PREFACE This primer has been prepared to teach the skill of reading to the Tausug people of Sulu, The Republic of the Philippines. An eclectic method is used. In essence, each new symbol is taught by means of a key word and then drilled in drills and story material in the same lesson. The primer is designed to be used with its accompanying teacher's guide.. The symbolization of the Tausug alphabet is as follows: a, b, k, ch, d, g, h, i, j, 1, m, n, ng, p, r, s, t, u, w, y, Glottal stop is not written between vowels or word initial. It is written with a grave accent ( s ) word final. Adjacent to a consonant within a word it is written with a hyphen (-). The above symbols closely represent their counterparts in the National Language. Lois and Seymour Ashley, members of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, prepared the primer.

Literacy Committee Summer Institute of Linguistics Nasuli, Malaybalay, Bukidnon, Philippines

Introduction to the Teacher's Edition of Hinda Itik This edition of the primer Hinda Itik includes specially prepared teacher's material which is interleaved between the two pages of each of the thirty-three lessons of the book. The material is in outline form and is intended to be used by the teacher as a guide in the presentation of the lessons to the students. Each outline gives essential information concerning the particular lesson with which it occurs, information such as the keywords, new letters, new syllables, capital letters, and sight words, as well as drills involving these items. There are also directions in each outline for teaching the story and for teaching the writing of each new letter found in the lesson. In addition to the interleaved outline material accompanying each individual lesson there is also a separate section of teacher's instructions at the first of the primer where four representativelessons (lessons one eight, fifteen and seventeen) are given in detail. These instructions to the teacher tell the teacher step by step just exactly what he or she is to do and say at every point in teaching the lessons. The teacher's "patter" (actual words to be spoken by the teacher) is written both in English and in Tausug. Further details include anticipated student response and instructions to the teacher regarding blackboard and flashcard exercises. Since the instructions for teaching lesson one are to be used as the model for teaching every lesson in the book, it is suggested that the teacher acquaint himself or herself early with the instructions and "patter" for this lesson. As each lesson is taught the teacher will discover the new keywords, new syllables and new letters, etc. all outlined conveniently in the interleaved outline in the exact order as they are to be taught, but the teacher will need also the "patter" and instructions how to goabout teaching this outlined material. For this, he or she will need to refer back to the separate section of teacher's instructions and specifically to the lesson one instructions, making, of course, the proper substitutions of new material to be taught, in place of the old material already taught in lesson one. Hence the importance of mastering as soon as possible the instructions and "patter" for lesson one. Wherever the "patter" for a certain lesson is substantially different from lesson one because of differences in drill material etc. , then lesson one instructions cannot be used as the teacher's model for the entire lesson. In these instances the teacher will be directed in the outline material to refer to one of the other instruction models (either eight, fifteen, or seventeen) for instructions and "patter" on how to teach that particular material which is different in type from lesson one.

Since this primer Hinda Itik has been developed in accordance with relative frequency counts of letters and syllables and in accordance with the principle of introducing a limited amount of unknown material in the context of previously taught material, it is vital that the graded and progressive order of this primer be followed closely, and further that the teacher ensure that his or her students master each lesson before proceeding to the following lessons.
