days till they went out. 25. I will send you mv blessings in the sixth year and it will make the harvest of three years— of the sixth and the seventh and the eighth— and you shall eat of the harvest of the sixth year till the ninth year. 26. T h a t youngest of them was about eleven years old, more or less. 27. But the day on which they did suffer martyrdom was the seventh of November. 28. On the fourteenth of December therefore, on this very day the Egyptian martyrs of God were seized before the gates of the city ( o f ) Ascalon. 29. But on the following day, on the 16th of the month of February they brought them before Parmelianos with the company of Pampilos. 30. St. George, the servant o f Christ, was crowned (with the crown of martyrdom) on the 24th of the month of April on a Friday at the ninth hour. 31. The Saint stood in prayer and made supplication (on) Monday Tuesday and Wednesday and the plague was withheld from them; and in those days none of them died. 32. And the building of the church took six months and three d a y s — M a y and J u n e and J u l y and August and September and October and three days from November. 33. All the multitude together (were) forty two thousand three hundred and sixty besides their servants and hand-maids; these (were) seven thousand three hundred and thirty seven and their attendants who were serving them two hundred and forty five; their camels four hundred a n d thirty five; asses six thousand seven hundred and twenty. 34. And it happened in the seventh year on the tenth of the fifth month ( t h a t ) men of (lit. from') the ancients of Israel c a m e to a s k

— 31 — of the Lord, and they sat before me. 35. In the ninth year of Sedecias, King of Juda, in the tenth month* came Nabukodonosor, king of Babylon, (he) and all his army against Jerusalem and besieged it; and in the eleventh year of king Sedecias in the fifth month, on the ninth of the same month, the city was opened. 36. The king's scribes were called at that time, in the third month which is June, on the three and twentieth of the same month, and they wrote everything Mardocheus had written against the Jews, to the commanders-in-chief, and to the lords and chieftains of cities from India to Ethiopia, one hundred and twenty seven cities (to) the city according to its letter, and to the people according to their (lit. its) language and to }he Jews according to their letter and their language. 37. In the year four hundred and sixty of the reign of the Greeks which is the year fifteen of the reign of the all powerful king, our lord Trojan Caesar, in the consulship of Comodos and Cyrilos (Kurilos) in the month of September on the fifteenth day of it, the faithful of the city entered before him (the judge). 38- In the month of August of the year six hundred and twenty of the reign of Alexander of Macedon Licenis (himself) made persecution against the church and all the Christian people. 39- And that word was in preservation for one thousand three hundred and sixty four years after the imposition of the Law and the word is four hundred and thirty years prior to the Law 40. For, in the days of Noe, because of the wickedness of men, He (the Lord) promised that the days of man would be one hundred and twenty years, and in the year six hundred of the life of Noe (ie., when Noe was six hundred years old) he blotted them out. 41. For, thus is written by David in the ninetieth Psalm: "Thousand years in the eyes of the Lord (are) as the day of yesterday that has passed"; and so our wise masters say that as the world was constituted by God in six days so at the completion of six thousand years the world will be dissolved and there will be the Sabbath of God like the Sabbath that was after six days. 42. He devastated one

— 32 — million Indians (Ethiopians) before Asa and he again devastated in the camp of the Assyrian one hundred and eighty five thousand. 43. Condone thou hundred dinars according to thy poverty and thy creditor will condone thee ten thousand according to his greatness and he will not reckon with thee the capital (prepayment) and the interest. 44. O n the twentieth January of this year which is the eight hundred and thirtyfifth year of the Greeks we started from Hirta of Na'man with the virtuous priest Mar Abraham, son of Eupros. 45. I killed all of them, who were two hundred and eighty men, monks (lit. sons of covenant) and lay-men, and afterwards 1 led with me an army of one hundred and twenty thou3and and went to the city of Najran and besieged it (for) not a few days. 46. Consider and see that since the time when Sodom was overthrown till (the time when) Jerusalem was built there were eight hundred and ninety six years. 47. From the exodus of Israel (that was) from Egypt till (when) Jerusalem was built— its great building— by Solomon and the temple was constructed there were four hundred and eighty years. 48. Therefore, the total number of years (that are) from the overthrow of Sodom till the six hundred and fifty fifth year of the reign of Alexander, son of Philip the Macedonian is two thousand two hundred and seventy six (years). 49. But Alexander reigned (for) twelve years; and there were kings of the Greeks after Alexander; there were seventeen kings; and their years were two hundred and sixty nine (years) from Seleucos Nicanor to Ptolemy and there were Caesars from Augustus to Philip Caesar — twenty seven kings; and their years were two hundred and ninety three 'years); and eighteen years of Severus. 50. All the years between ( o f ) the first and the last destructions of Jerusalem constitute four hudred and sixty five (years); and when you deduct from them seventy years of Babylon (captivity) they constitute three hundred and ninety five years.

Exercise 48 A. 1. Let there not be many masters (teachers) amongst you, my brothren but you should know that we are guilty of greater punishment. 2. Out of the same mouth come forth curses and blessings; it is not becoming, my brothren, that these (things) should be done so. 3. Is it possible that sweet and better waters should gush forth from one fountain ? 4. Henceforth for ever praise is due to Thee, oh God. 5. Appoint, Oh Lord, a watcher to my mouth and a guardian to my lips that my heart may not turn aside to evil word and that I may not do works of iniquity. 6. Our Lord Jesus Christ, let Thy cross be a fortress to us and let us be protected within it. 7. From the rising of the sun to the setting there of great is the name of the Lord. 8. Let Thy body and Thy blood, we have received, not be for condemnation nor for vengeance for us, O h Lord, but (be) for the remission of sins and for forgiveness, for rising up at Thy right hand and for cofidence. 9- When thou standest in prayer recollect thy mind with pain and bridle thy thoughts and restrain them in thy heart. 10. You are the valiant men who have won over the kings of the earth not with pointed arrows nor with sharp swords, but with the power of the cross you have turned down he deception of the devils. 11. Again, blessed are the persecuted, the martyrs slaughterd in the hope of Him, for instead of the sorrows they had borne and affliction they sustained they inherit the kingdom and the life, which

_

41 —

do not pass away. 12. Why art thou busy with uselessdesires, wake up hence (forth) and standing sing praise13. Behold, the time for repentance (so) that every one may return from his wickedness before the time will pass away and there will be no chance for repentance; and that thou shalt not repay us according to our wickedness. 14. Why didst Thou, O Lord, stand at a distance and turn away Thy eyes (lit. look) at the time of affliction? 15. As the leaves that fall off from trees men (fall off) from life and whenever the death blows thou art not confident that thou shalt escape. 16. How straight is the door and (how) narrow is the way that lead to the (heavenly) Kingdom. 17- As the hart that panteth after a fountain of waters so also my soul crieth to Thee, O Lord. 18. W hy do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the ancients? 19. If such is the case between man and wife it is not becoming to marry (to take a wife). 20. For as the lightning proceeds from the east and is seen till the west so shall be the coming of the Son of man. 21. For, the Lord of all is above Christ as the blessed Apostle s a i d : " G o d is the head of Christ". 22. Good will happen and blessed is he through whose hand it will come; evil will happen, but woe to him through whose hand it will come. 23. Everything shall be subjected to Christ except His Father, Who subdued everything to Him. 24. Because, as long as the (Holy) Spirit is with the man the Satan fears to approach him. 25. We do not think that anything did rest on the Sabbath day except men and beasts, which were under the hand of subjection of labour. 26. I prayed before the Lord my God and confessed and said, "I pray Thee, great and terrible Lord God who keepest covenant and grace to T h y friends who observe Thy commandments, we have sinned and have acted perversely . . . . " 27. He was neither conquered by the flower of youth nor led away by the companionship of boyhood. 28. There is a great gulf between you and us; neither any of you can come to us nor any of us (can come) to you. 29. Alas, thy death, and alas, thy separation, my son and my 4

— 42 — beloved. 30- Woe, my son John, woe, my beloved, how will I look at thee, I do not know; woe to me, my beloved John, woe to me, my beloved. 31. O! divine power that gave him this son of blessings. 32. Ah! my son, ah! the son of my womb, and ah! the son of my vows, thou shalt not give thy might to women and thy ways to the suburbs of kings. 33. If I (will) go there will be great fear, and if I (will) stay there will be dread; if I go I will remember my faults, if I stay I must be a stranger. 34. And if Moses wrote the names of the tribes on tablets of stones that they may enter for a perpetual commemoration before the Lord you write the names of your departed (ones) on the host (which is) filled with life. 35. If all his charity is as it is, who is this (one) and what are his defects that thou mayst remember them? 36. If, Our Lord, the end of the world will approach, let the end be according to Thy mercy. 37. Unless the Lord had been my helper my soul would almost have dwelt in miseries. 38. If thou desirest to be perfect, go, sell thy property and give to the poor, and thou shalt have a treasure in heaven. 39. For, if it (Sabbath) was between death and life and between iniquity and righteousness to those just men, whose name I have mentiond above, Sabbath was given to them so that they might observe (it) and live. 40. And those very canons we have followed, some of us by constraint of necessity, and some of us by (good) will. 41- And some of the saints they destroyed (killed) with sword and others they commited to burning by fire. 42. O! Son of God, let Thy compassion be an intercessor for my debility (ie. for me who am feeble) and let it speak sweetly with you on my behalf; let it speak mourningly with you for my concealment (for me who am in concealment) "by Thy grace give life to this man although he is unworthy''. 43. For the wicked there is no one to remember them before the Lord, because the Holy Spirit is far from them, because they are with animal soul and naturally (i. e. like animals) they are juried. 44. Some were baptized and became Christians,
