were preferred by different communities. On Sicily, imports were apparently restricted to small fine painted vessels (such as three handled piriform jars and alabastra), which were possibly containers for exotic substances, such as perfumed oils or drugs. In the Tyrrhenian region, on Lipari, on Vivara and at Antigori on Sardinia, a wide range of shapes and types of imports occurred, ranging from coarse unpainted wares to fine drinking vessels. The latter appear to have formed the predominant part of the assemblage on Lipai. On peninsular Italy, large storage jars (possibly containers for oil and wine) com prised the majority of imported wares, with fine painted small vessels present in small numbers. Secondly, the contexts in which the imported vessels are found also differ. On Sicily, the imports are exclusively found in burial contexts, wheFe they appear with local pottery, amber and faience beads and metal objects. In the western islands, the imports were spread widely throughout the settlements, and were not reserved for tomb use. On peninsular Italy, the large storage jars and some smaller vessels were found spread widely throughout the coastal trading sites. However, small fine containers were also deposited in tombs. The evidence from Sicily suggests elements of a 'prestige goods economy', with access to imports, which apparently were considered high status goods, restricted to certain members of the community. Such limited access does not seem to fit the pattern for the Tyrrhenian islands, which suggests that most members of coastal communities had access to imported wares. On peninsular Italy, two spheres of exchange involving imported pottery seem to have operated. Imported pottery was available to most inhabitants at the major trading nodes, but small fine containers were treated as high status objects for tomb use at some sites which perhaps were not in direct contact with the Aegean traders. Although the data are rather limited at present, increased information from excavations now in progress should help us to under stand "how traded items are involved in internally generated strategies within societies" (Hodder 1982b, 204). Some of the most interesting questions raised by a study of Aegean trade and interaction in the West Central Mediterranean concern the different classes of pottery found on the sites which show the greatest evidence of contact between the two regions. The Aegean imported pottery itself presents many, as yet unanswered, questions. The precise source of origin of much of the imported wares is still unknown. The majority appears to be Mycenaean, but both scientific and stylistic analysis suggest a variety of regional sources in the Mycenaean world, especially by the 13th century BC. Characterization studies which could discriminate between Aegean pottery production centres would greatly help to clarify this problem. Much more scientific analysis also needs to be done to distinguish between local copies and genuine imported wares. The analyses so far carried out indicate that local production of Aegean type pottery. was a common feature of many of the major trading nodes. Information is so far largely lacking concerning the types of imported vessels which were copied locally. Could such information indicate not only aesthetic preferences, but also suggest how imported pottery may have been incorporated into indigenous social and economic strategies? Only recently has the importance of ceramica grigia 165
