YEAR IN FOCUS 2010

First-class documentary coverage of the events that shape the natural world, the intrigue of global geopolitics, the battles for supremacy in sporting arenas and the ever-changing face of fashion and celebrity.   In sport we attend not just the major showcase events – like the Vancouver Winter Olympics, FIFA World Cup in South Africa and Commonwealth Games in Delhi – but tens of thousands of day-to-day sporting contests around the world. We provide the most comprehensive sport photographic coverage available today.  Whenever a news story captures headlines, our photographers are there. We went to Haiti in the wake of the devastating earthquake, to Pakistan where floods displaced 20 million people, to the continuing war in Afghanistan, to the slopes of Iceland’s volcano and the oil-soaked beaches of the Gulf of Mexico.   Our unrivalled team of entertainment photographers are at all the best parties and key events – behind the scenes, on the red carpet, invited for exclusive shoots with top celebrities. Their pictures can grace the pages of magazines, newspapers and online publications within moments of being shot.  The images on the following pages represent a mere fraction of our coverage of the year. Our thanks go to all the photographers for their wholehearted commitment to pursuing pictures that tell the story. We would also like to extend our gratitude to Canon, our main photo equipment provider, who helped to support this book.

EARTHQUAKE, HAITI A massive earthquake struck Port-au-Prince on 12 January,

reducing the crowded capital to rubble and killing up to a quarter of a million people. The destruction was ‘unimaginable’, said Haiti’s president, René Préval, the day after the quake. But worse was yet to come. The country’s shaky infrastructure – including most of its medical facilities – collapsed, and the government proved too weak to organise reconstruction. Six months after the quake, only 28,000 of the 1.5 million people displaced had been rehoused. One year on, Port-au-Prince remains a city of ruins and tents and open sewers – the perfect conditions for cholera to flourish. clockwise from top left A

OIL SPILL, Gulf of Mexico For BP, according to its former boss Tony Hayward,

the blow-out on the Deepwater Horizon was a ‘Black Swan’ – ‘the ultimate low-probability, high-impact event’. With no adequate contingency plans in place, it took more than three months to contain the spill – long enough to allow some 4.9 million barrels of oil to pour into the Gulf of Mexico.

COMMONWEALTH GAMES, DELHI

An army of workers – among them children – laboured to make Delhi ready for foreign visitors to the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Many were paid below the minimum wage and endured degrading, dangerous conditions: at least 100 are thought to have died during the build-up to the games. Cheap labour continues to underpin the construction boom in a city that is expanding at a phenomenal rate. Over the next 10 years Delhi – current population 18 million – is expected to grow a further 40 per cent.

FOOD CRISIS, NIGER Of all the countries affected by the deepening food crisis

in West Africa, Niger is suffering the most. After erratic rains, cereal production fell by a third last year, and large numbers of livestock starved as villagers resorted to using animal fodder to feed themselves. Increasing numbers of young children are acutely malnourished and at risk of irreversible brain damage and stunted growth. At the same time, levels of emergency aid have dropped as resources have been consumed by other natural disasters in Haiti and elsewhere.

The pilot UNICEF-sponsored scheme provides families with at least one child under the age of two with child-specific nutritional supplies and cash – $40 a month – to buy provisions at the market. 13

FOOD CRISIS, NIGER In the last two weeks of June, around 4,000 animals starved

to death in the vast Gadabeji reserve in Central Niger. Meat traders bought the carcasses for a fraction of the usual rate – emaciated animals hardly make for prime cuts – and much of the meat was cooked on the spot and shipped to neighbouring Nigeria.

Floods, Pakistan In August floods swept over a third of the land mass of

Pakistan and displaced 20 million people. In the immediate aftermath, many rescue workers were frustrated when people refused to be rescued without their livestock. However, for families in abjectly poor rural areas, an animal often provides the only source of income to fund schooling and buy essentials such as clothes. It provides them with a small measure of control over their lives and, with this, dignity.

MedeVAC, Afghanistan Fighting in Afghanistan has intensified following the decision to send in 34,000 additional US troops, and more dead and wounded are being pulled off the battlefield than ever before. Air ambulance teams such as Task Force Shadow are responsible for evacuating combatants and civilians alike. From March to the end of October, medevac crews from the US Combat Aviation Brigade flew more than 2,000 missions, evacuating 2,500 patients – more than double last year’s rate. More than 540 NATO troops – around two-thirds of them from the US – have been killed in Afghanistan this year, making 2010 the deadliest year of the war.

Death of a soldier, Afghanistan India Battery’s mission was to defend

a 2.5km area surrounding Forward Operating Base Zeebrugge, a few hundred metres downriver from the Kajaki Dam. The Taliban controlled the outlying area, and when the marines wanted to engage them, they would patrol near the boundary.   The plan was pretty simple. A squad of marines would go out to an abandoned compound near the front line and act as decoy, drawing the Taliban into a firefight. Once the fight began, another squad would launch a surprise attack from the flank. Before a single shot was fired, Corporal Jorge Villarreal stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED) and was killed – the third member of his battery to die in this way on this deployment.

Corporal Eckert was walking point, searching for IEDs with his sniffer dog, a black labrador named Bee. Corporal Villarreal followed behind, double-checking the terrain with a metal detector. They came to a dry riverbed about 50 yards from the compound. The dog failed to pick up the scent of the hidden explosives. Villarreal failed to pick up a signal with the metal detector. A moment later he stepped on the IED’s pressure plate, detonating the bomb. Tourniquets were put on on Villarreal’s mangled limbs and four marines carried his stretcher to a helicopter landing zone about a kilometre away. The rest of the squad followed. The 22-year-old, known as ‘V’ to his friends, died about halfway to the landing zone.

volcanic eruptions In April the eruption of a volcano in Iceland sent a thick

plume of ash over much of Europe, emptying the skies of planes and causing prolonged travel chaos – but no loss of life. By contrast, the eruption of Indonesia’s most volatile volcano, Mount Merapi, has killed more than 300 people to date. The initial eruption on 26 October occurred less than 24 hours after a tsunami struck the Mentawai islands on the western end of the country, killing 509 people.

Redshirt Protests, BANGKOK

A fortified encampment of ‘redshirts’ – anti-government protesters – brought Thailand’s capital to a standstill for six weeks in April and May. As the army moved in to break up the encampment, the protests turned violent and the city became a battlefield. The redshirts support Thailand’s former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a military coup in 2006.

Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics

Our coverage of this event involved a team of 55 people including photographers, editors, technicians and support staff. Over the 14 days of the Winter Olympics, our photographers shot nearly 500,000 frames, which were skilfully edited down to 22,000 for our website. Every day, within minutes of capture, images were sent around the world to magazine, newspaper, broadcast and online editors, ready for publication. The following pictures show just a few of the greatest moments from the games.

2010 FIFA World Cup

Held in South Africa for the first time in its history, the world’s greatest football extravaganza never failed to capture headlines. Whether the story focused on players, fans or the incessant drone of the vuvuzelas, each day offered countless tales of elation, shock, disappointment, achievement or surprise. Our team for the tournament shot over 650,000 frames, which were edited to 36,000 for our website. The following pages show a selection of some of the best. Obituaries

The obituary is of course quite literally, the story of all human life. 2010, like any year, has brought with it the passing of folk from the whole gamut of endeavor: icons and achievers, dreamers and heroic failures, fast-laners and slow-burners, the revered and the reviled. Yet whatever the personal biography tells us, the visual document is more than ever at the heart of the human story.

AnniversarieS 100 years: The Race to the South Pole

A century ago the Terra Nova expedition (1910–1913), led by Robert Falcon Scott, set out to be the first to reach the South Pole. The expedition has since become a byword for tragic heroism – a courageous battle against extreme adversity, which ultimately ended in failure. Scott was beaten to the pole by the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, and he perished along with the rest of his party on the return journey. Photographer Herbert Ponting joined Scott’s winter camp. His extraordinary glass plate images capture both the alien beauty of the landscape and the physical challenges faced by the men. 100 years on, they remain a fascinating testimony to the strength of human will and endurance.

100 years: Birth of Hollywood When film director D W Griffith stumbled

across some California real estate in 1910, little did he know it would one day serve as shorthand for the dreams and aspirations of millions. 2010 marked 100 years since the cameras of the Hollywood movie machine began to roll – a century of celluloid glamour, glitz and high drama.

40 years: Jimi Hendrix

Died on 18 September 1970, aged just 27. In the space of four short years he had produced a full career’s worth of music and innovation. He seemed to have arrived fully formed, with an indelible image – an unmistakable silhouette and a mesmerising style that captivated fans and photographers alike.

30 years: Death of John Lennon One of the greatest songwriters of the

20th century would have turned 70 this year, and 2010 also marks 30 years since his life was cut short on the corner of a New York street. Progressing from a Beatle who took the world by storm to a passionate campaigner for causes, it’s impossible to say what direction Lennon’s career would have taken next, but it’s his music alone that ensures his place in the pantheon of pop culture.

65 years: Liberation of Auschwitz

On 27 January 1945 Soviet forces entered Auschwitz concentration camp and liberated the remaining 7,000 prisoners, who were mostly ill or dying. The SS had begun evacuation of the complex weeks before, forcing 60,000 prisoners to march 60 kilometres west to Wodzisław – some 15,000 died en route. At least 1.1 million people are thought to have been murdered at Auschwitz between 1940 and 1945.   “Let us remember that we are on the site of the most gigantic cemetery in the world, a cemetery where there are no graves, no stones, but where the ashes of more than one million people lie.” Polish Culture Minister Waldemar Dabrowski

60 years: Korean War 1950–1953 (armistice) 60 years ago

this year skirmishes over newly carved borders on the Korean peninsula escalated into full-blown military conflict – a proxy war with US and Sino-Soviet forces backing opposing sides. An armistice was signed after three years, in 1953, but the war has never officially ended, and relations between North and South Korea remain as poisonous as ever.

Getty Images Archive is delighted to have the work of British photographer John Bulmer as the latest addition to its roster of historical documentary coverage. Bulmer worked briefly at the UK’s Daily Express newspaper before joining the ranks of The Sunday Times Magazine, sharing the credit for its first ever colour front cover with David Bailey. Bulmer gives us a disinterested and gritty vision of ‘swinging sixties’ Britain, where some may have partied hard but most simply got on with the grind of daily life. Though he worked as a photojournalist for only a few years before turning his eye to filmmaking, he leaves us with a lasting document of a Britain in change.

Hedrich Blessing Since its founding in 1929, Hedrich Blessing has documented

the myriad forms arising from the architectural ferment of 20th-century Chicago and the rest of the United States. Hedrich Blessing’s ability to translate modernism’s innovative architectural spaces into photography’s two-dimensional format gained it the trust of noted architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Holabird & Root, and generated images every bit as masterful as the buildings they depict.
