INTRODUCTION

This edition comprises new transcriptions of the great Isaiah Scroll (1 QIsaa), with photographs and a bibliography. The transcriptions were created from the leather scroll itself which is housed in the Shrine of the Book of the Israel Museum, Jerusalem and from three different sets of photographs. The transcriptions were then checked against enhanced computer images of the John C. Trever negatives, which were scanned into digitized format at 400 dpi on an Agfa Arcus II scanner. The computer images were manipulated and enhanced by use of commercial imaging software (Adobe PhotoshopTM), to illuminate difficult-to-read characters. A histogram, created for darkened areas of the scroll, provided a measurement of 256 shades of gray (pixels), which shades were then diminished or enhanced to provide the best reading of the characters. Todetermine the correct reading several characters were enlarged, zoomed at approximately 300 per cent their actual size. Litde pixelization occurred. The following illustration, representing the left half of lines five through eight of column twenty-two, demonstrates the clarity and integrity of the Hebrew characters after zooming of the digitized image has occurred.

INTRODUCTION

The goal of this edition of the transcriptions is to represent the text with the greatest possible accuracy; most emendations by different scribal hands are indicated. It does not, however, indicate all the technical details regarding the corrections. For example, in I QIsaa as weH as in other scroIls, when the scribe reaches the left margin at the end of a column, he occasionally writes letters above the line or below it or even vertically downwards. Some editors have reproduced these letters exactly as they were originally written. In this edition we have not indicated this technical detail. We have no intention to replace the photographs. Rather we have recorded only details of textual significance. Moreover, such photographic reproductions occasionally misled scholars to understand these letters as additions. Other technical dctails, such as scribal marks, the precise measurements of the horizontal spacing between the words, the vertical spacing between the lines, and the exact placement of the scribal interlinear and marginal corrections are not reproduced. These may be seen or cxamined by viewing the photographs. Letters that have final and nonfinal forms (~El:lD~) are reproduced as they appear in the scroIl. Doubtful cases are marked with a horizontalline over the character (15). Extra spacing and special signs in the seroll mark various divisions in the text. The extra spacing is reproduced in the edition. At the end of lines, where the spacing is not always clear in the edition, the letter V (=vacat) is used. Spacing is indicated in this edition only when deemed originally intended, excluding cases ofholes or fault in the leather. Some editors have indicated such spacing even where there is an obvious fault in the leather, not distinguising bctween technical and textual facts. The special division signs of the seroll are indicated by P (=paragraph). It is occasionally not clear at the end of some lines whether aspace for division exists or not. In some cases the scribe either uses division signs or fills up the line with dots or other means. The latter cases are indicated in the edition by "no P." Notes concerning the readings are provided at the bottom of each column. Superscript a, b, or ein any given line of the text refers the reader to the corresponding reference in the note section below the column. In those cases where the note refers to a single word, the letter is placed after the discussed entry (axxx), while in those cases where the reference is to more than one word, the letter appears twice, circumscribing the discussed entry like quotation marks (a-xxx XXX-a). A running he ader presents the column numbers as weIl as the numbers of the chapter and verses, as used in standard translations. Each of the sixty-six Isaiah chapters and their verses are indicated throughout the text to assist the reader. Every fifth line number has been inserted along the right margin of the column, also to help the reader. The following signs are uscd in the edition: ~
