INTRODUCTION
This volume, modest though it may be, represents the contribution of Hungarian archives, academic libraries and museums to the large scale undertaking of rendering accessible sources relating to the history of the developing countries. The explanation of the relatively modest size of this volume is to be sought in some of the peculiarities of Hungarian history. For many long years from the early 16th century onwards, Hungary was engaged in a continuous struggle for independence. The restrictions on her sovereignty in this period are most marked in thefieldof external relations. For this reason, the sources for her relations with distant countries and continents before the midnineteenth century are scattered and almost accidental in their relevance. As a result of the Compromise of 1867, Hungary and Austria became co-equal members of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. However, Hungary did not pursue an independent foreign policy even after 1867 but acted through the common Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Vienna. Nonetheless, sources relating to the history of foreign countries andremotecontinents began to accumulate in the archives of Hungary. Since the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy had neither colonies nor colonial undertakings of greater importance, there are no archive groups created as a result of political dominion and economic dominance of distant lands. Thus, the archival sources created in Hungary between the date of the Compromise and the dissolution of the monarchyrelatechiefly to economic, political, cultural and consular relations maintained with other sovereign states and colonial territories. After the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in 1918, Hungary's foreign relations were controlled by the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs through its own gradually developing network of overseasrepresentation. This change brought in its wake a considerable quantitative increase in the archival materialrelatingto developing countries, but this quantitative growth was not matched by a qualitative growth in the value of the subject-content of this material. In this connection, the increase in economic and commercial intercourse between nations from 1918 to 1939 is more clearly reflected than in the period before 1918 in the archives here listed relating to the export and import activities of private commercial and industrial enterprises. It would not have been sensible to have extended this Guide to several volumes in view of the comparatively modest amount of material, somewhat unevenly distributed geographically, in Hungary of relevance to this project. As more than half the material listed relates to the countries of Asia, the Guide appears as a single volume in the Asian series although it contains sources relating to other continents. A further structural peculiarity is that the amount of detail that can be given depends in large measure upon the extent to which archive groups are arranged on a subject basis. Generally speaking, detailed descriptions of business archives are given, whereas in other cases, e.g. the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, descriptions are more general. The Guide lists and describes items which are single, individual units or have a particular relevance and value. The descriptions of the records themselves are supplemented by notes on the history and functions of organizations and institutions which have produced appreciable quantities of archives. These notes always appear the first time the organization or institution appears in the Guide. An alphabetical index of countries figuring in the volume is intended to make its use easier. The countries or territories are designated in the Guide with the names by which they figure in the sources. We hope to makeresearchesin the latter easier thereby. As a matter of course in the index, references are made to the divergent denominations of today as well. The material contained in this volume has been supplied by the following archives, academic libraries and museums:
