INS of omission and of commission in this book are better known to the author than they can be to any user. The author is neither a trained bibliographer nor an experienced copyist. He has had no sufficient chance to examine the books in any large library except that of the Harvard Law School. A few weeks in London and in Cambridge, a day in Oxford and in Washington, an hour in Manchester and in San Francisco, have been supplemented by the kind assistance of the librarians at the Columbia Law School, the New York State Library, the Henry E. Huntington Library and Art Gallery at San Gabriel, and the Library of Congress in Washington. With no qualifications and few opportunities, it may be asked why did the author attempt the task? The answer is simple if not sufficient; because no one else "had done it or seemed likely to do it. The work claims no scientific merit; it is only a check-list by which those who handle law-books of the period may estimate their wares. In the first chapters, an effort has been made to give enough of the title-page and colophon of each book to identify it. The collation also is only for the purpose of making sure of the whole text. Size, type, and contents, so important in a scientific bibliography, have been omitted. An attempt at further identification has been made, however, by reference to the devices reproduced in McKerrow's "Printers' and Publishers' Devices in England and Scotland" and by reproducing in an appendix the most important woodcuts not found in McKerrow. In the fourth chapter an attempt has been made to date the books, especially in the case of the printers Pinson and Tottel. This is the only contribution which the author has attempted to make to knowledge of the subject; and the dating is of the most tentative sort. The table is at once an index to the books and an attempt to indicate the places in which each may be found. This is sadly incomplete, especially for books, other than Year Books, printed later

than 1550. An effort has been made, however, to make the list complete for the libraries in which the searcher is most likely to find what he seeks. Three men are chiefly responsible for the upbuilding at the Harvard Law School of its collection of these old books: James Barr Ames, in whose honor the Foundation which is publishing this bibliography was organized, my dear old master, wise and foreseeing, who loved the past as it was the builder of the present, who fostered the collection of these historical monuments of our law; John Hines Arnold, librarian under whose skilful and sagacious administration most of the books in that library were gathered; George Dunn, who devoted his life to collecting a remarkable library of these books which on his death came to swell the Harvard library.
