THE COMPLETE GARDENER HIS GARDENING IDEAS AND HOW TO PUT THEM INTO PRACTICE
TONY HAMILTON
W
HEN GEOFF HAMILTON died in 1996 he left the legacy of Bamsdale, his
lovely garden in Rutland. Over the years he had created more than a dozen special gardens for his television series - the Cottage Garden, the Ornamental Kitchen Garden, the Water Garden, and of course, the Paradise Garden, to name just a few - which are still beautifully maintained for Bamsdale’s many visitors. Geoff’s twin brother Tony has written a wonderful tribute which brings Geoff’s ideas and philosophies - both of gardening and of life - into sharp focus. He delightfully describes how the small boy in short trousers who made his own fertilizer in the garden shed became the campaigner for organic gardening methods and how Geoff loved nothing better than to build his own potting benches and garden seats: he was a great advocate of relaxing in the garden. Tony, an accomplished gardener himself, passes on many practical tips and clever suggestions which he gleaned from Geoff over their years of gardening together. And he reveals something of the relationship between himself and Geoff - perhaps the best-loved gardener ever - from lives lived closely together: sometimes funny, sometimes sad and sometimes intensely irritating as this stubborn friend worked his way through his remarkable life.
