My research in China was generously supported by the Rockefeller Foundation International Relations Fellowship, the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Scholarly Communication with the People's Republic of China, and the University of California-San Diego. My colleagues at UC-San Diego provided a stimulating, supportive environment in which to work out my ideas about communist political institutions.
