A note on the original text This publication is a facsimile of an original manual written in 1883 by ‘an Old Housekeeper’. It was first published by A.H. Massina and Co., a Melbourne publisher located at 26 Little Collins Street East. The company was originated by Alfred Henry Massina, who turned to printing in the 1850s after an unsuccessful stint on the Victorian goldfields. Massina’s sons, William and Henry, joined the family firm just before the publication of The Australian Housewives Manual. The identity of the Old Housekeeper remains a mystery. At the time the book was published, unsigned contributions were commonplace in publishing and many authors wrote under the pseudonym of ‘Anonymous’ or added only a set of initials after a work. Some of the greatest literary writers of the day, such as George Elliot and Lewis Carrol, wrote under a nom de plume. It is impossible, though, not to wonder who the Old Housekeeper might have been. The Australian Housewives Manual was originally intended for readers living in Victoria and the connection with Melbourne is telling. In the 1880s Melbourne was a booming town, larger than most of the capital cities in Europe. Speculators and financiers were buying up market gardens and orchards at the city’s edges and building large new suburban estates. Everywhere, it seemed, people were moving in and setting up house. Throughout the original publication and included in this fascsimile are advertisements for Melbourne retailers selling household wares, including James M’Ewan and Co., seller of stoves and cookware, Herbert Fenton, a dealer in china, glass and earthenware, and William Radford, a tinsmith specialising in baths, washing coppers and other domestic utensils. Many of these retailers were located within walking distance of the publisher. The advertisements and illustrations that appear in the original publication have been supplemented with images from the collections of the National Library of Australia. The details of these images are listed at the back of this facsimile.
