P R EFACE

For the purpose and scope of this project, for its title as well as for the criteria and arrangement of the manuscripts listed or described, I refer to the prefaces of the previous volumes. The present volume is the sixth and last of the work. It continues in its first part Volume V and completes the supplement for Italy (G- V) and the Vatican. T h e second part of the volume contains supplements for the other countries. These supplements are based on recently published new catalogues, and on the communications received from many scholars and librarians. I am afraid that from now on I shall no longer be able to include additional information. Also some recent reference works, and especially Ludwig Bertalot 's Initio Hu­ manistico L otino (of which the last volume has not yet been published), have

not been fully utilized by me for the identification of anonymous texts. I am f ully aware of the limitations of my work and of its numerous gaps and errors, and I hope they will be corrected by younger scholars . I must be grateful that, in spite of my advanced age, I have been allowed to ca rry the work up to this point . The sixth volume, like the fifth, will appear for the time being without an index . These indexes are in preparation, and they will, I hope, be published in separate fascicules without too much delay. They are being prepared and su­ pervised , in consultation with me , by Mrs . Judith Wardman. I must also apologize if this volume , more than its predecessors, reflects the law of diminishing returns , and includes a large percentage of manuscripts that are at best marginal to the original scope of my work, or even fall entirely out­ side of it. My excuse is that many of the collections described are little known, and I decided to call attention also to items that may be of interest to other scholars rather than myself. The preparation of this volume, as that of the three preceding volumes, was made possible by a substantial g rant from the National Endowment for the Hu­ manities, and by a fellowship from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation . The climate of public and academic opinion has not improved since I described it in the prefaces of Volumes IV and V. The obsession w ith faddish ideas and the contempt for solid scholarship have not changed, and the general antihistorical trend has even increased. Most people are only concerned with contempora ry history and politics, and serious historical studies have gradually decreased or even disappeared from secondary schools, and more recently from colleges. As a result, also in Graduate Schools many historical subjects that require the knowledge of foreign languages, of philological and other skills, have attracted fewer students and scholars than in the past . I have thu s begun t o wonder whether a project a s ours, designed to broaden the basis for a field that is steadily shrinking and declining, will continue to serve its pur­ pose.
