s we were putting this School Security-focused issue together, the Texas House approved legislation to provide funding to improve school security, including provisions to install silent panic buttons in each classroom and an armed security officer at every Texas K-12 school. This comes just about a year after the Robb Elementary tragedy in Uvalde, Texas. Much was learned in the aftermath of that tragedy, and the Texas Education Agency (TEA) has worked diligently with schools throughout the state to understand where the shortfalls are in security, while working with lawmakers to bring about change through school security legislation. These efforts, supported by communities like Uvalde who have had to go through the unthinkable, are trying to initiate real change to the way we, as a society, look at school security and safety. “I think it’s great that they’re brave enough to take these steps,” said Guy Grace, who served for 30 years as the director of security and emergency planning for Littleton Public Schools in Colorado. I spoke with Grace for my School Security feature (see page 24) on the latest updates to the Partner Alliance for Safer Schools (PASS) Guidelines. While Grace is quick to give Texas educators and lawmakers credit for taking swift action – allocating funding, creating minimum standards, doing audits, etc. – he urges Texas school leaders to take the proper steps when enacting certain provisions within this legislation. For example, with an armed guard at every school, proper training, funding and support for these armed guards will be essential. With the silent panic alert buttons, it is important for schools to fully understand that technology, as well as the top companies that provide those solutions, including the network they use to communicate, such as Bluetooth, so that the wrong solutions don’t end up in place. Guidance and education on this will also be key to a successful rollout. Allocating funding so schools throughout Texas can at least reach a minimum level of security is a good step, and Grace urges school leaders to take advantage of great free resources such as PASS, a nonprofit formed in 2014 to provide school security and safety guidelines to school administrators, school boards and public safety and security professionals with a road map for implementing a layered and tiered approach to enhancing the safety of school environments and a tool to prioritize needs. “We’ve got to give Texas credit for doing this, but I must emphasize that we can’t neglect the key security pillars because those locks, those classroom locks, your cameras, your access control from the perimeter all the way to the classroom – those are tools that will help protect,” Grace asserted. Classroom Locks 101: Best Practices and the Future of School Security Safety for every student and staff member, in every situation, every day.

chool safety and security concerns are on the rise for students, teachers and parents. A 2022 Gallup poll found that 44 percent of parents of K-12 students fear for their child’s physical safety at school. These numbers peaked in correlation with school shootings, the highest being 55 percent directly after the Columbine High School shooting. One in 5 parents also reported their child expressed fear for their safety at school. While these numbers are alarming, school shootings are anything but common and should not be the only concern for parents, students and school staff. When panic is created around such tragic events, schools may take measures that are rushed and potentially unsafe. Administrators should also consider weather-related emergencies, fires, bomb threats, bullying, vandalism and other possible non-fatal

incidents when choosing and assessing their school’s safety components and procedures. The goal is safety for every student and staff member, in every situation, every day.

The traditional approach to classroom security

One approach for school safety can be as simple as a locked door. Security experts and PASS, the Partner Alliance for Safer Schools, agree that classroom doors should be closed and locked whenever students are in the classroom. Traditional Classroom Function

The main reason traditional classroom function locks are no longer best practice for classroom doors is they require staff to open the door and potentially expose themselves to danger during emergency lockdown. The locking function only operates from the exterior side. Additionally, a keyholder must be present and able to quickly access keys to

Classroom and Storeroom Locks

Traditional classroom function and storeroom function locks that limit locking and unlocking control to staff no longer meet all current best practice guidelines for school security. Those guidelines include: • Ability to quickly secure the door from inside the room by any occupant in an emergency; • Solutions that meet the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA)

lock the door. Th is may result in the loss of precious minutes that can make all the difference in emergency situations. Students may be alone in the classroom during an emergency. Without access to a key, they cannot lock the door. Since it can be disruptive to continually let students into the classroom while the door is closed and locked, a staff member may decide to keep the door in passage mode, which allows it to be unlocked all the time. Unfortunately, this means that unauthorized people can also enter the classroom, unless the teacher is able to reach the exterior of the door and lock it in time during an emergency. This use of passage mode also goes against the guidelines to keep the door locked when students are in the classroom.

In addition to a keyed outside lever, a thumb turn or push button on the inside can lock or unlock the outside lever. The inside lever remains unlocked at all times, allowing occupants to exit at any time. Benefits:

free egress in emergencies and must be accessible in alignment with national accessibility standards. The traditional classroom function lock was designed in a way that only allows the door to be locked and unlocked from the outside with a key, and no locking function on the inside handle. The lock may be placed in “passage mode,” which allows it to remain unlocked on the outside. In the event of a lockdown, a keyholder would need to open the door to lock it, potentially exposing the classroom to danger. Another common approach to classroom security is the storeroom function lock. Unlike the traditional classroom lock function, this lock, was designed to always be locked, where a keyholder must be present to allow passage through the door. This type of function leaves no room for error in a lockdown but can create disruptions to the school day where frequent egress is needed, and the lock can’t function without a keyholder present. In this article, we’ll explore why the traditional classroom function and storeroom function locks are no longer recommended to support the current classroom environment in schools. Instead, there are three improved alternatives aiming to balance security and convenience for students and staff, from daily security concerns to emergency lockdown situations.

Unlike the traditional classroom lock, the classroom security function is locked from the inside of the classroom with a key. Teachers do not have to exit the classroom in order to lock the outside lever; the locking function can be accessed from both sides. The inside lever always remains unlocked to allow free egress as required by code.

Like the traditional classroom function lock, the storeroom function lock is always locked on the outside and allows free egress from the inside. However, unlike the aforementioned lock function, there is no passage mode to allow entry. Instead, someone from the inside of the classroom must let people in each time they approach the door. Th is makes it tempting for schools to use door props or aftermarket frame magnets to create a makeshift “passage mode” to keep the door unlocked, both of which may not align with best practices. In a recent event, frame magnets were one of the ways many teachers prevented doors from locking so that students could go in and out freely, despite school and district policies to keep doors closed and locked at all times. Some teachers reported they only used magnets temporarily, while others stated keeping track of the key was inconvenient. For example, as noted in the 2022 Interim Report by the Investigative Committee on the Robb Elementary Shooting, teachers would remove magnets and lock the doors only when the school district’s police officers would do routine checks to ensure the school complied with policies. Additionally, the use of magnets keeps the latch bolt from extending, which may weaken the latch springs over time and negatively impact the performance of the lock.

Gymnasiums, auditoriums, media centers and other areas where students learn are also classrooms and may require different hardware solutions.

Since the door doesn’t have to be opened to access the locking function, this style of lock allows for a safer method to lock than the traditional classroom lock. And since the locking function is controlled only by a key, there is less risk for unauthorized people to lock the door. This can help deter bullying, vandalism or other behavior that may occur when a student is able to lock the door. However, this function isn’t without its drawbacks. Since a metal key must be used to lock the door, a keyholder must always be present and able to access the key and lock in time. It can be difficult to secure the classroom in the event of an emergency, especially if students are alone in the classroom for any reason and do not have access to a key. Some jurisdictions may not allow this door function. When weighing your choices, consult your local codes.

Entrance/Office function

The entrance/office function lock is versatile and important for emergency lockdowns. It can be used on several different types of interior doors, but in a classroom sett ing it can make a huge difference in emergencies.

In addition to a keyed outside lever, a thumb turn or push button on the inside can lock or unlock the outside lever. This means the door can be easily locked by anyone close to the door; the keyholder doesn’t have to be present. The inside lever is unlocked and allows free egress regardless of the locked status. Because the door is freely locked from the inside by anyone, not just the keyholder, quicker actions can be taken in lockdown emergencies, if someone can access the door to press the lock button or turn the thumb turn. Keys for substitute teachers don’t necessarily need to be provided so long as a staff member is able to let the substitute in. Since anyone inside of the room can easily lock the door, it’s important to consider the associated drawbacks. Students may take advantage of this feature, creating the opportunity for student-led violence, vandalism and other mischief provided they can lock themselves in the room—and the teacher or staff member may not have access to the key. However, it’s important to note that with the right training, according to the Safe and Sound Schools safety toolkit, students as young as 4th grade are empowered to act during emergencies.

You may consider integrating electronic locks with other recommended lock functions. When used on classroom doors and tied into a centralized access control system, electronic locks provide a streamlined lockdown procedure within seconds. Classroom occupants do not need a key or even need to be near the door for it to lock. Instead, the lock is controlled remotely. All connected doors can lock in seconds with a central command and notifications alerting a lockdown can be issued to staff. These locks are also useful in areas that can benefit from being on a schedule, like a locker room. Of course, the inside lever always remains unlocked, allowing free egress. Additionally, electronic locks provide greater monitoring ability, leaving

less room for error. Real-time monitoring can confirm whether each door is closed, latched and locked. Any door connected to an electronic lock will be visible in a centralized system and help to control unauthorized access. Finally, staff no longer need to worry about issuing or keeping track of keys to their classrooms. Instead, credential technology allows instant management of who may access each door and when. Cards, fobs and PIN access can all be used with electronic locks. Substitutes can be issued a temporary card or other credential. If a physical credential is lost, it can be instantly shut off in case it falls into the wrong hands. Access history may also be helpful in knowing exactly who accessed a certain room and when, possibly preventing vandalism or other unauthorized activities.

If budget is tight, indicators may be an initial way to begin upgrading security. Depending on the manufacturer, indication may be able to be added to current locksets using a conversion kit. This provides a low-cost option for classroom security.

Streamlining an AD-400 Series Installation Major Manufacturing jig makes a big school system job much easier

T

oday’s project involves installing Schlage AD-400 Series networked wireless locks, using the Major Manufacturing HIT-66 280 jig. Th is versatile integrated lock is one of the hottest components on the market for school systems right now. Options include multi-card PIN factor authentication, multi-technology open architecture solutions, 900 megahertz wireless capabilities and much more. Because this is a big job, we needed a full crew: myself, John Nolan and Aaron with Reliance Security and Josh Westmoreland who works with me. (Photo 1) We had quite a few of these locks to install. (Photo 2) This was a big project and took a lot of manpower and tools. In preparation for installing all these locks, we set up a cart with a lot of Milwaukee pack-out tools and drills set up with difPhoto 2. Quite a few ferent drill bits we would need locks to install already attached. (Photo 3) Before starting the installation, the first steps were learning about the locks and the tools needed for installation, starting with the Major Mfg. HIT-66 280 Template for the Schlage AD-400 mortise lock. Photo 4 shows the hinge pocket. We’re taking the Major Manufacturing instructions and breaking them down and showing how those instructions are applied out in the field. The first step is to install the mortise lock positioning plate. This plate will fit into the 1 -1/4-inch

cylindrical lever prep or the mortise body. We’re going to be using all mortise body prep here. Start by drilling all of the holes located by the silver-colored drill bushings. There are a total of six holes. We used the 7/16-inch drill bit and drilled halfway through from both sides. This prevents you from blowing out the wood on wood doors. On metal doors, it’s a little bit different, but you still follow the same drilling pattern. We did both wood and metal. We’re going to continue those 7 /16inch holes for the mounting bolts and mounting locations. Photo 6 shows the other side of the jig on the outside. Next, we drill the three-quarter inch drill locations. You can use a hole saw or they do actually make a threequarter inch drill bit. These holes are for the door position sensor and for the location where we’re going to pull some of the wires through. In photo 7, Josh is using a

In photo 8 we drill the four 3/8-inch holes located around the outside and you’re just about done with the project. We actually had to take the two and a quarter inch hole saw and drill that out. Apparently that was required for this particular application per the manufacturer specifications. Now after we take the jig off, you can see that the door is prepped and

ready to go. (Photo 9) We’ll refer back to Major Manufacturing’s information and instructions before continuing the process in case we missed anything. I could not imagine trying to install this lock without this jig. It would be an absolute and utter complete nightmare. or many of our readers who have been involved with school security, the reports of new shootings are very upsetting, partly because some of the most obvious preventative measures were ignored. When I see videos of a criminal’s vehicle approaching a school, observed, recorded, but yet unchallenged and I see doors propped open or left unlocked, I know somebody missed the point. Even small security upgrades can have a big impact. Many relatively simple and affordable steps can be taken immediately to help protect students, faculty, and staff. Since every facility is unique, school security solutions will vary depending on the site, the budget, and the school administration’s ability to approve critical aspects of school facility security. School Security Checklist

In Texas, a statewide Intruder Detection Audit program requires Texas public schools to undergo random inspections to identify weak access points. These guidelines may be used anywhere for other school districts to follow. The following recommended steps pertain to locks and door hardware and are within the realm of services provided by the in-house or local commercial locksmith. 1. Conduct an audit of all doors. Look for the following:

Perimeter doors: • Are they locked and secure? Are all components functioning properly? • Check the door, frame, lock and door operator/power closer. Classroom doors: • Do the doors have working locks? Can they be locked from the inside? • Are all components functioning properly? • Again, check the door, frame, lock and door operator/power closer. 2. Conduct weekly sweeps of all doors to ensure proper function.

For the new school year, access control procedures should include exterior door sweeps (ensuring doors are closed and locked) at every instructional facility at least once each week while instruction is being conducted. Staff should be fully trained at the start of the school year and any time new hires start work. 3. Review and, if necessary, update access control policies and procedures.

A policy should be in place to ensure exterior doors are closed and locked, so that visitors can only enter the facility through primary entrances.

Staff should be been trained on visitor procedures, including what forms of identification are allowed and when and under what situations are visitors allowed to enter the building Classroom instruction should be conducted with doors locked. Form a multi-disciplinary team to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement of current practices or facility features and conditions. 4. Implement an intruder detection audit program.

Conduct random inspections to identify weak access points, as the State of Texas has implemented. These inspections remind me of the FDAI punchlist, but involve more than just the doors. I like that they’re random; random testing will really keep the team on its toes. A smart selection of doors and hardware can help schools: • Restrict access to authrized individuals • Secure classroom and perimeter doors, and facilitate lockdown • Ensure code compliance including ADA, emergency egress, and fire • Reinforce exterior doors to protect against attackers or extreme weather • Reduce air leakage with energyefficient exterior openings • Enhance facility cleanliness with antimicrobial coatings and touchless or low-touch solutions • Protect expensive equipment, chemicals, medications, and sensitive data with access control

eciding on the best and most effective way to approach safety and protecting students both outside and inside the classroom is a daunting task, especially with the mountain of information, products and advice coming at school systems from myriad sources. Thankfully, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, the Partner Alliance for Safer Schools (PASS), was established in 2014 to bring together expertise from the education community, public safety and the security industry to develop and support a coordinated

approach that can assist school administrators in making effective use of proven security practices specific to K-12 environments. The sixth-edition release — including updates to the Safety and Security Guidelines and the School Safety and Security Checklist — improves on previous versions of the PASS guidance to make it more streamlined, easier to use and more reflective of K-12 schools’ evolving security needs and challenges.

Like Grace, Mark Berger, president of Securitech, a developer and manufacturer of high-security, code-compliant mechanical and electric locking solutions, serves on the PASS Advisory Board, and has spent his career volunteering his time for life safety causes. “Schools are getting bombarded with a billion different people coming at them with this solution, that solution – how do you figure out what to do?” said Berger, pointing to the challenges that many educators face. “So, the Partner Alliance for Safe Schools, or PASS, brings together that needed expertise – manufacturers from different spaces, the electronic side, the physical side – all came together and said, ‘Let’s work on developing a set of guidelines that are a good starting point, or beginning standard for schools.’ ” With so much information being thrown at educators, Berger explained that the PASS guidelines show schools

how to get organized, how to categorize and prioritize what needs to be done in a simple step-by-step process. The guidelines, he said, are designed to help administrators to best spend the limited funds they have as a school, while providing a clear path forward based on information that has been created from past experiences and lessons learned from past school tragedies. “PASS gives you a foundation and then a way to take it up level by level,” he said. “Another thing to remember is that rarely are two schools exactly alike. There is no one-size-fits-all in the security world and especially in the school world. There are multiple doors, multiple locking scenarios, for example, that need to be addressed, and many times it is different for each school.” The emphasis for this edition was on “getting back to basics,” added Grace, who served for 30 years as the director of security and emergency planning for Littleton Public Schools in Colorado. “When we look at building security with the access control and the locks, from the outside all the way to the classroom – that’s the basics,” he said. “Those are the foundations of your perimeter, of your layered security approach. So, if you haven’t done that first step, you should not be out there buying all this other stuff, like the more advanced security solutions and products, for example, which the latest edition of the guidelines addresses as well.” The sixth-edition g u i d el i n es f eat u re more focused best practice recommendations to identif y needed areas of improvement by separating the tier continuum practices that are already required by federal law or regulation or are already uniformly implemented throughout the U.S. For

Cover Focus: School Security example, the new edition has redesignated tiers for clarity, which recommends that all schools and districts work toward Tier One measures regardless of location, budget or risk profile. If Tier One measures are in place, all should work towards Tier Two. Tier 3 and 4 measures may be needed depending on an assessment from the core security team. The guidelines describe approaches within five physical layers for school facilities: districtwide, the property perimeter, the parking lot perimeter, the building perimeter and the classroom/interior perimeter. Within each layer, the resource outlines key safety and security components, such as policies and procedures, people (roles and training), architectural components, communication, access control, video surveillance and detection and alarms.

Classroom Door in Focus

Because the PASS Guidelines look at security from a layered perspective, they enable schools to easily breakdown each layer from the outside perimeter to the classroom itself. For the purposes of this article, we are focusing mostly on the changes in the PASS guidelines around the classroom door, particularly when it comes to recommendations for locks. The new edition includes enhancements to the section on classroom security, and is simplified and updated with current terminology, illustrations and recommendations consistent with modern, code-compliant door hardware and access control equipment. As Ken Cook, Director of National School Safety and Advocacy for Allegion, points out in this month’s Cover story, Classroom Locks 101: Best Practices and the Future of School Security (see story starting on page 10), “traditional classroom function and storeroom function locks that limit locking and unlocking control to staff no longer meet all current best practice guidelines

for school security.” Cook, who serves on the PASS Advisory Council, provides an excellent overview of the current recommendations for classroom locks, which he notes are based on

key guidelines, including the ability to quickly secure the door from inside the room by any occupant in an emergency; solutions that meet the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and fire and life safety codes; ability to quickly and easily gain entry from outside the room by authorized school personnel or first responders with keys or credentials; and visual indicators to show locked or unlocked status. One of the lessons learned from the last edition of the standards is how easily schools were able to override or compromise the traditional classroom function and stroreroom function locks (see page 10 for more detail on these types of locks) via magnets or other methods. “It’s absolutely critical going forward that all occupants are able to lock a door in an emergency,” said Grace. “The evolution of what we’ve seen is that all of the stakeholders need to be empowered, and the way you can do that is by having locks and levers or push buttons that are code compliant.” Grace went over many instances during past school shootings where lives could have been saved if students had had the ability to lock the doors during an emergency. Both Grace and Berger disagree with the argument that

seen makes an impact on students, providing a better sense of overall security and control. “This is something that’s ingrained in me because we have learned the hard way that it’s so important when we give staff and students that ability, that we empower them,” Grace asserted. “It was kind of like a sense of relief for many people because, you know, they were looking at the tools, but it wasn’t just putting the locks on the doors. It was the training and preparing, which are things that need to happen – the processes and procedures are vitally important and is something that you’ll see in the PASS guidelines.”

New Technologies Section

A new Enhanced Technologies section in the sixth edition details solutions under consideration by many schools and districts that show potential for making significant improvements to school safety but may not yet be widely adopted. These include newer technologies in the areas of weapons detection, analytics, emergency communications and biometrics. “There’s a lot of the higher-end technology that keeps getting developed and some great advances in technology that

are proving to be very effective, so the new guidelines help schools make sense of this new technology,” said Berger, who added that he is excited by what he has seen in the areas of predictive analytics software and CCTV systems. “So, for example, you can see someone in the parking lot before they’re getting to the door,” he said. Grace is equally excited about the addition of the enhanced technologies section, noting some of the advancements in analytics and prohibitive items detection as an example. “I have a feeling that section is going to be growing every year because there’s all kinds of new technologies that are emerging.” While both Grace and Berger are excited about all the advancements in security-related technology, they are both quick to say how a school must first get back to basics before even considering higher end technologies. “Before you go and buy those enhanced technologies, ask yourself, ‘did I address all the basics?’” said Grace. “Did I do a risk assessment? Did I implement my locks and my access control? Did I put my cameras in the places that needed them? Those are the things that we’re trying to emphasize with PASS.” Berger added, “There are great advantages in those technologies on the top end. And then from the lock industry point of view, we are leading the cause of protecting students and helping them create a safe space known as the classroom.”

While school tragedies continue to happen at a disturbing and mindnumbing rate, awareness around school safety and security has “improved drastically,” Grace said. “Why I say that is when we put electronic access control in my schools, for example, we reduced our crime rate and incidents of violence significantly. I would love to see a U.S. statistic on that if anybody ever tracked that nationwide, but based on my experience, I think that we’ve had a lot of good things happen from the implementations of these technologies.” But with so much information and technology being given to schools, Grace implores those in charge of making these decisions to do their homework before making any big technology purchase. “They need to educate themselves on what they are going to purchase and bring in their schools because it could be a disaster waiting to happen.” He continued, “Schools need to make sure they are doing it in a comprehensive, holistic way, and they are not doing it in a way that’s turning a school into a prison. When we’re not balanced in that

approach, that’s where we start to create quagmires and problems for schools.” Grace emphasized that schools need to understand that “locks and electronic access control help to organize buildings, help maintain order,” he said. “We need to remember that they are going to need a place where they can have high academic performance, social activities, sports, etc., and that is going to include emergency preparedness and threat assessment and the locks and cameras, for example, but it is balanced.” He added, “There is a strong correlation between safety and security and academic performance.” Schools should be, and often are, the “pillars of the community,” Grace pointed out, the town hub where meetings are held for not only school activities but also community events and gatherings after hours. “Those schools are centerpieces of the community, and we need to prepare them and secure them the best way we can,” said Grace. BEST EHD9000: A Closer Look The dormakaba group aims for durability and ease of maintenance with its latest door closer.

D

oor closers typically are simple pieces of hardware: You install them, make the necessary adjustments and walk away, returning only for occasional maintenance. Unlike today’s increasingly smart locks, door closers are tasked with only one chore — closing a door safely and completely. That doesn’t mean there can’t be improvements, and the latest model by dormakaba group BEST — the EHD9000 Series — has several notable improvements for locksmiths as far as durability and adjustability. “We’re pretty passionate about this product,” says Andrew Adams, assistant vice president of product marketing for door hardware and electronic access at dormakaba Americas. He says the door closer, which was introduced in fall 2022 at the DHI ConNextions show and now is arriving on distributor shelves, is aimed at high-traffic institutional applications but could be applicable anywhere. It was the winner in the Locks and Locking Devices category in the Security Industry Association New Product Showcase at ISC West 2023 in March.

The first thing you notice about the EHD9000 is that it’s a substantial piece of hardware. Adams says the door closer body weighs 10 pounds. That’s because it’s made of cast iron — a first for BEST. (Other models are made of an aluminum alloy.) The cast-iron construction was the main reason behind developing the EHD9000 in the first place, Adams adds. “We evaluate our product portfolio to understand where the product gaps were and, obviously, one of the main ones [was] we don’t have a castiron door closer in our premium brand,” he says, indicating BEST. The EHD9000 not only is a cast-iron door closer, but it also is a single-piece cast-iron door closer. That means there are no weak points, compared with models that might have two pieces of cast iron. “It’s pretty solid,” Adams says. Interestingly, the door closer cover is NOT a single piece but two. This design also was made with

durability in mind, Adams explains, because single-piece covers can be prone to fall off. “We wanted two attachment pieces to ensure that when a door closer is installed in an application, the cover stays on,” he says. The EHD9000 includes similar 30plus arm configurations to what other BEST door closers have, including top jamb, parallel and track. The new door closer also will include self-regulating valves inside the body. These valves help to maintain operation by ensuring the consistent flow of hydraulic fluid when temperatures fluctuate, Adams says.

Spring Size Indicator

Although dormakaba is known for its door closers worldwide, Adams says the design for the EHD900 came strictly from BEST. However, the EHD9000 was able to borrow one feature from dormakaba’s European catalog — a spring size indicator. The indicator shows the setting for the closing force of the door closer on a scale of 1–6, with “1” meeting the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act for accessibility. As you tighten or loosen the th springg adjustment, you can see the indicator in move alongg the scale. That’s cool enough, eno g but what Adams is particularly particu y careful to note is

that the indicator faces the front of door closer, so it can be read easily when the cover is off. In fact, all of the adjustment settings for the door closer, including closing speed and backcheck, are on the front of the door closer. In addition to making maintenance adjustments easier, this placement can save time during an installation. “When you install [a door closer], you aren’t done at that point,” he says. “You have to make sure that the door closing force is appropriate for the application. If you want advanced variable backcheck, you have to adjust it after the door closer is installed.” So, although it isn’t meant necessarily to make the installation easier, front-facing adjustments can save time during an installation. One final thing you might notice about the door closer is it has a QR code printed on it. The QR code takes you to a webpage that has installation instructions for the EHD9000 as well as an installation video, among other pieces of information. “It’ll be the go-to source for all digital content for EHD9000,” Adams says. Mobile Credentials in 2023 Smartphones and new technology opening new doors

G

enerally speaking, your smartphone becomes a mobile credential when it is used as an electronic key, transports lock or key data, or updates standalone locks. In this article we’ll review recent developments, distribution channels and how they affect your pricing and access to various markets. Remember, the marketing triad of quality, price and availability still drives buying decisions.

Bluetooth or NFC?

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Near Field Communication (NFC) are the two current mobile credentials technologies. (Mobile Credentials Make The Connection, Locksmith Ledger April 2022, www.locksmithledger. com/21258512) NFC may already be in place in some educational institutions for student and retail purchases. The NFC protocol transmits 424 Kbits/second, usually after a tap on the terminal or reader. BLE is currently the mobile credential favorite, transmitting about five times faster on the 2.4 GHz frequency, with range adjustable from 2 to 15 feet. New readers (on the wall or in the lock) increasingly accept BLE, NFC, RFID chips, and sometimes Prox cards as well. Older units may need to be upgraded when adding mobile credentials.

Wi-Fi and Wireless

Wireless may be 802.11xx high-speed Wi-Fi, or one of the variations of the 802.15. xx standards. Wi-Fi and Wireless can mean different things. Some products will run on existing 802.11xx Wi-Fi networks, while

Locks or readers can be ordered or upgraded to communicate to the PACS controller over wireless, Ethernet, or hardwired transmission routes. Lock power can come from batteries, Ethernet (PoE), or local power supply. Mobile credentials themselves can sometimes become the network connection to the Cloud via cell towers, or to internal wireless hot spots. Here is a brief update on industry offerings:

Lock manufacturers currently have four major commercial distribution channels. These include: Wholesale lock trade, contract hardware dealers, PACS systems software providers, and Lodging-multi-family housing specialists. Of course, residential products operated by mobile credential apps proliferate on the Internet and in big box stores. The wholesale lock trade is our traditional supply source with many mobile credential products beginning to show up on the shelves. However, since mobile credentials require apps, and may also need cloud or Wi-Fi connections, the set-up may be challenging for some. Wholesale specialists like

s one of the top trends within access control for nearly a decade, the current rise of mobile credentials – hastened by COVID and the changing workforce – has been a slow and steady one. HID’s inaugural 2023 State of the Security Industry Report, examines this “going mobile” trend, including digital IDs, Identity as-a-service (IDaaS), the cloud, biometrics and more. The report gathered responses from 2,700 partners, end users and security and IT personnel across a range of titles and organization sizes, representing more than 11 industries. Digital transformation continues to “exert pressure as the global pandemic accelerated the adoption of cloud technologies across many sectors,” said researchers, noting, “the convergence of these factors means IDaaS is quickly becoming the expectation.” In fact, the identity access management (IAM) market is expected to grow at a 22.7 percent compound annual growth rate to $41.9 billion by the end of 2031. As such, SaaS-delivered identities represent huge opportunities in the security industry, the study pointed out. Interestingly, the study found that the majority of survey respondents (81 percent) are offering a hybrid

work model, with 67 perecent of respondents noting that multifactor authentication and passwordless authentication are most important to adapting to hybrid and remote work, and 48 percent pointing to the importance of mobile and digital IDs. With that said, the survey also reveals almost half of the organizations aren’t quite ready, or need help, in implementing a comprehensive IDaaS strategy. As researchers point out in the study, “prior to the pandemic, digital transformation and the convergence of physical and logical access caused enterprises to migrate more of their access management capabilities to the cloud.” With the majority of respondents offering a hybrid work model, more companies will deliver identity management “as a service” rather than via onpremises infrastructure in 2023, according to the study. Researchers point to the rise of Digital IDs and mobile authentication as a way to propel many more mobile access deployments, noting identification and authentication are more commonly completed via mobile devices, including smartphones and wearables. The growing popularity of digital wallets has enabled smartphone users, for example, to add keys, IDs and digital documents directly in the wallet app, the study noted. These include, but are not limited to, drivers’ licenses in eight states, verifiable COVID-19 vaccination information, employee badges, student IDs and hotel room keys. Not surprisingly, commercial real estate (40 percent) is outpacing other verticals as large commercial real estate firms are leveraging mobile access as part of their larger tenant experience apps, according to the HID survey. The study also looked at the continuing touchless trend, finding that nearly 60 percent of respondents see the benefit of contactless biometrics. LL: Looking at COVID and other factors, what are some of the keys for the growth of digital IDs? Do you see continued growth in this area? Bardhan: Digital ID adoption across industries has accelerated more rapidly than ever before. According to HID’s 2023 State of Security and Identity Report, more than 2,700 end users and partners were asked about the biggest issues that they are facing in their organizations. Digital transformation and modernization are one of the top reasons for the development of this trend. In today’s world, trusted identity is becoming a digital phenomenon and customers increasingly prefer to use these digital identities from passports to student IDs, employee badges and other corporate credentials. The recent shift of consumers demanding touchless, seamless and secured digital credentials has been a big contributing factor. The wide adoption of cloud-based digital IDs that provide simplicity, convenience and innovative capabilities has been instrumental in the growth of digital IDs. Many virtual business models are looking to provide contactless biometrics with modern iris and facial recognition technologies that are reliable and applicable to on-premises and remote authentication with the added bonus of privacy and elimination of unauthorized access and fraud. LL: Is the phone winning out as the credential of choice in this battle for identity that is going on within security? Bardhan: Yes, phones are becoming a top form factor of choice for consumers. According to our 2022 State of Physical Access Control Report, 66% of users have already upgraded to mobile readers or plan to do so, while 41% of respondents say that mobile access would be one of the top features required in a new access control system. The infrastructure to support digital transactions grew during the past two years, alongside the need to offer contactless transactions. In tandem, the adoption of mobile wallet apps that house digital identities on mobile devices also grew. Digital wallets comprised 48.6% of e-commerce transaction value worldwide in 2021, or just over $2.6 trillion. In addition, digital wallets are projected to rise to 52.5% of transaction value in 2025, driven by the popularity of digital wallets from major players such as Amazon, Apple, Google and PayPal. That’s because they make the online shopping experience much easier while enabling users to store multiple payment applications on a single device. Expanded capabilities allow iPhone users to add keys, IDs and digital documents directly in the wallet app. These include, but are not limited to, driver’s licenses in eight states, verifiable COVID-19 vaccination information, employee badges, student IDs and hotel room keys. LL: Please talk about the growth of IDaaS, and what that will look like in terms of creating a revenue model for those

versions of national identity documents. Citizens can use mobile devices to securely request appointments, receive health information and access credentials. Hence, almost all industries have begun adopting this trend.

who offer IDaaS, such as a subscription or recurring service model? Bardhan: The IDaaS market growth has been exponential and the growth of mobile credentials has a close correlation to this. Multiple industry drivers have led to this exponential growth; security, regulations, compliance, privacy, use cases and user experience are some of the top drivers. With increasing (and varying) use cases of digital credentials, revenue models have been reconstructed, and subscription or recurring revenue models offer more flexibility to endusers as they deploy large digital ecosystems. Subscription models also allow customers to pick and choose the types of services/use cases they need in order to hit their organizational goals. Furthermore, with hybrid work environments in relevance today, subscription models allow for activation-based billing where the customers pay exactly for what they use. These options are difficult to implement in perpetual or one-time payment models. Therefore, the industry is moving quickly toward recurring revenue and/or subscriptionbased revenue models. Historically, manufacturer revenue models have been based on one-time hardware sales supplemented with additional revenue streams from consumables and services. OPEX-based revenue models were virtually inexistent as value extraction from subscription models was very difficult. In general,

very few subscription models existed and not too many succeeded with such revenue models, as the industry was slow to adopt subscription and/or recurring revenue models. LL: I see commercial real estate is leading the way in digital IDs. What is driving this growth? What role does the growth of Proptech play? Bardhan: Yes, the commercial real estate (CRE) industry is adopting digital IDs rapidly. According to 2023 HID State of Security and Identity Report, 47% of integrators and installers said their CRE customers are using mobile identities for identity verification. Large commercial real estate firms are leveraging mobile access as part of their larger tenant experience apps. For example, New York City-based Silverstein Properties offers secure contactless access to its office buildings through employee badges in Apple Wallet. Recently, employee badge in Wallet, made its debut in the UK at 22 Bishopsgate; that is the next step in transforming the user experience in a modern workplace. Today’s buildings range from managed, multi-tenant property to a

company-owned headquarters facility with many satellite operations worldwide. In any scenario, it can be difficult to scale access control deployments without large infrastructure investments. Cloud-based digital access control enables integration with a range of access use cases as well as centralized control over property technology solutions. Tenants are offering their employees flexible, multi-location, and hybrid work styles that include work-from-home and in-office hot-desking. They want touchless and seamless access to doors and elevators, and intuitive features and amenities that make their journey to and from the office easier. And the ubiquitous mobile phone has become the command center for their lives, a single device that consolidates both work and life. To achieve these capabilities, those managing the building need a modern digital ready infrastructure that enables robust experiences, mobile adoption across systems, and future-ready, touchless access control. Serving as a “single source of truth,” tenant experience platforms integrate access control, visitor management, building operations (alerts,

maintenance requests, broken elevator, etc.), shared asset management (booking shared rooms or spaces), as well as custom experiences like local dining options, yoga schedules, and café specials with cloud-based credential management. LL: What is the current discussion around data, including storing , protecting and mining that data to create better outcomes and/or efficiencies and savings, for example? Bardhan: There are two schools of thought when it comes to data. There are organizations that have very stringent privacy requirements and are cognizant of what data is stored or shared. On the other hand, there are organizations that trust companies with their data in order to get meaningful statistical analysis around usage, savings, efficiencies, etc. These analytics help organizations with multiple objectives, including workspace management, employee engagement, user experience, etc. It is imperative that organizations make the right choice in data management by offering solutions that are safe, secure and certified. ❚ ❚

Installing a Double-Door Maglock System Attention to detail was essential for this storefront conversion job

his job involves converting storefront doors to a double-door hardwired electronic access control with a Locknetics magnetic locking system. Photo 1 is the before view of the doors. The first step is to tape up the template (Photo 2) so that you get your holes drilled in the correct locations for both the header and the door itself. (Photo 3) Photo 4 shows our little cart loaded with the tools we’ll need today. I love using these little carts because I can easily access all the tools, screws and other items needed to install this electromagnetic lock. We used the supplied Allen head wrench to loosen all of the Allen head screws that are attached to the connecting plate. (Photo 5) This connecting plate (Photo 6) slides in and interlocks with the mag lock after it has been installed on the frame. On the frame, we had to remove the door stop from this top area (Photo 7). This is a thin piece of metal that protrudes down to stop the door. In Photo 8, we use our angle grinder to cut that particular piece out. This is sometimes avoided by using a spacer. However, we could not use the spacer in this particular application. Make sure that you repaint that area so that it looks nice when you’re done. You don’t want to leave a bunch of cut or scarred metal when you leave the jobsite. You want to make sure that it looks clean and professional. Photo 9 shows the plate in its mounting position, the spot where that door stop was removed.

Now we’re going to start assembling and installing the door magnetic pads. (Photo 10) These are solid pieces of metal that go on the door. In photo 11, you can see that the magnetic lock has been attached to the mounting base plate and installed properly. We mounted the door maglock plates to each one of the doors. Photo 12 shows what it looks like from the outside – a round large carriage Bolt is all that’s visible from the outside. Again we have that mounting plate (Photo 13). Start off by mounting the first two screws in the oval slots so that you can slide and adjust that plate in place after it is lined up properly. You can then tighten it down and screw it to its permanent location. Photo 14 shows the touch-sense exit devices that needed to be mounted between 36 and 48 inches on the door. I use a couple pieces of tape to hold the exit devices while we make our measurements. Those lines are drawn on the tape so we do not draw on the door directly. Then we use a quarter by 20 drill tap to drill the door so that we can install those mounting screws (Photo 15). You can use rivnuts if they are supplied. This door was extra thick so we determined that the door being tapped and threaded itself would be enough to hold this particular touch-sense exit device. You can see those screwsas they go into the door right there. (Photo 16) In Photo 17, John Nolan with Reliance Security is dealing with all the spaghetti that’s coming out of the ceiling with all the wiring and getting the wire from the power supply, which is mounted in the ceiling up above those ceiling tiles. (Photo 18). This is called the can or the power supply. Those wires then drop down and power the magnetic locking system and the touch sense bar so that everything can operate together. We’re going to be incorporating our door operator with this as well so we’ve got electronic access everywhere.

» Photo 12. Outside view Now we need to delete or cover holes from the original Alarm Lock unit that was installed here. We start off by using the GKL Products bridges (Photo 19), which slide right into place and cover plates (Photo 20) that cover the mortise hole on each side. There’s a little piece of all thread and you use this little key and it covers up that hole in a very nice, sleek looking system. For covering up additional holes in the door, we’re going to use some nutserts or blind nuts. I like this little kit that uses an impact driver to set them (Photo 21). Now we’re remounting the handles. The hole up above this handle (Photo 22) was too large for our rivnuts or our nutserts. Once the hole is too large, we cannot shrink it, so using a sticker or some other kind of cover will take care of that. Having metal stickers (Photo 23) is extremely vital to cleaning up the door and covering up any unwanted holes or any unsightly portions of the project. We’ve got all the wires tucked away now, everything is run inside the doors and over to the magnetic locking system and we’re tidying everything up. (Photo 24) Two large batteries in the power supply will provide backup power in case power goes out in the building. Photo 25 shows our completed installation from the outside, all nicely cleaned

In the Field: Flagpole Cam Lock Repair A little bit of warm brake cleaner helped get the lock working like new

oday we’re servicing a CompX flagpole cam lock. The customer called and said he needed to get the lock serviced so he could lower the flag to half-mast. The lock, subject lock was full of ice, dirt and grit, pre- to wind, rain venting it from opening. The custom- and snow er said that the lock worked randomly from time to time and they sprayed WD40 in it occasionally. That tells me that they gummed things up a bit and attracted more dirt and debris in the lock. Examining the lock, we used a little screwdriver to depress each one of the wafers and discovered a stuck wafer in the lock. The second wafer from the back did not turn or spring back. We needed to continue to clean this lock, rehydrate it and lubricate it. Notice I’ve put some Triflow into this lock in order to get it moving. This is a heavier-duty lubricant that will coat the brass and some of the other components and be more effective

in the field. A lighter-duty lubricant may not hold up quite as long. The main issue was that we needed it cleaned out so that open space doesn’t have any ice, dirt, debris or other nonsense in there locking the wafers up. This lock had been exposed to Colorado winter weather for some time. Next, we had to put the lock back together. We pulled the Phillips head screw off the backside. This let us pull the entire lock cylinder apart without needing to remove it from the actual little door on the flagpole. We simply put everything back together and now we have a fully operational lock.

A little bit of warm brake cleaner was all it took to get this thing moving in the correct direction. It melted the ice and the snow so that we could begin to service this particular cam lock. All of this nasty stuff – ice, snow, leaves, pollen and dirt – can build up inside a lock that’s not properly maintained, not properly covered and exposed to the weather. It took a lot of cleaning We could have replaced this lock; however, this lock works just fine. One of the things that I was concerned about was perhaps maybe a tumbler got cr ushed, or one of the wafers was bent, or one of the

herever possible and practical, it makes sense to migrate your customers to newer door locking solution technologies. Not only does this approach boost security and safety, but it also offers advantages like energy efficiency and better door management. It also signifies that you’re in sync and up to date with technology, adding value to your business in the eyes of the end-user. Making the switch to electrified openings is like upgrading from a flip phone to a smartphone – once you’ve made the change, you’ll wonder how you lived without it. The good news is that ongoing innovation in the door hardware category makes it the perfect time to start on an upgrade path for your customers. New access control and locking technologies make it possible for property owners, managers and security professionals to upgrade from mechanical locks to keyless, electrified and even wireless options that are ultrasecure and cost-effective. The key is to evaluate the total cost of ownership (TCO) and select the option that best meets the end-user’s needs while complying with codes, regulations or other requirements. Examine not only the cost of purchasing products, but the time and labor to install and maintain/manage the opening. With wireless, installation time and technician labor costs are greatly reduced, but initial costs may be higher. And remember, when you are connected to digital technologies, remote programming and maintenance is also possible, such as rebooting or resetting system power. That’s a big time labor savings.

Put Power to Openings

For high-traffic, high-security openings, an electromagnetic lock or maglock may be the way to go. For those who prefer to reuse their existing mechanical lockset, electrified trim is another great option. And for those looking for the best of both worlds, electrified locksets are increasingly popular.

Tech Tips: Cylindrical and Mortise Lock Servicing Troubleshooting tips to avoid or resolve common issues

ocksmiths are often called out in the field to diagnose and service malfunctioning cylindrical and mortise locks. I know from personal experience that it’s not unusual to end a day thinking to yourself, “Now I’ve heard everything!” Without fail, the next day you’ll find that you hadn’t because someone calls with a new and unique problem. Here are some steps to take to avoid or resolve common mortise and cylindrical lock issues. Determine the exact nature of the issue. A mismatch between the hardware and its proposed operation will often be the root of a service issue. Since you are probably going to use new as well as used hardware, it is best to keep an open mind when approaching the problem door. A lock is only one element of the door assembly, and all the components work together to provide a functioning opening. Check the condition of the door. Is the door in working order? Are parts missing? Has the door or hardware been painted, which prevents its intended operation? Was the door subjected to “blunt force trauma?” That’s an expression they use to describe when the victim has been physically attacked and injured, and it applies to doors as well as people. Such damage can be subtle or obvious, and many times the damage may require replacement of the door, the frame, door hardware, or even the adjoining walls or building structure. Problems often result from the following issues: Site environment issues: Debris, loose parts, and vandalism may be the root issue of the problem and specifically the lock or door hardware. Stacking Pressure: This is created by HVAC systems putting air pressure on a door and binding of the door and the lock latch may result. There are electric strikes designed to operate where stacking pressure

prevails. Door closers may also be installed on the door, or be adjusted to maintain the door in its required zero position. Door/jamb misalignment: When the door jamb “racks,” it distorts and is no longer as plumb or square as it was or needs to be in order for the door to swing and close freely. Latch/strike interference: While the door opens and shuts, the door closer may not have been doing its job to help cushion the shock of the slamming door. Consequently, strike and latches often become damaged and misaligned. Doors being subjected to attempted forced entry will also have internally compromised hardware components which may

Commercial/Residential Hardware not be immediately apparent, or may be intermittent. The technician must be mindful and observant to identify such problems. Door hinge issues: Since the hinges carry the weight of the door, they can show signs of wear or may become misaligned, resulting in the loss of the proper geometry between the door, the frame and the latch, door strike and other door hardware. Sometimes obstructions placed between the door and frame will cause profound damage to the door, the hinge and the frame, and may require extra innings to resolve. If the hinge pockets or door itself were damaged by operating with improperly installed or adjusted hinges, continuous hinges, pivots, and repair components are available, which may help resolve the issues without major surgery. (sorry, another medical metaphor!)

remain tight, apply a liquid thread locker, such as Loctite 243, to them. If the latch does not easily retract and fall into the strike opening, it could be a lack of lubrication, or a gritty latch. Spray a little lubricant, such as Houdini Lock Lube, Tri-Flow or Corrosion Free Formula 8000 on the latch, wipe off any visible dirt or grit and apply a little more lubricant to the latch.

An Expert Weighs In

Locksmith Ledger interviewed dormakaba’s Glen Davies CPL, AFDI, GSA-SVT, learning leader – door hardware, for some expert tips. Following are Ledger’s questions and Davies’ answers. Locksmith Ledger: What are the one or two most important tech tips for installing a mortise or cylindrical lock? Glen Davies: It is usually easier to install the mortise cylinder if the lock case is left a bit loose until after the cylinder is installed. Leaving it a little loose allows for pushing or pulling of the latch or deadbolt to angle the lock case to be perpendicular to the mortise cylinder. Ensure the portions of the mortise lock (BEST calls them trim cassettes) that support the levers or knobs are fully tightened and aligned per the manufacturer’s instructions. Spindle breakage can occur when the center portion of a swivel spindle is unsupported by the trim cassettes. With cylindrical locks, always check that the lock is adjusted correctly for the

» Best 9K for 2-inch door thickness of the door. If it is not adjusted properly, a lock-out or lock-in situation could occur due to the latch disconnecting from the lock chassis. Lock-ins have led to lawsuits and could be deadly. LL: What are the one or two most important tech tips to keep in mind when adjusting a mortise or cylindrical lock? Davies: Do not overtighten the trim or through bolts. Screws and bolts need to be tight, but not too tight. You could crush a door or the trim by tightening too much. If the screws or bolts will not

Applicable standards are ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2017 American National Standard For Mortise Locks & Latches and ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2017 Bored And Assembled Locks And Latches. These standards establish the performance requirements including dimensional criteria, operational tests, strength tests, cycle tests, security tests, material evaluation tests, and finish tests. Tests described in these standards are performed under laboratory conditions. In actual usage, results vary because of installation, door and frame construction, maintenance and environmental conditions. Manufacturers are also required to indicate the Grade level of their locks. Locks shall meet all tests for their grade listing. For example, a Grade 1 lock shall meet all Grade 1 criteria. A locking device may not perform as expected if the grade or function do not match the installation environment. It’s important to use the hardware supplied by the manufacturer to install the lock for the particular situation (examples: wood, hollow metal, concrete, indoor, outdoor exposed to the elements). If the hardware uses external electrical power, confirm that the power is within the device’s requirements as it relates to AC/ DC, ampacity, and allowable min/max levels. ❚❚ Tim O’Leary is an experienced security consultant and a regular contributor to Locksmith Ledger.

In his article “The Evolution of Pushbutton Locks,” Jerry Levine wrote, “Looking into the future, the pushbutton lock will continue to provide key free access for both mechanical and electronic entry and utility lock applications.” While that’s still true today, the trend has shifted towards locks that can be operated touchlessly and via smartphone apps. Another June 2013 article described the Schlage Touchscreen Deadbolt and Nexia Home Automation as the wave of the future. Tim O’Leary outlined the training required to become a certified fire door inspector. O’Leary also offered tips for conducting an effective site survey. Allegion’s Lori Greene explained code requirements for stairway doors. ASSA ABLOY launched its Security Professionals Showroom, which still makes the rounds at industry events. Joseph Vaida, Ingersoll Rand (now Allegion), wrote a Problem Solver column titled “Selecting the Right Door Hardware for the Application.”

Hugh Curry reported on Net Changer, a cash handler safe by Corporate Safe Specialists. Shelomo Barkan showed the merits of his ISM high-security safe line. Locksmith Mike Foty took on the job of opening a Blue Diamond safe, which was equipped with an outdated Bell sidewinder cam lock. IR explained their LockLink Express software, which manages electronic access platforms. Tom Gillespie wrote an informative article on the basics of interchangeable core cylinders. Rod Oden explained the outcome after the Best Lock Corp. vs. Ilco Unican lawsuit in 1996. A chart listed key blanks and code series used by large trucks. Jerry Levine installed a Kwikset Ultramax pocket door lock. Tim O’Leary checked out the AC-Q44 access control system by Rosslare. Gale Johnson reported on the heavy duty Bianchi 104 key duplicator.
