But I can't draw the body... practicing doesn't help me improve, it only makes me more uncomfortable...

Many people may be uncomfortable when drawing the body in portrait illustrations, and may become defensive. I used to be bad at it...I used to mass produce only bust-up pictures.

Who doesn't like to draw bodies? I don't know where to start. I don't know how to practice in the first place. I can only draw a stick figure and cannot draw a posed picture. Do I have to study anatomy? ...It seems tedious and difficult. Is drawing or croquis necessary?

I am sure that each of you has various problems...etc. I am sure that all of you reading this article are brave enough to take the next step toward I think they are the people. From here on, I would like to share with you how I became less concerned about drawing the body, and on the contrary, how I came to like it, and how I practiced and felt that I improved.

This is only a practice method, not an explanation of "how to draw".

Dirge.

Thank you for your understanding in advance.

Dirge's Croquis Footprint & Summary

1. The best way to practice drawing the body is to use figure croquis.

First of all, in conclusion, it is most effective to continue to draw portrait croquis. The reason. Dirge.

As follows.

I can paint in a short time. ...to paint the whole body. Easier to lower the hurdle to drawing the body

It can be painted in a short time. Speaking of croquis, this is the most important thing to be able to draw in a short time. Being able to draw in a short period of time means that the hurdle to draw is mentally lowered, which leads to an easier approach. When we say "short time," the time limit may vary from person to person, but we have looked into...

What is Croquis? The term "quick sketch" refers to a quick drawing of an object, or the drawing itself so drawn. It is also called a sketch, but a drawing made in a particularly short time (about 10 minutes) is called a croquis. It is mainly used as a training to quickly capture moving objects such as animals and human bodies. Also, the finished work In some cases, the work is done as a study for sublimation into a Citation:Wikipedia

I vary the time depending on the purpose: 1 minute or less, 12 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes.

♦ Within 1 minute...only lines that capture the impression (movement vector) ♦ 12 minutes...stick man ♦ 5 minutes ... Simplified fleshing out with cubes, cylinders, etc. ♦ 10 minutes~...clothed croquis

Thus, time limits are divided according to objective and difficulty level. We do not keep to a strict time limit. Even if the time limit has passed, we will continue until the work is complete. However, we stop the timer once the time limit has passed and check how far we have gone. The time taken to complete the work will also be recorded. I think that there are some people who will just let the ones they couldn't draw in time pass and move on to the next one. However, this leads to the mass production of only half-finished works, and the number of deliverables does not increase. If you leave a pose that you are not good at or that is difficult to draw unfinished, you will not improve, right? Even if the time limit has passed, I just quickly check what I was able to draw within the time limit and then restart the timer to complete the work to the end.

When you get used to croquis, it would be best if you could look

back and see which parts of the brush you had trouble with... which parts you found difficult. Dirge.

A minimum of one minute and a maximum of 10 minutes is the first step in handling the volume of material. What if this was not a croquis, but a normal practice of drawing a single person, following every detail? What if it took 30 minutes to an hour to finish drawing one person...or even longer? What do you think? 1 croquis (5 minutes) x 12 croquis = 1 hour 1 normal person practice (2 if you try your best) = 1 hour That's a difference of 6 to 12 times, right? Isn't that a huge difference in quantity? If it were a stick man, the time limit of 12 minutes would make more of a difference in the amount

of material...

I used to spend 30 minutes to an hour to practice drawing one person, so now I think it is Dirge.

overwhelming with croquis. The difference in quantity is chilling...

Of course, if you are drawing a single person as a finished work, not as a practice, take as much time as you like. It only means that for practice, we recommend a croquis with a large amount of material.

The whole body is to be painted. Of course, if you constantly draw full-body poses in croquis, you will get used to drawing bodies. Even if all you do is draw stick figures. Adding a cube or cylinder to the stick figure makes it more human-like. The stick figure is, so to speak, the "core" and most important point in drawing a human figure. If you can draw a stick figure in a natural pose, after fleshing out the figure, it will eventually transform into a human being in a natural pose.

✓ point What to watch out for in stick figure croquis Is the length and size of the head and each part correct? Is the angle of each part correct? Vary the degree of compression and positioning of → lines (arms, legs) and ellipses (head, rib cage, pelvis) I can sort of see how it works. When drawing a stick figure, at the very least, keep the above points in mind. If you do so, I believe you will be able to draw a stick figure that is closer to a human being.

In this age of digital drawing, it is not an absolutely necessary practice since it can be easily edited... but it is a good practice for analog people to do...

♦ To draw so that the whole body fits neatly on the paper. What beginners tend to do when they try to draw a full-body painting is to fail to fit the paper size. I drew it too small for the size of the paper. I couldn't fit my whole body in there. Have you ever experienced this? This is due to the fact that the head of the person is not drawn with the head height in mind. How big should the head be in relation to the size of the paper so that the whole body fits together in a balanced manner? If you practice while thinking about this, you will acquire the ability to draw people in the size you want.

The hurdle to drawing a body is easily lowered It is okay to draw only stick figures at first. If it's 12 minutes, it's a product of a few minutes. It wouldn't hurt or itch if it failed, would it? Because the time required is short, even if you make a mistake and cannot draw the pose you want, you can easily give up. It is not hard to draw the same pose in succession. Because it is easy to give up on failure, you can easily try poses that you are not good at. As a result, it is easier to lower the hurdle to drawing bodies.

I couldn't draw it well...oh well. One after another Dirge.

Oh, I've drawn 10 sitting poses that I'm not good at without knowing it! I'm a stick figure!

The mental weight of a failure drawn in an hour is completely different from that of a failure drawn in a few minutes. By doing a large amount of work in croquis with little mental weight and lowering the hurdle to drawing the body, the drawing ability of the finished work will gradually improve.

2. The kicker that I really met croquis. I had some croquis experiences in the past, but to be honest, I did not feel that I had improved at all. At that time was just to finish it in time.... There is no correct way to draw croquis, or any kind of indicator, and it would be pointless to practice. And I even thought about it.

↑↑Not a croquis, but here's what the body drawing level looked like at the time The pose is stiff and exudes unnaturalness. Dirge.

The overall balance is not there, but only the details are doing their best...

I am such a person, but I realized the importance of croquis after I came across a YouTube video.

It is a channel run by an animator called hide channel. I happened to discover a video called "Simple Croquis," in which he draws 8-9 bodies in about 10 minutes, and I watched it. I used to draw by following the outline of the body, not knowing how to draw, but Mr. hide drew all the parts of the figure in simple shapes such as cubes, cylinders, cones, and spheres. Still, the movement looks natural, the lines are simpler and easier to understand, and above all, the angles (angles) of each part are easier to understand! At this time, I found an indicator for the croquis and poof! A light went on in my brain! Dirge.

At first, we set the HIDE-sensei's video to slow motion setting and practiced how to draw each part while watching the teacher's hand. After that, I tried the same method, actually looking at the posed pictures and drawing them. What do you think? Umm? Learning how to draw has made it easier for me to draw, and most importantly, it has changed the way I observe posed photographs. [Croquis 2021.

In addition, we found another teacher in late 2022. The first gesture drawing with 10 percent power" (in Japanese) This is a book by Dr. Sugar Owl. The kicker for this was also on YouTube, where I was looking for posed videos at the time. Then I found a channel called GESDRAWParty and learned that there was also a still image website, which I used as a reference for croquis poses. At first, that was all I did, but after a while, I picked up a book that caught my attention at a bookstore, and it was a croquis book based on GESDRAWParty's models.

I read the book and found it interesting and fast-paced, and I immediately bought it Dirge.

because it contained new knowledge that I did not know.

In this book, I learned to "value impressions. Instead of drawing what you see, what part or line of the pose gives you a strong impression? I learned that just by drawing lines with this in mind, I could exaggerate the movement and make my croquis more lively.

I can draw just the impression lines in less than a minute per body, so I can draw a lot of stuff with ease. Dirge.

In this way, the croquis learns how to draw more efficiently and simply, rather than just somehow drawing in time I think the more you put it into practice, the better the results will be. *A practical review article of the book "Drawing with 10 Percent Power: Beginning Gesture Drawing" will be posted in a later article.

3. Learning anatomy is not enough to draw a body! This is true. Dirge.

Experience speaks.

I am by no means opposed to learning anatomy, rather I believe it is important knowledge for portraying the human figure. However, we would like you to be careful not to learn it in the wrong order. I went to a junior college of medicine for three years to study anatomy, kinesiology, and other specialized knowledge in order to qualify as a physical therapist. During my time as a student, I had no time to paint, so I hardly painted at all. When I became a working adult and had more time to spare, I decided to paint. I felt that my aversion to drawing the body had decreased a little... because I was able to notice anatomically unnatural parts of the body by looking at my own past paintings and those of others. At that time, I thought, "After all, anatomical knowledge is important to draw the body!" I thought. Dirge.

Because I could actually draw it to a reasonable degree of visibility.

[2018 pencil illustration]

When I look at them now, I think that I could not draw the bodies...but at the time, I thought I could draw them fairly well. In fact, there were many similar poses and frontal angles that I could not draw because I was not good at them. At the time, I had the inertia of "I can draw okay, so it's okay. I had the inertia to say, "I can draw just fine," and I did not pursue my difficulties very much. I realized the reason why I could not draw the body only with anatomical knowledge through the videos of Mr. Hide and Mr.

Sugar Owl.

It was after I came across his book. I was crocking and finally... finally realized it! (Really, it was too late to notice) Muscle is a so-called covering, not a foundation. Muscles themselves are just lumps of meat, attached to bones and maintaining their shape. When the bone moves, it expands and contracts, and its shape changes depending on the angle from which you look at it. It is impossible to draw such a complex object without a foundation... So at the time, I was only drawing poses that were a hair short of a frontal stick figure...

Dirge.

I just had the illusion that I was able to draw, but in reality I was only drawing standing pictures that were not very well angled. This was partly because I did not know how to add muscles to the poses from various angles, but also because I was trying to draw the stick figure, which is the foundation of the pose, in a fleshed-out state without drawing it in the first place.

To use an analogy, it is like trying to draw a clothed person without a bite! Dirge.

Muscle is a detail, like clothing. Since it is a muscle with a foundation (a stick man), it is not a muscle with a foundation (a stick man). When I started croquis, I realized that it is not knowledge that should be acquired in

✓ point 1) Be able to draw various angles of posing with stick figures (2) Be able to flesh out the stick man with simple figures such as cubes and cylinders.

It is not too late to start working on anatomy after mastering these two processes.

It is not slow at all! In fact, if you don't draw revealing clothes, you may not need it. It is s u f f i c i e n t

to practice on a person's body in this way and study anatomy when

you finally feel the need to do so. For example...] I would like to learn about muscles because I often draw hands, arms, and legs exposed. Just!!! Before you start croquet, there are a few things you should know.

4. What is the first piece of knowledge to be learned in the practice of body drawing? Human body ratio Joint site

Although it is possible to draw a human being without knowing his or her muscles, it is important to learn the proportions and joints of the human body.

ques tion What does a human being look like? What do they look like?

How would you answer?

One head, two arms, torso, two legs... Dirge.

Suppose I were to answer this way. I'm sure there would be other, more serious answers...

If we draw the above answers as they are, various patterns will emerge as shown in the image below.

What do you think? All this is just changing the ratio of each part. ...I wonder which ones look human? As you can see, only a change in the ratio can make a mysterious creature. When drawing a stick figure, try to keep the proportions of a human being. That is the first step in drawing a stick figure like a human being. It is. The ratio of each site is also a means of indicating gender and age.

For example, I drew (3) and (4) with human proportions, but you can see the age difference, can't you? Dirge.

The proportions of the human body are more important knowledge than learning about muscles. This is because it is necessary knowledge when drawing a stick figure. Another thing to learn is about joint sites as well as human body proportions. I don't think it's too much...the body doesn't bend in places that are not joint sites.

Knowing the location of each joint and the range of motion (range of movement), if available, will help you draw more natural poses.

company will be able to provide a good service to the market.

5. Dirge's croquis footprint & summary Thank you for reading this far! From this point forward, we will show you our croquis footprint by year and our current croquis practice with videos. ◇ 2018

Not a crock, but again as a comparison...

◇ 2021~1st half of 2022

It was around the time I came across Dr. HIDE's videos. Tools: Pencil (B~2B), eraser

◇ Late 2022 - 2023

It was around this time that I came across Dr. Sugar Owl's book and incorporated stick figure croquis. Tools: Brush pen, millipen (0.1)

Since late 2022, he has been drawing with a millipen and a brush pen. I had been drawing with pencil (sometimes digital) until then, but after the change, I became more resigned to failure. As a result, I can draw crisply. In clothed croquis, it is hard to draw a single stroke with a brush pen, so I used a millipen to get a bite of the stick figure and then used a brush pen to draw the stick figure. The main line is drawn with a pen.

There are still many useless lines, but I would like to continue practicing so that I can gradually improve my observational accuracy and draw the shape I want in one shot. The first half of the following YouTube video shows the actual drawing for reference.

Ἲ¨[2023.1.9 LIVE] Highlights

summary Croquis is the best way to practice drawing bodies (it allows you to do a lot of work). Anatomical knowledge (muscles, blood vessels, and other details) is the last thing to learn. The first thing to learn is human body proportions and joint locations (plus range of motion). Continue croquis, even if it means slacking off!

It does not have to be every day. Once every two days, once every three days... Even if it's a little busy and it's only once a week. ...we've been estranged for a month! That is still fine. If you can return and try again properly, there is no problem. Keep on croquis even if you have to pause in between. You will surely find more poses that you can draw!

Let's take a relaxed approach to croquis without being overzealous.
