Itis mind-boggling to think that the cinematic universe we've built at Marvel Studios justifies an entire timeline book, but after 30 films, eight series, four phases, and an Infinity Saga, it felt ike the right time to attempt a project lke this. More importantly, it is something our fans have been asking us for! This book is not just anin-Universe chronological order of events; this book exemplifies the thought and care that all of us here at Marvel Studios and the storytellers we work with—directors, writers, actors—have put into imagining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it exists today. When we were working on /ron Man, we didn’t have a map built out that stretched all the way to the far reaches of the Multiverse. We wanted to tell a great story about one character, hoping that if it worked, we might just be able to do a few more, and ifall the stars cosmically aligned, we could assemble the Avengers in a movie. That was the bet we were making when Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury appeared in the post credit scene on Iron Man. He could have easily been speaking directly to us, when he said, “Mr. Stark, you've become part of a bigger universe. You just don't know it yet.” Universes have a way of growing, Like Marvel's comic books, the MCU is a creation of collaboration, home to hundreds of artists and storytellers. Like all of us, our onscreen heroes are all deeply human. They doubt, they grieve, they fight, and then they pick themselves back up, they forge new bonds, they celebrate. They have people they care about, and families we have watched them build, whether it’s a wise-cracking raccoon and walking tree, or the sibling you're constantly at odds with, or the guy you keep lappingat the Lincoln Memorial. Across multiple movies and shows, we watch these characters come together to create something greater than the sum of their parts.

And each of these movies and shows is created to share those connections with you, making the whole bigger and grander and more dimensional. Every detail—every story beat, every piece of armor, every location—has been thought about and built by our filmmakers and the Marvel Studios team, who live in these stories sometimes for years. The result, we hope, is an immersive world that fans can return to time and to visit with characters they know and love, experience stories that are both exciting and moving, and explore places that are fantastical yet familiar. As the team was pulling this book together, we went through multiple scenarios on how to present this timeline in the best possible way. We quickly realized that the real authority on these matters is the Time Variance Authority or TVA, which we introduced in Loki. As the guardians of the Sacred Timeline, they would be the ones who would notice when things don't quite line up. And like the real universe, the Marvel Cinematic Universe can also be a little messy in parts. Fortunately, we have Miss Minutes who will pop up throughout the book whenever we have one of those Multiversal glitches, and to provide more context.

On the Multiverse note, we recognize that there are stories—movies and series—that are canonical to Marvel but were created by different storytellers during different periods of Marvel's history. The timeline presented in this book is specific to the MCU's Sacred Timeline through Phase 4. But, as we move forward and dive deeper into the Multiverse Saga, you never know when timelines may just crash or converge (hint, hint / spoiler alert). The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to grow—it's growing as | write this for now this is the history of the MCU unraveled from end to end. tis a story | have been lucky to be a part of for over 20 years. Hey Yall! 'm Miss Minutes, and welcome to the guidebook on the beings and events that make up the universe known, as 616, also known as the Sacred Timeline. Here at the Time Variance Authority, our job is to keep tabs and protect the countless timelines that weave together our Multiverse. Some of these have ‘small differences, like altered lunar cycles or events happeningat slightly different times, or big ones—like everybody being made out of paint! Now, 616 may bejust one thread in this vast Multiverse, but trust me, it's a wild one!

To help navigate key events along the way, when possible, we've marked them by seasonsin Earth’s Northern Hemisphere. Why there, y'all might ask? Because that's where the Avengers are, silly! As we make our way down the Sacred Timeline, you'll even see some folks from this reality hoppin’ over of those crossovers were to other timelines for a visit. For a long time, some allowed, and we didn't interfere. But every now and again somethin’ does go wrong, and in the old days would step in to prune the branch, restoring it to the proper flow of time. We don't do that anymore! We wanna be honest here, so now and then I'll pop in to point out temporal disruptions in the timelines! Ooo, doggy! Just remember, this isn't everything that happensin 616, much less the Multiverse—we're always trackin’ this vast, evolving story. Given the fluidity of time and space, and the infinite expansion of the Multiverse—and our paperwork—we're always playing catch-up, so we appreciate y’all's patience and understanding! Vast leaps are needed to traverse the period of time from The Big Bang to what's known on Earth as the 20th century. Vaulting forward through the chronology is part of that journey, but a degree of informed guesswork about certain events from long ago is also necessary, since the further away these incidents are, the harder it is to see them clearly.
