WOODBRIDGE LECTURES A t his death in 1940 Professor Frederick Woodbridge left a bequest to Columbia University for the purpose of bringing distinguished philosophers to the University from time to time and for making their lectures available through publication. T h e importance of this work lies not in the work, though the labor has been long, but in the subject matter. W h e n one surveys the beings of earth and sky, past and present, the visible and invisible, the intelligible and the unintelligible, the moving and the timeless, and then reflects on how the brightest stars in all their twinkling and how light itself on all its travels remain asleep, unimpressed by this overwhelming company, one begins to sense the privilege man has of being awake to so much of the world and of being able to wonder how much more may be going on unknown to him and how much more the past and future hold in store. One shrinks to speak above a whisper of "what there is" in the world and one does not dare to say "totality." One is tempted to stare at the incredible void and fulness in which man plays his little part. T o orient himself, to make a useful map of the realms of being, seems a useless, impossible venture, especially now that the world, perhaps even the physical universe, is expanding at an explosive rate. T h e excitement of being awake in such a world makes it difficult to tell the plain truth. T o be awake is problematic enough, but to try to tell in an orderly way how these sleeping beings all

around us manage to be, and also how they have managed to bring man into being and into an awareness of being, this seems too fantastic a tale. However, the attempt on man's part to orient himself in the world is as old as history, and apparently older. Each generation goes at it afresh, producing little of enduring worth, except that each generation has a little better sense of the magnitude of human ignorance. T o conclude from all this that existence is meaningless would be evidently false; to hope that ontology may become a science seems wishful thinking. Ontology is the investigation of what it means to be or not to be. Analytic ontology presupposes that there is a substantial body of information on what there is and what there is not, and it accepts such facts as its starting point in trying to determine what can be said about being in general. N o science tries to do this, each is preoccupied with its particular instruments of search and field of vision; but together they provide reliable knowledge about many kinds of being. This makes it possible for ontology to take its modest place among the sciences, and without claiming to be a science, attempt to discover whether there can be a "science of being as being," to use the formula which has come down from Aristotle. W h a t can be said about the ways in which various beings happen to be? And can this be said systematically without going beyond the limits of a factual inquiry? Long before Descartes played with the so-called ontological argument as a mathematical toy, Aristotle had made a re-

markable beginning in analysis by
observing,
instead
of
arguing, as follows: The varieties of essential being are indicated by the categories, for things may be said to be in as many ways as there are categories. Thus we say what there is, or what kind of being, or how much, or how related, or how it is acting and reacting, or where it is, or when; and these must all be ways of being. The question that has always been asked and is still being asked today, the ever-puzzling question, "What is being?" amounts to this: " W h a t being is primary?" Some say unified being, others say diversified being; some say finite, others say infinite. . . . Primary being is thought to belong most evidently to bodies; as illustrations we point to animals, plants, or their parts, also to fire, water, earth, and the like, or their elements and compounds, or to the heavens, stars, sun and moon. . . . But some hold that the surfaces of bodies, their planes, lines, and points are more primary than their solid substance. Others think that only sense-objects are primary. Still others think that there are eternal beings, more in number and of finer nature than sense objects. 1 This search for the primary way of being led Aristotle into what some have called his ousiology. H e subordinated the doctrine of ontological categories to the doctrine that of all the categories the primary one, the one that came closest to telling the peculiar "thisness" of any being as being, is the category that tells " w h a t " it means to be that particular individual being. "how" of being to the "what" of being. This shift turned out to be fateful, for few of his followers have turned back to the "how." Few have recovered Aristotle's initial concern with the verb "to be" but have taken for granted that the primary problem is to find out "what" it means to be a being (being as a noun). A renewed concern with the verb "to be" has come as a result of the existentialist concentration on human existence. It has been a commonly held doctrine in both East and W e s t that man is to be conceived in terms of his toil and suffering, his cares and anxieties, and that his natural being is "brutish, nasty and short." Such doctrines called attention to "how" man is, and his behavior during the twentieth century has reenforced them. This preoccupation with human existence has crowded out of interest the more general aspects of being; but gradually a so
